Never heard this before, though I'm aware of its existence. I grew up in Tucson; about 75 miles north, at an I-10 rest stop I visited frequently, is the only memorial to Hayes I'm aware of -- just a tiny plaque to note his birthplace. It was one of my first exposures to history. I'm grateful to you for this rendition.
I'm sure you'd know it if you were a fan of Johnny Cash. That's where most people have heard it. Thanks for your comment. Made me realise I hadn't replied to any of the comments here!
You've done a splendid rendition of this ode to Ira Hayes...a story song that never fails to give me chills. Thanks for perfoming it in a pure and unadulterated manner,as usual. I only wish there were more songs such as this written for today. The poignant and relevant message in this song is priceless, indeed. I am forever grateful to you for performing it here... passing it on to the next generation.
Kiki Friedman's version is good

Very well sung. Been a fan of Peters since the 60s, a few sing it, including Cash (a great version) but none come near the original

True. It's a pity we don't hear more of his music.

excellent rendition of this song. Johnny Cash introduced me to it. I hope to get a Peter LaFarge album someday.

Great song Raymond. The film 'Flags of our Fathers' is excellent and a must for anyone interested in 'Ira Hayes'
