With the LED issue, I've heard a similar story where a microprocessor was setting bits by doing a read-modify-write on a port. LEDs act as very inefficient solar cells, and on a high-impedance input it's enough to raise the voltage to the point where it reads high. Of course on the write phase it stays high, regardless of its initial or intended state
