It is too slow. This is gypsy music and it's supposed to fly like the wind. There is actually a video of the composer (Grigoras Dinicu) playing this on youtube. Go listen to it and you'll see how fast it's supposed to be. I love you Hillary but this is too slow.

He correctly emphazised the important point of every phrase, just like she would do in Bach.

But sorry, this is gipsy music and should be unpredictible, sometimes out of time and sometimes it could (not neccessary) be a little bit out of tune, but this is just calculated. We must be honest and say that Heifetz's version was calculated, too but with more style, I mean he had that background of eastern Europe music, she doesn't.

That's why this interpretation is not that attractive to me.

Yeah! It's true. She has such an amazing staccato it doesn't even sound like she is playing staccato (scratcy like pretty much all other recordings). Dude, did you see her down bow staccato?! Menuhin had the same kind of silky staccato in this piece.

This is slow, but one mistake can be forgiven... she is near-perfect in just about everything else. Besides, maybe that's how it sounded good to her, it's her version, and you can tell she finds and puts something in every note, it sounds like nothing is there by chance. In my opinion, she's the greatest violinist of our time!

This isn't actually a mistake, mossibaba. This piece is actually harder to play slowly, in particular the staccato. You can fake the staccato if you play it quickly.

The diffculty about this piece is staccato. The slower you play it, the harder it becomes to fit all the notes in one bow like she does(with a superior tone than the other performers) That is why here performance is superior to the others.

As far as Nicu Anghel is concerned, he's a sax player and he doesn't have to worry about running out of bow.

Hora Stacatto composed in 1906 by Grigoras (read: Grigorash) Dinicu, romanian violonist and composer(gipsy ethnicity if does matter!) He also composed Hora Martisorului , Caruta Postei and others . Jascha Heifez said about him : the best violonist I ever heared ...

Though the spirit of this interpretation is very gypsy and controlled at the same time, one cannot expect to be able to compare this video with any other, due to the excessive reverb of the hall, and the low quality of the recording equipment. I hope people don't hold on to the notion that violinists of great stature can be compared. Each is playing for a diferent audience (not us).

There's no ricochet used in this piece! It's all up and down bow staccato. She's using Heifetz' bowings for the staccato's. Reference Heifetz' video somewhere on this site. I have to commend her on excellent playing. Too many people cheat and play alternate the staccato. Greay job Hilary, it was awesome!

Egonsky, have you watched any of her other videos or listened to her CDs? I've seen her live several times, and she has 10x the control of anybody. She can do whatever she wants on the violin. If she can't do those staccatos faster, then I guarantee nobody can. She's not going to cheat them, though, and try and do them fast if it can't be done well. Leave that to everybody else.
