@Moshgfx My grandfather is basically that man in that movie, he never took anything, even death seriously - or so it seemed, but deep down you knew he was trying to hide what he felt. It was a wall that we all looked at and knew was there, never said anything but we knew what was beyond that wall. <3 First time I watched that movie I cried due to how close of a person he was to the "Man of the Hour" in Big Fish - one of my favorite movies.
The men of the hour have always diligently been keeping the rest of us clamoring for more. The mark of all great artists,we're lucky that they're still alive to tell the tales and circulate their gift.Honored to still have them as a musical and lyrical compass.
@MrJ314 Its about recollecting a fathers memories and stories as a reflection toward his life before he dies. Giving a "final bow" before crossing over, and returning to meet his son when his time comes ("Goodbye for now").
I seen eddie vedder live at massy hall a few years back and before playing this song he was discussing his friendship with one of the ramones and how it was written just after his death. by the end of the song eddie was in tears, what a great show my favorite live perfomance i have had the pleasure experiencing. Eddie and the band play with such passion and emotion. Im my opinon the greatest band in the last 20 years !
@MSQUARETYLERJ sorry for your loss... we played this song at my grandpas funeral this summer too, best way to describe him, since after all, he was always the man of the hour... :-)
my grandad passed away a while ago, this song sepaks to me just for that reason. i play this on guitar and i alwasy feel him right there sitting beside me, like a hand on my shoulder.. I didnt see him before he died, never got to tell him how grateful i was for his being there for me, never got to thank him for his influence in my life..the last thing he said to me was, comin' down next sunday? I said for sure as long as you come to pick me up..ill be waiting until sunday for the rest of my life
check out just breathe, indifference, the end, pretty much all the songs of the "into the wild soundtrack" the song from "i am sam" and the song from "dead man walking" and i really really suggest a song called im still here which is pretty much a life story being told by eddie vedder. also present tense is a good one and inside job and come back. i think thats about it for PJ's and eddie's softer ones.
4 guys are too selfish to assume that they cried when they saw Big Fish. Since I saw the movie, I cry everytime I hear the song. I love you dad, even though you might not know it.
@rockaintpollution not everyone cries... different viewers .. they may not be guys .. but this film was intended for (father -sons) as it shows a great bond
This song, is like.. something that I can listen to, and see the peace in death.. as wierd as it may sound. It is just so beautiful, I'm only 14, but this song is just amazing. I wish more artist could make something like this. Pearl Jam is such an incredible band. Not that many songs in the world can pull so many emotions from people like this one.
@ZydostwoiLewica boring if your an asshole maybe... I know this generation has the attention span and artistic value of a fucking table cloth, but some of us can recognize a nicely written soft song.
this is the best song for our dads. come on people, we all'll miss them one day.. and probably we'll become one of them one day.. so show your feelings to them while you can. yeah I'm drunk but that's ok.
this is awesome song i love this song and i dont even like pearl jam this was played at my best friends funeral it was amazin i cant believe he is gone tho ....
Every time I hear this it's as though Gunnery Seargent Charles Johnson is still whispering to me to keep my temper cool and my powder dry. Three brutal wars in service of his country, yet still kinder and wiser than any person I've ever known. Saved a bullet riddled young man from the self destruction of rage. "Old men comprehend". I miss you immeasurably Gunny, good-bye for now. Thanks so much for posting this. He's not here now, but this song helps me find my balance when I need him.
Most beautiful song I know about losing a parent. I'm losing mine. I'm at that age when you have to expect it. And I suppose if the children last into middle age, then it was good. The whole thing done well enough. God, if you believe in him, was generous. But we're mortal.
I lost my Dad to brain cancer at the age of 68 almost 4 years ago. It is very difficult - I am sorry about what you are facing and will pray for you. I found comfort in this song, and would often listen to Five For Fighting's "Fifteen" and theme from Chicken Little, but the best is MercyMe's "Homesick." Knowing we will reunite with our loved ones in Paradise gives us hope!
Thank you, and I'm sorry for your loss. I'll search for Homsick and Fifteen. My mother's comfortable with the idea of passing. Much less comfortable with fighting her illness. The opposite of Man of the Hour's protagonist in every way. She's... um... happy. Says she enjoyed her life. She's been living in her bedroom for the past 15 or 20 years, although reatlively healthy. Has enjoyed it, even if others would not. Doesn't want to be miserable working toward staying alive for her last months.
I was wrong about the one song - The actual name of the Five For Fighting song is "100 Years" Sounds like your mother is at peace - that is a good place to be.
She's not religious and neither am I. She's not unhappy, and I feel neither should I be. I've listened to this song and cried a bit. That's all. She had it her way. And will have her passing her way. Had four children, all of whom... uh... can't say they love her well. She's not particuarly good at loving. She's not the worst.. Still... all on her terms, and that's what counts with her.
I was raised religious but then became a Christian in college. The difference? Religion is humanity's attempt to reach (be good enough) for God, while true Christianity is God's attempt to reach (redeem, save) humanity. Personally, I believe that where love and peace are, God is near.
I think there's some fallicy about non-believers, that we don't attempt to be good. We do. It's about doing your best in this life. Not that you'll be perfect, but that it's one life, here it is. Do your best. Think my mother is at peace. We're Jewish by ethnicity, and it's pretty similar to agnosticism or atheism in this respect. One life. You'll be imperfect. But strive to do your best. My mother enjoyed her life, and lived 76 years. Her kids have mixed feelings about her.
@seydawg I don't think she cares about her children's feelings. She wanted to live in her bedroom where she was queen of all she surveyed, and no one criticized it. That was a problem for me and... perhaps my siblings. I had a life she wasn't included in. Children she didn't know. But it wasn't a problem for her and... uh... fine. Glad she's content to see the spring.
i made a you tube account just to comment on this song. Everyone should listen to this song at least once, it makes you so thankful for the people you know and love =) i love Pearl Jam

Big Fish is simply a masterpiece - my absolute favorite Tim Burton film. The man put so much into it and gave us a beautiful work of art.
Thank you, Tim. And thank you Pearl Jam for making this song. :)

I didn't go to school today and when I started to feel better I watched this movie. I don't regret it, because I found out this great movie and song.
