Actually she currently has the largest piano repertoire in the world. For instance, she has recorded Chopin's, Brahms' and Rachmaninov's complete piano pieces (respectively 15, 12 and 10 CD's), Boulez's 3 piano sonatas, Beethoven's 5 piano concertos, Ligeti's complete etudes, and many other pieces. If I'm not wrong, she's currently recording Beethoven's complete piano sonatas.
@demosj I don't agree. Personally, I think virtuoso quality is not about senselessly going for maximum speed but much more about mastering the fine points of sound and timing. And Biret has, also in this piece, some very rewarding insights to offer on these points (a good many of highly interesting insights, actually!). And these would more than compensate for all the wrong notes and technical shortcomings – if the latter were of any interest at all.
@Herxal I agree with that to some extent. There are points of expressiveness and beauty in Biret's playing, but if you master the fine points of sound and timing, why not master the notes? It's not fair to pianists like Ivo Pogorelich or Cziffra who not only crafted insightful, interesting interpretations, but were also technically on top of the piece in addition to offering great musicianship.
@demosj I perfectly agree that this is by no means "her" piece. But I don't think any serious pianist should (or could) fill his programmes exclusively with his "innate" repertoire, not taking any challenges apart from that. And if she rose so magnificently to the task, offered so many valuable moments, and if (probably) somebody made a recording without her knowing and put it on YouTube ... Would she really be the one to blame?
@Herxal "wrong notes and technical shortcomings" are of little interest to me...it's usually the correct notes and technical mastery that are usually more interesting at a minimum.
The great Vladimir Ashkenazy, who is only 5'5" tall has very small hands and he has recorded "everything in the world!" Granted, Biret is great but she is no match for Ashkenazy either in speed or grace. My humble opinion.
I think u need to reconsider your judgement. Idil biret is a very special pianist, the fact that she is not a media balloon like others does not mean that she is no match. On the contrary, her playing is actually above many 'great' pianists. This piece is not a good representative, but don't forget many pianists can not be at home with every piece...i don't see anyone who can match her in the symphony transcriptions...
This is not good at all, very boring and totaly wrong repetory for wonderful Mrs Biret. She is a great chopin and rachmaninov performer, but she should stay there. When it comes to this piece, Claudio Arrau makes an amazing performance 1928!!! The best ever!!!

I have several CDs of her, playing Chopin's concertos and krakoviak, Brahms variations (Handel, Paganini, Schumann). Search the Naxos label. You will find them.
Yes, she was a pupil of Cortot. I like the dry sound she produces in many parts. This is a toccata after all, and she conveyed that very well. Interesting ideas and excellent interpretation of the piece for sure.
Such a bullshit and embarassingly bad pianist. Never understood her success! She tried to play Islamey? She should practices a few gammes first!!!

Not virtuosic enough. I don't see the point in attempting to play this piece without conquering it technically.
