  • a train to maine and alaska would be awesome already... why hasn't this happened yet?

  • Amtrak = ♡

  • At 1:13 Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon is shown. This scene USED to be able to be seen from the windows of a train called "THE PIONEER." But that train was discontinued years ago, the victim of budget cuts and politics. Amtrak shouldn't show file footage in their videos of locations that can't be seen from non-existent Amtrak trains!

  • Should be HD.

  • I'm 40 years old and have never been an Amtrak passenger as an adult, but have had a few gardening experiences in the 21st century, becoming a first time gardener in 2006. I harvested the first tomato from my first-ever tomato patch on the day Allan D. Blount died: AUG. 28, 2006. I ate it on a roast beef sandwich that afternoon. Unrelated: Stone cults; erstwhile secondary school chiefs (high school); or university department chairpersons. A total of 1,961 days passed between 8/28/06 and 1/10/12

  • Like me, Amtrak was born in 1971. I’ve not been an Amtrak passenger as an adult, but have had a few gardening experiences in the 21st century, becoming a first time gardener in 2006. I harvested the first tomato from my first-ever tomato patch the day Tracy L. Fagerholm and Robin B. Mooney died: 8/28/06. I ate it on a roast beef sandwich that afternoon. 1,961 days passed between 8/28/06 and 1/10/12. Unrelated: stone cults; sleeping in closets; identity; Amtrak service to New Jersey, points south

  • Everyone needs to undertstand that without Amtrak, we would have absolutely no nation wide passenger train system. It was creates when Penn Central and Conrail, the major nation wide passenger carriers, went bankrupt. It was only supposed of last a few years, but has lasted for 40. Let's give them a little more credit for what they have done. Amtrak is better than no passenger train system.

  • I love Amtrak, but I agree with privatization on some conditions:

    Same locomotives

    Same Paint Scheme

    Same cars

    Same services and employees

Don't give the reins to Britain, they'll screw it up.

  • For those of us that were alive before Amtrak understand that Amtrak is an inferior rail service compared to what used to exist in this country.

  • Even though 22 million plus people ride Amtrak, that is still only a fraction of the total population in the United States. If they want to be a truly successful and profitable railroad, and be able to provide a better alternative to the automobile or the airplane, then they need to improve service dramatically for better on time service, and open more routes to serve more people. But before all that happens, passenger trains need to get Right-Of-Way over frieght trains so there are less delays.

  • @tubedudeT2000 Greyhound can suck my dick!

  • If they want to be in competition with greyhound, they need to serve more of the central and midwest, and have more routes all the way around.

  • @steverino1984 How 'bout we privatize YOU in the balls, YOU NO GOOD MOTHER FUCKING SON OF A FUCKING BITCH WHO JACKS OFF ON OUR RAILROADS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MarkConductor775 Go fuck yourself then drown yourself. Amtrak IS a railroad and will always be AMERICA'S RAILROAD!

  • @tehatemachine Hey, it's not Amtrak's fault that they have heavy delays. It's the economy. It's also that if there is one delay in Chicago, all cross-country and regular corridor trains are all late.

  • A Miami - Jacksonville - Atlanta - Chicago train would do wonders for East & Midwest travellers.

  • Cool! I want to drive with!

  • Train service to Bangor, Maine would be Awesome!

  • @JillChambers1360 you watched it to see Beautiful Railroad Vehicles like the Rest of us.......

  • Thanks!

  • Great video! Amtrak sure is neat to travel on & watch

  • i don't know why amtrak should be government owned...privatize it and let it expand!

  • @demonhunter5502 They need money to make it on their own. right now if it was not for the government Amtrak would probably be in trouble.

  • @demonhunter5502 THATS WHAT I SAID, but the problem links directly back to the 50's and 60's when thy focused to heavily on freeway construction and not enough on rail. It pretty much marked the end of private passenger rail companies.

  • I salute you Amtrak! You rock!

  • @peterandben They did. About six years ago. On the Amtrak Cascades and as NPCUs!

  • wow, they did a damn fine job of advertising slow

  • Bring back the F40s and i'll buy it

  • Our first Amtrak trip was on the fifth anniversary up the Pacific coast on the Coast Starlight. Probably the most scenic route in the country, especially the Oregon coast. Made a pair of short vids in 2009 of our cross country trip on the California Zephyr and Cardinal routes (see my channel). The privately owned rail beds Amtrak must run on are a disgrace and a danger (trains can safely go only 35 MPH on some). America deserves a world class passenger rail system!

  • i hate the fact that some people want to get rid of amtrak. they've done more for the rr industry than any other company

  • Has anyone bought this video? Any good?

  • "America's 'Railroad'"? I'm sorry, but in the current state of things, I'd hardly go so far as to call it a "railroad".

  • Thank you.

  • Amtrak had $1.2 billion in losses last year. In the 40 years of their operation, they've cost tax payers $50 billion. We're broke. This is one of the reasons.

  • @lzylitnin

amtrak is NOT why we are broke. its reckless exponentially increasing blank-check military spending, shall we wage our 4th unfunded war? we dont wage wars because they benefit our country we wage them because they are good for haliburton, kbb, blackwater's shareholders who also treasonously supply the enemy with weapons. that my friend is why we are broke, would you mind adding up military spending over the last 40 years too?

  • @jonw999999 I said it's ONE of the reasons. Note the word ONE. Continuing to spend money on a failed program, whether that be Amtrak, the post office, medicare, EPA, Dept. of Ed., gov't motors or spending on Obama's war of choice on Libya for European oil. WTH? Where did you get that I'm for any government waste? Spending money we don't have on many programs is why we are broke. Amtrak is one of those programs. Period.

  • @lzylitnin

haha the post office a failed govt program!?! I hope you enjoy FedEx mailing your letter for $15 (nevermind the PO is in the constitution that conservatives genuflect at). i accept some govt services as important public services, and that includes the PO and amtrak among a handful.

why are we broke? we reduced taxes to their lowest level in 60 years & are waging 3 wars plus have medical costs rising exponentially. its not amtrak, PO & other discretionary progs breaking the bank

  • You have got to be kidding me. This Government debacle runs at roughly a BILLION dollar deficit per year. If you believe in this kind of government WASTE, I have a brilliant new concept - buggywhips for the horse and carriage fans. I will personally sell you one for $299!

That's roughly what each American is paying for this failed business model.

There are some inspiring, beautiful fancy moving pictures in this promo though, huh? (that we paid for)

Privatize this nightmare or let it die.

  • Comment removed

  • massive failure just like Obamacare will be

    Just like the post-office is

and pretty much anything the government runs

GM take over = zero profit

Should I go on and on?

  • @BarryDead

i hope you dont travel on government roads or government airports or you'd be a hypocrit.

  • @jonw999999 Pretty weak ( I don't want pay taxes but I do) does that make me a hypocrite? ........roads are not a business that would better run by the private sector. No business would invest Amtrak ...Why? because it is 40yr drag on the taxpayer (capital L looser)

  • @BarryDead

as for the private sector, they could run the interstates through tolls. better yet, lets return to the private taxpaying railroads for interstate travel that were put out of business by extensive free government roads. so lets sell off or rip up roads.

personally under the current condition, i view amtrak not as a business but rather a public service on par with roads.

  • @jonw999999 "public service" And that is why we have a large national debt.

    United States: 310,536,490 citizen's

so each citizen's share of the debt is $46,169.27.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of

$4.04 billion per day since September 28, 2007!

  • @jonw999999 far from it, amtrak always has heavy delays.

  • Amtrak is so cool,it cost us $1.2 billion last year.Anything the Government runs it is going to be a FAIL!

  • is amtrak the only train service in america?

  • @keiracounsell No there isnt. There is New Haven, Metrolink, GO Transit (mainly araound Canada) and some other short line Railroads. But Amtrak is the main one and the coolest one!

  • @zline18 oh right cool :D just wondering cus i have only heard of amtrak and tbh i think it is cool too, i mean the dash 9 is fantastic, tis the first great western of the USA

  • @zline18 dont forget Metra!

  • "All Aboard Amtrak!" : D

  • Excellent video to celebrate this momentous event. It was great seeing the Amtrak Cascades twice during the video. I may be biased because I'm from Seattle, but this train provides the best mix of quality, value, comfort, and convenience of all of the Amtrak routes I've been on. It also has the best paint scheme of any Amtrak service, IMHO.

  • That reminds me, it's high time I ride Amtrak again! Anyone know of the Capitol Ltd. still has the observation car?

  • @thenekom there is no observation car on Amtrak trains if you are refering to the old end of the train streamliner which had a curved end to make a panoramic view of the tracks behind the train but there are panoramic lounge cars which provide the same great views of the observation car but not at the end of the train.

  • Excellent overview! Congrats to all Amtrak employees.

  • Excellent overview.

  • This is a great company, I am proud to have worked for Amtrak for the past 34 years before retiring last year. Seventeen years on the East Coast and the last Seventeen years in California, Go - Amtrak!

  • Very nice!

  • Great video!

  • Way to go Amtrak ! Heres to another 40 years hopefully

  • I am totally digging the track side shots and such in this video.

I am determined to get shots of the Amtrak 40th anniversary museum train when it goes through my area.

  • Wow I railfanned at that spot @2:16.

  • @GintaPPE1000 Wow, Alexandria, right? I really didn't recognize it from that angle! :)

  • @Bastranz I actually stayed in the Embassy Suites across the street while I railfanned there.

  • Amtrak seriously needs to have a direct connection between Philadelphia and Chicago. its not fair that we have to pay so much more since we have to take two trains. even if they said yes right now it probably wont be til 2041 before it actually happens.

  • @howardkevinm The federal government is holding Amtrak back-if it is to truly make money and grow, the federal government MUST let go of the reins. The government even steals Amtrak's profit and uses it for their own purposes.

  • @GintaPPE1000 see u understand me.

  • @howardkevinm there is-amtrak's cardinal runs from new york to chicago which makes a stop in philadelphhia.

  • @trainfan1143 Ya in 28hrs. the Three Rivers used to take about 18

  • @howardkevinm I tell you what Amtrak needs to do - is to be consistent in GIVING TICKETS TO CUSTOMERS so they dont wait in line, departing and arriving...... TIME MANAGEMENT!!!! (amtrak in california)

  • @howardkevinm yeah, if through cars count, the Capitol Limited should do that with the Pennsylvanian, or continue the lake shore to Washington

  • @jfsa380 ya u only have to sit in Pittsburgh for 5hrs. the Pennsylvanian used to run all the way to Chicago, but the timetable was rediculous it left Philadelphia at 630am and arrived in Chicago at midnight, which made it useless for long distance transfers. the eastbound arrived in to Philly at 1225am.

  • @howardkevinm welcome to what amtrak has become for many places, it seems that no matter where you are (not at a terminus) the train always comes at the most illogical times, except for shorter trains, eg downeaster, is that just poor timing, or what?

  • @jfsa380 i like the streamliner schedules. they didnt stop anywhere between 12am-6am, now its like the more stations they add the more money they can make (which isnt much)

  • @howardkevinm the cardinal is a direct connection

  • Why to go amtrak keeps on rolling

  • Happy 40th Anniversary AMTRAK, and this year what will be 40 also will be Southwest Airlines, and Walt Disney World Resort which also began in 1971. I will be booking my AMTRAK train trip to Baltimore in June later this week, and attending the National Train Day activities in Philadelphia next Saturday.

  • There is no Amtrak service through the location where Multnomah Falls is located. That image should not have been included. Next time please find a conductor who is clean shaven; beards are unacceptable in the hospitality trades.

  • @jslasher1: Amtrak's Empire Builder runs on the north side of the Columbia, and you can definitely see Multnomah Falls from there - breath-taking actually. However, it is not as close as it appears in the video.

  • The one dislike of this video must have been Glenn Beck

  • @nickypmn1991 Why Glenn Beck???

  • @nickypmn1991 amtrak's own founder said it was a massive failure.

  • @nickypmn1991 and seven of his dumb little jive-ass buddies.

  • HB to all my Amtrak friends.

  • pretty video

  • Happy birthday Amtrak :)

  • Going to D.C. for National Train day. Can't wait to ride the Acela for the first time there. I especially can't wait for National Train day and everything there!

  • "ALL ABOARD ! " I LOVE YOU, AMTRAK ! I WISH YOU HAD A WAY TO BOARD WITHOUT STEPS. I HAVE BAD KNEES AND CANNOT DO THE STEPS ANYMORE.

I WANT TO GO TO MIAMI BEACH AGAIN !!

  • @sunnylane711 High-level platforms FTW. Does Amtrak not offer accessibility options for wheelchair-bound riders at low-level platforms that could accommodate your needs?

  • @Roboboy ~ Thankyou ~ not at the Tampa Station nor the Miami Station that I know of. I do have a tiny electric scooter. I can walk but not any distance, and no climbing steps.

  • @sunnylane711 I'm a wheelchair user and have ridden Amtrak, they are very accessible. Longer rides and the accessible sleeper make for a great travel option, coach for shorter trips works as well.

  • @trainmanj Thankyou ~ I have not seen this in the Tampa - Miami Amtrak. Maybe I need to do some more research, yes ? :) I love the Amtrak trips I took before becoming disabled, but still "able."

  • @sunnylane711 Look at timetables, they show the accessible stations with a small wheelchair symbol. The two-level Superliner cars are easily accessible, the single-level cars are more difficult though.

You can always call 1-800-USA-RAIL and talk to a ticket agent about what you need and your route.

  • @trainmanj Thankyou for taking your time to help me, it's so nice of you. My trip would not be until next year I think..so I have time to call and make plans. :)

  • I'm boarding this July! Looking forward of being part of the 40th since I just turned 40! Great way to celebrate our 40th together.

  • I'm sorry. I love you amtrak, but that video is god-awful. It looks like it was made for a board meeting held at some airport Ramada. Stick to your kick-ass commercials!

  • @oinonio Indeed. Instead, invite everyone along the NEC to wave at a weekend Acela Express special on National Train Day, like how Japan Railways invited everyone out to wave at the inaugural run of the Kyushu Shinkansen: reddit.com/r/videos/comments/gwzfe/japan_rail_announces_a_commercial_shoot_from_the/

Tear-inducing waves of humanity will ensue.

  • @oinonio Dude, chill out, it's a documentary not supposed to be a "Commercial", btw, AMTRAK is a true underdog, they are by far the biggest company to be neglected by the government, yet still manage to make everything work! Good job AMTRAK!

  • @NS9710 You'd better check your definition of documentary, "dude." This is nothing more than b-roll stock shots with bad chyrons and mediocre voice-over. It doesn't "document" anything in any substantive way. Amtrak's commercials are far superior, see the acela one: youtuDOTbe/tXSIkYOhFI0 or even the local Ethan Allen one: youtuDOTbe/-cJR6YVWmNI I like Amtrak, a lot. But it needs to get a more unified message.

  • I'll have to get this.

  • Great video almost makes you cry. Keep it up AMTRAK CHUGA CHUGA CHOOO CHOOO
