  • I love Spider... :-)

  • Mmmmm...Spider

  • I love Spider and all Pogues - present and past. I also love Letterman... but this is barf on a stick.

  • Amazing how that nut case Paul Schaffer can adapt at the drop of a dime to any song style, musician, or musical genre. I never liked him until my own music teacher, a Broadway musician, told me Schaffer is a wonderkind in the music business. If you want sound leadership quickly & understood perfectly -- you hire Schaffer & stand back. As for the Pogues - they have always been incredible musicians & songwriters with or without Shane. Thanks to Letterman for giving them that exposure.

  • gooooooo spider. the pogues rocked even without shane.

  • these aren't the pogues

  • Am i the only one who thinks that spider stacy is a badass?

  • @wholefuckinshow No, you are not

  • Paul Schaffer at aroun 2:11? LOL

  • I have to agree with the lot before me, the Letterman band does an impressively good job here!

  • the pogues without Shane were pointless. This was their finest moment though

  • So it wasn't pointless

  • @mod69 thye wern't pointless at all. they were seriously underrated. spider is amazing

  • what about drunken boat?they have a lot of good songs, not as good as with shane but anyway...

  • I saw the Pouges last summer and Spider sang this song. It was great. Several of memebers of the band did songs. Awesome show.

  • jem finer looks hot :)

  • Sounds like Joe Strummer :)

  • partsof this song always sound like Enola Gay to me...

  • Either way great song and great performance by Spider. He's not Shane but a decent alternative and great performer. Never has been and for me will never be a band as good as the Pogues at their best.

  • At around 3:06, Spider looks a little like Lou Reed.

  • Spider sang this in Boston at the House of blues and it was fuckin brilliant. Shane gave him his moment and he deserved it as this is spiders song.

  • Phil Chevron said in the forum on the Pogues web site that the Letterman people asked for just Spider and "maybe the guitar player" to play Tuesday Morning with the house band. As PC had just completed a tour of the US and had no desire to come back so quickly, Paul McGuinness went in his place.

  • spider's good but honestly, shane is a poet and a legend

  • After shane left the Pogues, the orginal line up did one more album. They did tour with it. So i have no idea why Spider is singing this solo. The singing is live, but the backing track isn't! And Paul McGuinness there is so very weird!

  • Have to point out that you are a bit off here matey. Spider is singing here because he became the lead singer when the band sacked Shane after his boozing got the better of him. They then continued on to do two more albums, Waiting for Herb and Pogue Pogue Mahone (This song is from the former). The the remainder of the band then split; Stacy, andrew rankin and james fearnely then went on to form the Wisemen. Sorry to appear as a know it all but this is my favorite band

  • When i said he was singing it solo i meant where are the rest of the pogues? And if you wanna be real to the point matey it was Joe Strummer who replaced Shane! Spider Replaced Joe Matey

  • Maybe Spider is singing this because he wrote it and always sings it. Also, the Pogues did two albums without Shane

Waiting for Herb and Pogue Mahone.

Letterman's band actually does a pretty good job.

  • Lettermans band is miming to the Pogues playing it! And Spider is singing it cos he was the singer in the pogues at the time! And Pogue Mahone wasn't with the orginal line up!

  • Are you sure Letterman's band is miming it? First, the tempo on the Pogues' record is much slower. Second, it's a great song but structurally very simple, which makes me think that Letterman's band - exceptional f*cking musicians - could master the song in a day or so. Makes me think they're playing it. Hmmm...

  • It's cool stuff, sure, just funny that Letterman billed them as the Pogues. Didn't look like Ranken on drums, kind of looks like Fearnley on the mandolin and is that Paul McGuinness playing guitar? weird period for them..

  • No they are not...trust me...the only one from the Pogues is Spider Stacey..the rest are session musicians and nothing to do with the original band.

  • Only spider was in the original pogues line up . Spot the pogue competition.

    Crap

  • Mmmm Spider =] Thanks for posting, awesome! =D

  • awesome performance.

    mad dog macguinness legend lol

  • I personally love this song, and I was very delighted to see them play it when I got the privilage of seeing them a couple years ago. That being said, its a great pop song, but not a great Pogues song. Shane = the Pogues. I like the two albums they did without Shane but I view it as a different band.

  • Very different. I do love it though. With Shane comes much more bombast but with spider comes a more tranquil and mature sound. I like both eras.

  • I know the Pogues, love the Pogues and this is my favourite ever song of theirs !

  • It's different, it's not shit. Spider Stacy shits gold, and this is no exception. Stop bitching.

  • I think I recognise the guitar player from Shanes band the Popes there, Paul McGuinness I believe. Can anyone confirm?

  • Yes, he was the Phil Chevron's guitar roadie at that time.

  • @leiferman13 He's with the popes doing vocals now. Saw them in Ottawa they left Shane across the sea for the north american tour.

  • This is fucking amazing hahaha. The Late show band is really doing a good job for NOT BEING THE BAND THAT DOES THE SONG... seriously- props to them and to spider for going on national television without the rest of the band! haha

  • That's not James Fearnley...

  • It's not just Spider. Fearnley is on the Mandolin. You mean Paul Schaffer was never actually in the Pogues?!? haha

  • Dream further thats not James Fearnley, in the original version he plays the accordeon..

  • Ironically the best song The Pogues wrote...

  • You jest I presume

  • Get real. If you think that this is the best song the pogues wrote you have a mind breaking realization coming. This is from their euro pop era of the early nineties-agreed it is a good song but any number of their earlier macgowan era cuts are FAR better

  • Well, this is the best Pogues song TO ME. OK?!

It is also their most successful single internationally, and the only one to make the US Hot 100.

  • The only Pogue on this video is Spider. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS GARBAGE?????????????

  • this was written about my mum.

    It's such a lovely song.

  • anyone know when this was?

  • Weird. That's Paul from the Popes on guitar... But the rest is all the Letterman band. Maybe they sent Spider ahead to do press and the rest of the band was still due on a plane?

  • or maybe the rest of them were on the piss

  • Guessing they were miming so they didn't need them!

  • the pogues are nothing without shane, great clip though. how come its only Spider there? none of those guys are in the Pogues!

  • "peacefrog", saying that is a bit unjust i think. I think that this song is one of the best Pogues-songs ever. The original with Spider singing is excellent. Shane is a really good songwriter but I think that Spider´s got a better voice....

  • Ya i agree. apart from his writing i think its his image that is important. Spiders got a good voice as well

  • Ha ha .. "aprat from his writing and his image" .. emm yeah take these two things away and you have half the population in my local .. you twit !

  • You like green day so you're opinion doesn't count you fuckin nob head

  • Clap Clap what a retort. Green Day doing a John Lennon classic sure beats Travis doing a Christina Agulera anything but classic .. Looks like you are the nob, cut you losses my friend and dont even respond.

  • ok i'll give you that one

  • It makes it all the better that the sad tosser on guitar doing the scissor kick at the start is not part of the band
