I 'used to think I knew a little about music' until I ran across a CD at Library, Beach Boys Songs Selected by Brian Wilson. I played it over and over but especially 'Til I die' , Caroline No, Warmth Of The Sun, then you have to go back and revisit these songs you think you knew, Brian Wilson is a Savant Genius!
Once again, Brian welds the spiritual with the romantic. He weaves them together to bring the listener into a trance. It does it to me every time. He was a local treasure from Hawthorne, Ca., just down the street from me. Sometimes you just don't know where the next world class genious may come from. He or she just might be living right next door.
Pretty much time i got into beach boys was watching this terrific documentary by Don Was on Brian Wilson called "I just wasn't made for these times" Wilson talked about the song and about the worry that the Devil would take his soul and how vulnerable he felt at the time Very profound stuff.
I love this song so much. This and Surfs Up have to be my favourite songs of all time. You can really sense what Brian was going through at the time. I think his last truloy great tune, (not to say he hasn't done great songs after this).
oh my God! You are so right! It is this song and Surf's Up for me as well. This definately penetrates deep within like a warm blanket around your soul. Brian created the most beautiful song about such a humble awareness. I could just die listening to it.
A classic! I love this song and its harmonies, starts out soft then builds up to a creschendo of emotion; "these things I'll be untill I die"-wow! check out the instrumental version it will trully blow your mind!-off the Endless Harmony cd track 21.
i always thought that this track will be perfect with some vocals solos/ harmonies (you know - in typical beach boys style) at the end of the song last about minute. Like a symbol of crying and dying. Anyway it's still flawless
Only a person without an ego, and pure of soul and spirit, could have written and expressed this. Brian is that person. And there are very few in the world, in the history of the world, who fit that description. Van Gogh was another.
im not so sure van gogh was a pure a spirit as Brian Wilson, I mean Van Gogh drank Absinthe, chased prostitutes around and cut his ear off when one rejected him. Brian Wilson seemed to keep his inner child and still seems to have it. i love Van Gogh but Brian Wilson is the best... depending on who u read van gogh either sold one or zero paintings in his lifetime. Brian was a star by the time he was in his 20s. He is more of a Leonardo da Vinci, or a Michelangelo than a Van Gogh :) :) :) :)
The unbearable bleakness of the lyric is miraculously transformed by the sublime melody such that the resulting whole is irresistible and transporting. This must have come to Brian Wilson as the resolution of an unimaginable time of suffering, and it's incredible that he was able to grasp it and offer it to the world.
Thank you photo2010 and thank you Brian Wilson for squeezing out all this art and for sharing your softness, wisdom, vision, innocence, and music with us!
Great new folks! The 2007 CD "Warmth of the Sun' has 28 great cuts INCLUDING! Surfs up, Feel Flows, Sail on Sailor, 'Til I die, All this is that and many many more! I never thought that I would find all of Brians best songs on ONE cd! Just FYI. Rock on!
