  • Nice work!

  • I am a fan of Mr. Jonathan Kozol. I am not a fan of interllectural posts that are dishonest. His lecture, however, has nothing to do with his Jewish's faith. It's disingenious to say "White" children of limited financial resource is not given an advantage over other minority in certain areas. News media gave examples of this.

America is at her worse. Negative and dishonest posts are one example why. All citizens must propels up and out if America is to florish

  • Though i agree with Mr. Kozol on the schooling system aspect, I wonder how he feels about his relgion -Jewish, and how orthodox Jews don't assimilate with other races or intermarry with non jews- this is jewish orthodox belief folks -not mine.... I would love to hear his opinions on assimilation and intermarriage of the jewish religion with "gentiles" and people of color ...

  • @MrGrevy If there is anyone in denial here, it is you. Quite odd it is that the troll (i.e. you) does not recognize itself. The notion that a researcher is a do-nothing shows how inane you really are and also highlights your lack of sociological understanding. If anyone is without an excuse, it is you. Please stop spewing twisted logic on the floor, as you are unequipped with the intelligence to understand reality.

  • @xmikeyxlikesitx You're not making any points. Calling me a troll (what are you, five?) is not an argument, and it does not make it true. Your narcissism is profound, by the way and I pray for your family and friends. It must be hell putting up with such an acidic, self involved twit. Disgraceful human being.

  • Attention was brought to East St. Louis, dew to this book. Most college use this book as part of their curriculum. Now it is nation wide. Beverly Hills is under the same district as the inner city of Los Angeles, More of the tax dollars go to the Beverly Hills schools to produce more Business owners and school under funded in the inner city, to produce cheap labor. Teachers are over burden all over the country in the inner cities, different time same seedy game.

  • My solution is lets forget intregration and focus on the "resources to the people approach"; wherein black communities can be self suffifencet, self serving and rubust away from Whites. Stop badgering white folk just let them be!

  • I dont care what your mindset or Mood is. If you cant find something in your heart of truth in what this guy is stating, you belong to the devil.

  • @1bruiserboy Wow that's a real intelligent statement. Go away troll.

  • Jonathan Kozol is deeply involved with the subject of equity and diversity for all children. He doesn't have to do what he does, he is obviously a well educated man who could have probably chosen any career path. He chose to be an advocate for those who do not have enough power or prestige to make themselves heard. I commend him. Also, this is the year 2010 nothing should be based on race anymore. We need to strive towards social equality, remember we are all created equal.

  • @kiraishere100 You say that without a hint of irony. Amazing. He is not an advocate, he's a do-nothing blowhard who is in it for self aggrandizement. He offers no solutions and is utterly obsessed with race. How can you possibly say nothing should be based on race and support this moron.

  • @theannapolisman-

really? the JP Morgan Chase Bank does not agree with you and they are making reparations to the descendants of slaves-acknowledging that they profited from slavery, to sum it up, this desparity in the school systems is the result of a system which privileged Whites to inherit property and blacks to inherit choices?-you are apparently white and privileged and do not understand the economics that put blacks behinds for centuries.

  • @auradiana Hahaha blacks have no excuse anymore. They are free to do what they want. Please provide specific, verfiable examples of current institutionalized racism against blacks. (Hint: there aren't any).

  • @auradiana So JP Morgan Chase is infallible? That doe not make me wrong - it only means they are ass-kissing to the PC crowd. The idea of white privelege is a myth, that only serves to help black people justify their miserable existence and failures. You are delusional my friend. All the money in the world will not save black schools. The culture there is doomed. You know the whole "successful=acting white" garbage? The obsession with rap and sports?

  • in what way is kozol being racist? i think that he tries to explain and convey that a lot of the public schools have apparent shortcomings. my belief is that he articulates the way in which students are being conditioned and taught to act in most instances a subservient way. the segregation kozol speaks about is meant to meet the goal of the society's dictates to have one class of people ruled by another class. he does expound on the deficiencies of city schools. TRUE.

  • im not sure why your saying that kozol is a racist. he is arguing that inner city schools are grossly underfunded in comparison to their suburban counterparts. that is the main premise of his thesis. this talk in particular does delve into the issue a lack of hygiene on school grounds which im gathering keeps a student body unmotivated. and that segregation in schools still exist is his other main argument. idk just how integrated a society we are today say vs. a generation ago.

  • @ryongchoi His "underfunded" argument is absolute nonsense. Though inner-city schools WOULD be "underfunded" compared to more affluent suburban school districts, if local property tax revenue was the only money received. However, these ostensibly "underfunded" schools receive state and federal revenue and non-profit/corporate donations/grants, such that per-pupil expenditures in these inner-city schools is HIGHER than that in their "rich" suburban counterparts. Not-so-coincidentally...

  • @TavaresDelanis ...these inner-city schools grossly under-perform their suburban counterparts academically. Liberals will counter-argue that this is because of lower FAMILY incomes for students attending the former. Fine, but it is fallacious to equate government spending on the schools, allocated to administrators instead of the students and their parents, with family income and/or wealth. Bureaucratic displacement...

  • @ryongchoi Segregation does NOT exist in schools, that is simply absurd. The only thing holding black kids back is their refusal to work hard and learn. Their culture does not value hard work or success. That's a fact.

  • @MrGrevy neither does your culture and yes segregation does exist in the schools

  • @sweetnurnot10 Really? Please refer me to an all white school that does not allow blacks. Hint: you can't. Goofy moron.

  • @MrGrevy These schools were set up in a way to refrain blacks from attending moron, so you only have one or two blacks in a school of mostly whites.

  • @sweetnurnot10 Explain how this is the case. How can you prove they were set up to prevent blacks from attending? And what about schools that are almost all black?

  • What a lovely human being! Thank you Mr. Kozol for all of your compassionate insights.

  • Thomas Sowell, author of "Inside American Education: The Decline, The Deception, The Dogmas," is arguably one of the best thinkers in America. I challenge everyone who listens to this Kozol presentation to also see on youtube "THOMAS SOWELL - rotten PUBLIC SCHOOLS."

  • Kozol discusses seeing very few white faces among the African American and immigrant populations in many schools; he seems to hold only conservatives culpable for this segregation. Why aren't the children of the white liberals at these schools? Granted, there are few white faces, but that paucity is not only because there are few children of white conservatives at those schools--there are few children of white liberals either. Liberals liberally populate Kozol's "elegant white suburbs," too.

  • Blacks stay poor because of their culture. Not because of oppression. They are poor because of bad choices. Not because of white people

  • Those people were children once....

  • @theannapolisman If you read his books, he also discusses poor schools which are predominately white. Not all poor people are minorities. Go to a rural town in middle America.

  • @kiraishere100 Even poor white kids outperform poor black kids.

  • @MrGrevy how do you know that ????

  • @sweetnurnot10 Test scores, genius.

  • @MrGrevy The schools these children attend ardly prepare them for standardized test scores

  • @sweetnurnot10 Not always - and the negro schools try to do the same thing, genius.

  • Neville you moron,

There is nothing racist about being a conservative. Conservatives are into racial equality.

  • thank you so much for posting this - i've been reading this book for my education class and the things that he describes in his book are horrific and even worse that it occurs today.

  • what does his being jewish have to do with anything. kozol had a great book. already read it in a soci class.

  • Your comment is by a racist WASP -I didn't have to check. I did do so by the way, and I was right-you are a racist. Morons like you are becoming way too mainstream, always saying the same shit.

  • S.O.C.I.A.L.

J.U.S.T.I.C.E. = "Slogans Of Colleges Indeed Advance Liberalism. 'Justice' Unveiled Shows Taxes intruding Citizens' Earnings!"

  • Boy, right-wing morons like you can sure talk, but you sure can't think, can you? Where do you get these ridiculous acronyms from-your ass?

  • White children are bullied in the city schools and sane parents take them out. You, Kosol, can attack "apartheid" all you want, but you live in a liberal, ivory tower fantasy. To allow White children into inner city schools is tantamount to child abuse....

  • Did you even read Shame of the Nation? It's not about bullying, racist, it's about the fact that the white middle class children are given far more educational opportunities than working class white children and minorities. Bullies? My God, that's the laziest excuse I've ever heard.

  • R.u.d.e.D.a.n. = "'Rhetoric underlies disrespectful ettiquette Dan advances now"

Yes I read it. Yes I got the thesis you now state. You don't even know what race I am. You are prejudiced!!!!!

  • How am I prejudiced?

  • You called me a racist, Dan. You don't even know what race I am.

  • You don't have to be white to be a racist

  • I totally agree.

  • Awesome?

  • Nope, but it sure does help!

  • Don't bother trying to talk to right-wing sheeple like him, he has no brain, and just wants to be a racist bigot.

  • @RudeDan Actually, negroid kids are given more opportunities. Ever hear of affirmative action? Disgraceful.

  • @MrGrevy

I am aware of Affirmative Action. This doesn't solve funding discrimination that dooms mostly black and hispanic school districts to inadequate facilities and lessons. Meanwhile, only the top pupils in these classes receive aid. Poor white students can also receive aid. So no, blacks don't have more opportunities.

  • @RudeDan That is patently, demonstrably false. I see you are willing to lie to make a point. Disgraceful. Please provide evidence that poor whites get more aid than poor blacks.

  • @MrGrevy

I never claimed that poor whites get more aid than blacks.... They do also get aid though. As a poor half-white person, my scholarships has to do with my financial status, not the fact that I am half Puerto Rican.

So what do you want me to prove?

Also, could you show a little respect for someone you don't know.

  • Our schools are segregated because our neighborhoods are segregated. Open your eyes.

  • I see this in my own neighborhood. Miami-Dade County, Florida.

  • @Acronym77 There are bullies in every school not just inner city schools what a lame excuse

  • @sweetnurnot10 The problem I have with the talk about bullies is that it was not an issue until whites started killing themselves and shooting up a school! Blacks like myself had to learn to fight and had their lives changed because of bullying. Of course it is typical of america, but still sickening.

  • Yup had to watch this for my foundations class. I am sad because I feel like I was a kid in the middle. I did not go to extremely poor school but at the same token we were not a rich school either.

  • GREAT SPEECH!!!
