Team 7 was a Jonin Sensei watching over three apprentice Ninja, Team Kakshi was a real ninja squad with Kakashi as leader. Sai joined at that point, so he is not apart of team 7.

Not exactly. Watch the first 4 episodes of shippuden, they're in english now. When Naruto returns, the reorganize the team as team kakashi, thereby marking the end of team 7. The difference? Team 7 was 3 apprentice ninja under the instruction, guidance and protection of a Jonin (kakashi). Team Kakashi was 3 equal ninja with Kakashi as leader, not as sensei (although they still call him that as it is proper japenese etiquette.)
