haha ! this is the worst representation of this song !!! the original name of the song is "Hora martisorului"; you should look at the representations of Ion Voicu or Nicolae Botgros and you'll see de difference !
It is too slow. This is gypsy music and it's supposed to fly like the wind. There is actually a video of the composer (Grigoras Dinicu) playing this on youtube. Go listen to it and you'll see how fast it's supposed to be. I love you Hillary but this is too slow.
man i grow up with this song and my parents also and my grandparents...and this is shit. Search for Ion Voicu - Hora Martisorului and you'll see a representation from 1950. Nothing new under the sun. Old is better ! Stealing is bad !
He correctly emphazised the important point of every phrase, just like she would do in Bach.
But sorry, this is gipsy music and should be unpredictible, sometimes out of time and sometimes it could (not neccessary) be a little bit out of tune, but this is just calculated. We must be honest and say that Heifetz's version was calculated, too but with more style, I mean he had that background of eastern Europe music, she doesn't.
That's why this interpretation is not that attractive to me.
I disagree. I can say my opinion without even been a musician. There not that many people out there who can play as Hilary. What we all have to shut up?
Yeah! It's true. She has such an amazing staccato it doesn't even sound like she is playing staccato (scratcy like pretty much all other recordings). Dude, did you see her down bow staccato?! Menuhin had the same kind of silky staccato in this piece.
This is slow, but one mistake can be forgiven... she is near-perfect in just about everything else. Besides, maybe that's how it sounded good to her, it's her version, and you can tell she finds and puts something in every note, it sounds like nothing is there by chance. In my opinion, she's the greatest violinist of our time!
This isn't actually a mistake, mossibaba. This piece is actually harder to play slowly, in particular the staccato. You can fake the staccato if you play it quickly.
I never said anything about articulation or difficulty. I just said she's ridiculously boring. There other much better and more fun performances of this peice on youtube.
The diffculty about this piece is staccato. The slower you play it, the harder it becomes to fit all the notes in one bow like she does(with a superior tone than the other performers) That is why here performance is superior to the others.
As far as Nicu Anghel is concerned, he's a sax player and he doesn't have to worry about running out of bow.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Never mind what instrument it is.Nothing hard if you play with special articulation(or how it is calling on violin). With Nicu plays Virgil Muzur unison on violin.
if the composer was gipsy doesn,t means he composed ...gipsy music . Not this time :). This music got a romanian folklore inspiration. See also HORA MARTISORULUI. Dinicu prefered to gain mony in western,s Europe restaurants and cafe,s . Hi didn,t get concerts ..as I know.
Watch THE BEST sax player ever from Romania-Nicu Anghel plays Hora Staccato and Hora Martisorului as colaj with Virgil Muzur on violin in about 95'.This are the originals and the masters and what is importent-not boring.
Hora Stacatto composed in 1906 by Grigoras (read: Grigorash) Dinicu, romanian violonist and composer(gipsy ethnicity if does matter!) He also composed Hora Martisorului , Caruta Postei and others . Jascha Heifez said about him : the best violonist I ever heared ...
Though the spirit of this interpretation is very gypsy and controlled at the same time, one cannot expect to be able to compare this video with any other, due to the excessive reverb of the hall, and the low quality of the recording equipment. I hope people don't hold on to the notion that violinists of great stature can be compared. Each is playing for a diferent audience (not us).
I´ll tell you some anekdote:one evening at Carnegie Hall,Heifetz waits in artistic room before scene, and Gingold like by hasard comes to his door and begins to play the more difficult exepts from violin repertoire.after some 10 min the door opens, and Heifetz says:"Jo,forget it".)
oj-oj,someone here don´t like Heifetz?don´t warry,Heifetz was better.if you don´t hear, why,i can´t tell you.OMG,i klicked just now on the link there...please,don´t compare this with Heifetz:)

That's a little comment for all of you fuck heads, who dear to criticize Heifetz. Can you just see how many KINDS of staccato, and how many COLORS can be seen and heard in his rendition?
If everybody seems to be better, funny, why all of you compare them to Heifetz? Conclusion:Fuck off!
She's a fantastic violinist and plays this beautifully. As great as her staccato is I still think Heifetz' had more bite. My all-time favorite interpretation of this piece however is by Michael Rabin.
Not even Heifetz's downbow staccato sounds that good! Hers sounds just like her upbows. I think this is the best version of this I have ever heard. Really fantastic and a truly amazing musician and person...
There's no ricochet used in this piece! It's all up and down bow staccato. She's using Heifetz' bowings for the staccato's. Reference Heifetz' video somewhere on this site. I have to commend her on excellent playing. Too many people cheat and play alternate the staccato. Greay job Hilary, it was awesome!
This video firstly wasn't shot in the optimal condition, secondly, has gone through format conversion to fit on Youtube (it's only 1/10 the original file size now). A lot of sound details are lost. I just want to give out this fact here.

Hey, Alejandro, just 'cause you can't pick up on her expression doesn't mean it's not there. What are you expecting her to do, exactly? This is a simple encore piece, not the Elgar concerto. You might not like her interpretation, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have one.
you aren't listening closely. there's plenty of depth and color. listen to it again and again, if you still can't hear it, comment be back, i'll spell it out for you with times and everything.
Egonsky, have you watched any of her other videos or listened to her CDs? I've seen her live several times, and she has 10x the control of anybody. She can do whatever she wants on the violin. If she can't do those staccatos faster, then I guarantee nobody can. She's not going to cheat them, though, and try and do them fast if it can't be done well. Leave that to everybody else.
one thing i particularly like about this performance: she doesn't rush the end of the phrase because she's losing control of the bow, because her bow control is obviously fantastic. great performance.
