Actually I watched a documentary on Mary Kate & ashley they say they are fraternal because their doctor told them they were in separate sacs so they must be fraternal...they have never been dna tested.

My doctor told me the same thing...I had them dna tested when they were 5 and found out they were identical.... doctors used to beleive separate sacs meant they were fraternal...they know now that 1/3 of identical twins have a separate sac. so dont take a docs word for it if dna was not tested.

The Daughters of a friend of mine are fraternal twins and they are looking amazingly similar - but first: they are very young (8), second: they shared their hole life together.This is very important, only after adolescence & a few years of separation you will see the difference between monozycotic twins (try to differ as long as they are close) and fraternal ones.Third: the X-Factor, female Monozygotes differ more from each other than male ones.Thats just for the start.

Yes, They do look identical, but I have friends that look identical, but they arent. They just look very similar. It is just like a parent whose baby picture looks exactly like their child.

Great video--but as far as the Mary Kate and Ashley thing, I've heard a million times that they're fraternal, but I will NEVER believe it! I think that's just one of the things they tell people, wanting to have more of their own "identity", like the way they do their hair differently and dress differently.

You can see the difference between Mary Kate and Ashley if you look close. Mary Kate's facial features are much sharper and pointier than Ashley's. Ashley's are rounder and softer. This was pointed out to me by my nephew when he was 5 or 6. He could tell the difference when my sister and I couldn't. And after checking movie credits it turned out he was always right which twin was playing which character.

Very cute girls!!!! They remind me of my three year old (identical) twins. We didn't ever get the DNA test. After 3 years of having to "color code" them to be able to tell them apart....we KNOW they're identical. =)

They were also in separate sacs in the womb. That happens with identicals if they split early.

my cousin just had her twins dna tested as well. she was told by the doc and the lab that did the pathology report on the placentas that they were fraternal. Recent DNA test showed they were identical (5 years later). She used proactive genetics to do the test, same as me.

i guessed right as well. Of course the two have differnces, but as you said, fraternal twins are just siblings born at the same time. They dnt look any closer to each other than regular siblings. bahaha. thats funny! and STUPID!!! if u read the video properly, you wld know that identical means...that the egg splits AFTER conception, so, a fertilised egg already has all its DNA in place. It is either a girl or boy, NOT BOTH! So then, the (for instance) male egg SPLITS creating TWO BOYS! Or the female egg splits causing TWO GIRLS. NOT A BOY AND GIRL! Identical means they have the exact DNA, so OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE TO BE THE SAME GENDER!!! tutut. You cant have a half girl half boy egg!

there is a rare incidence called Turner's Syndrome (google it) where immediately after conception of identical twin boys, one of the twins loses a Y chromosome for an unkown reason, so instead of them being XY and XY, they are XY and XO, making the XO a female. The girl has many physical developmental problems. Once again, this is extremely rare, there is a slightly greater chance that it would happen to a singleton. 99.9999% of the time identical twins will be the same sex.

So much for the "sac theory." Doesn't the sac form after the zygotes get to the uterus? So they split in the fallopian tube. i think most monozygous twins probably split early.

Thank you for sharing your video. I'm a mother of frathernal twin girls born 3 months prior to yours. No one except their dad an I can tell them apart and no one believes they are fraternal. When they were born the doctor said they were 70% fraternal and only 30% identical...i'm starting to think she mixed those up. Anyway they are adorable! p.s. the song they sang at the end with big sis is the same exact song my girls love to sing and dance to...i thought that was such a coincidence.

I wonder if your doctor meant there is a 70% chance they are fraternal, 30% chance identical??  If you watch the Discovery Channel Twins Documentary (Blockbuster has it) it states this statistic with twins in separate sacs. That is actually what made us finally spring for the test!

I can tell Zach and Cody(on disney channel show "Suite Life") and I babysit identical twin boys and can tell them apart. With identical twins, one is usually chubbier in the face than the other.

Mary-Kate and Ashley ARE fraternal it's a known fact. fraternal CAN look like identical. Boy and Girl twins are ALWAYS Fraternal never Identical. Identical can only be the same gender. Fraternal can be same genders and different genders, just boy and girl can never be Identical.

I was also told that I have non-identical twins as I had two placenta's - my boys both had blue eyes and blonde hair.......my husband and I have brown eyes!! We also ordered DNA testing and sure enough they were identical. Apparently it is quite rare to have two placenta's but not uncommon.
