Shut up you moron you have no idea what you are talking about, you are worthless and if cthulhu was real, he wouldn't be a fucking squid which is an organism that was created through evolution.
You are entire life has been a delusion, you fail.
I always assumed that the humor in these kinds of jokes was based directly on the conflict between Cthulhu as timeless cosmic horror and Cthulhu as petty sea monster.
I liken the horror inflicted by Cthulhu as to the horror that a vacum cleaner inflicts on a dog. The vacum isn't going after the dog; its got its own thing going on, but the mere existence or presence of a vacum drives a dog out of its mind. In its closet dead vacum waits dreaming, and the dogs around it and they have terrible nightmares about it.
The characteristics of Cthulhu in pop culture are closer to Nyarlathotep's characteristics; but the meme probably comes from the RPG Call of Cthulhu.
The reason why Cthulhu has become equated to traditional movie monsters is because you can't reduce existentialism to a t-shirt slogan.
I never really gave a shit about Lovecraft. He always struck me as self-important. But instead of making his self-loathing internal, he projected it onto everyone else with his writing.
I would say that a lot of the Cthulhu jokes and memes were created by Lovecraft fans who had read it and understood it. Because seriously, it's a scary concept. The idea that man is meaningless in a cosmic concept, and the universe really wasn't made for us. Of course, we are going to try to reduce it to a joke, and make plush Cthulhu dolls. The subject matter is so horrifying that, of course, people are going to reduce it to something they can comprehend and control. Sad, but inevitable.
@BillionSix Personally, my love for Cthulhu grew from how utterly spine-chilling the idea is. Our existance is absolutely meaningless in the grand scheme of themes, which kstraub even says here is a major theme for Lovecraft. I am a huge fan of his work for the sheer depth of what it is that he is saying; it's so muchmore than your typical horror story. I've found Lovecraft to be very thought-provoking. Of course someone's going to joke about it, and I'll laugh, but I'm not belittling his ideas.
Thank you!!! Someone had to say it.

Man is a sleeping god, generally experiencing nightmares. When the time is right he wakes up.

Same thing with Satan or Jesus or Dracula. It started out cool, caught people's imaginations, and turned into a silly cartoonish bit of nonsense.
Nice vid. I agree, read the man's stories! Lovecraft knew...
The Cult of Cthulhu is completely on board with the worthlessness of ordinary humanity. Check out the website.

You should make this into an animation.

To be fair, it probably would do all that-- it just wouldn't realize it.
It would be great to be president and not realize it.

I love Cthulhu and I HAVE read Lovecraft. I view Cthulhu as the "main" Old One because he is the most popular.

What we don't see in this video is Scott Kurtz tied up and sedated in the trunk as Kris is driving off a pier.

@sojirokaidoh2 I agree completely. But, it's also true that a good way to deal with fear is by turning it into a joke.
