Well like I said I am not doing them at all yet. Wont happen till I move back east. But I will probably be doing Southern Campaings. My friends and I are planning on doing a Loyalist Highlander impression, a regiment raised by a Jacobite officer exile who is seeking a pardon and a restoration in titles and lands. (This is based on documented fact.) Felt it was a little told story and how the Loyalist Highlanders would have rather been fighting the Brits but just wanted to go home.
This was done with my musket. It's a .75cal replica of the British brown bess. 39" barrel. Fires a .715" roundball. Projectile is 550grains. This was shot in South Africa. Shooting range is called SWAT, located in Centurion, Pretoria.
A well-tuned flintlock should fire instantaneously. Pull the trigger, get instant "BANG", as with modern firearms. Overpriming, damp powder, dull flints, etc., can also slow it down. If you are getting click-swish-boom, then you have a problem.
"Note the delay between the trigger pull and the actual shot."
The person who loaded that musket did a great job. For a flintlock, that is very little delay. Most people load too much prime in the pan, and it burns for a little while before firing the shot.
That delay of the trigger pull to the actual shot is because your shooting it on a foggy day. you have moist powder.

I live fired a friends musket just yesterday. A lot of people say it "kick's like a mule!" Nah, it only has a little kick to it.

Yeah more of a push than an actual kick wouldnt you say?

raise your elbow up a bit more and seat the muskets butt into your shoulder more. You'll be able to hold it steady easier.

The click-swish-boom is a lot more fun ... isn't that why we shoot them? If I wanted an instant bang like a modern gun, I'd shoot my 12 gauge.

Yes, he knew what he was doing. The shot I fired had a longer delay.

Nothing to add more than : I agree.
MagusEldred 3 years ago
dude elitearbor is exactly right, you really dont need that much prime for it to fire, just enough for it to travle from the hameer to the barrel.
