Military are taught that because generally it is a somewhat equal fight, both sides with kevlar vests and assault riffles. They are also in a mindset of war when they are in fact in a war zone (go figure). I don't know if you've been to college, but it is far from a war zone and that the constant state of mind that accompanies it.

By the time I came to terms with what was actually happening he had left my room. I got up, sprinted to the door and barricaded it with my body as my arm, just shot, was bleeding badly. In no way do I say I'm a hero, but I don't consider myself worthless, and if you ever got to know me, you'd quickly learn I'm very independent and do not need or even begin to consider everyone as "responsible for me".
