After moving to the U.S. from N.S. I absolutely CRAVE Keith's like you wouldn't believe. It IS more of a lager than an IPA but it is pure deliciousness! As for your comments RE: Crappy watered down American beers I have to agree. While there ARE some very good american beers, all "mainstream" American beer is tasteless, too low in Alchohol and popular due to advertising.
@nightmathzombieethan I honestly think they like watered down crap because it lets them feel more manly when they can drink 20 of them and still "maintain". Silly ad campaigns help as well. Beer is ridiculously cheap here, and as a lot of things in America, people prefer image and quantity over quality and substance. I can find many Canadian beers here, yet Keith's is unobtainable. I have 1 can of it hiding in the back of my fridge, which I will crack open when the zombie apocalypse begins!
yeah, it's crisp, clean and refreshing but so is seltzer water. They should change the name of this to just "blonde" or something. It tastes like a pilsner or lager. It's false advertising.
@Chad9976 I think it's still brewed as an ale, but by the time they are done with it, they've totally stripped it of even the minor ale characteristics that those golden ales and cream ales tend to have. Yeah, they have close to two hundred years of marketing behind them claiming it's an IPA, so I doubt they will ever stop, no matter how much the beer has changed over the years.
You are the same as me my friend,i live in Cape Breton and i grew up drinking this, and i have a love hate relationship with this beer, but i find a lot of other beers that get a higher rating don't taste as good as Keith's but good review i like the honesty that you gave ,having grew up with the beer, i look forward to your other videos .
I was really surprised when I asked for an IPA in a Winnipeg pub and got Keith's. But it really wasn't bad at all. It was reminiscent of one, but it got the job done.
I was really shocked by the lack of tallboys for purchase. Most of the beer was in 12 or 24 pack boxes or individual 500 mL cans. Beer here is bought in the boxes or 6 pack longnecks. In Europe, the longnecks are even skinnier, which I liked. Any reason why Canadians like cans?
I live and grew up in N.S. and i remember first drinking a kieths and it was awful. It has a very unplesent after taste to it and is horrible warm. I do enjoy the red amber ale though different taste without the after taste.
@ReservedRealist I believe that it is. I know Moosehead, which is a smaller brewery from the same area is available in random places like Southern California so I would assume that Keith's would probably be available. It is owned by Labatt, which is in turn owned by INBev (which also owns Anheuser-Busch). For that purpose alone, I would assume that it is available in certain areas; perhaps the likeliest area would be New England which is only a short distance from their brewery.
It's better than other big brewery beers - it's not quite lager, but it's not an IPA by a mile. It's a very good average beer. Give me a choice, and I'll drink Keiths over Blue, Molson, Bud, etc, but grab Propeller or Garrison for local Halifax brews.
you should be ashamed of youe self. talking down on Keiths...its the pride of nova scotia and a canadian institution...bad mouthing a part of our culture and heritage! for shame...FOR SHAME!! although it seems to taste better from a bottle.
actually, about the brewing only in nova scotia, AK has allowed a company to brew the same beer, but I believe they had to change something on the label.
Had this beer in a pub in montreal, tasted watered down so i bought the 12 pack and it tasted a lot better... oh and is it me or does montreal have a poor beer variety I went to 5 bars and all they had was carlsberg, molson dry, alexander keiths and guiness... kinda sucked I was expecting more
You know what's funny? I watched one of your reviews a long time ago and I was curious if you'd reviewed this beer, so I looked it up. I had no idea you were from NS though! - me too. :) Small world, as they say.
Yeah, I'm from Yarmouth and this is what everyone drinks. I'm in high school and very rarely can I get anyone to buy me anything better. I prefer Keith's Amber ale though.
It's ok to like Keith's, but I if you like Keith's then you'll like any other popular beer the same, for these kinds of beers I think preference is mostly just what reminds you of drinking in the park when you were 17 more than the appreciation of the distinct flavour of it. Molson Export is shit but I still get nostalgic when I take a sip because we alway used to get that when I was in high school. It's false advertising though they shouldn't be allowed to call it an ale, it's a lager.
keith's is fantastic, hard to find in the states tho. reminds me of the trips over the ambassador bridge from detroit to windsor when we were nineteen because the legal drinking age. slammed pint after pint of this shit. wish it was marketed better. great review as always.
very partial to keith's. what i used to drink when i would trip up to canada for those 3 day weekends in the air force. i really miss that beer and wish i knew where to order it.
I am no beer expert but have done quite a bit of homebrewing. If im not mistaken which I may be, IPA's are based on the amount of hop bittering oils present in the beer not the ABV. Great video by the way.
Well IPA's were first invented as a way of preserving ales that the British shipped to their troops in India in the 18th century (it was about a 6 month trip by ship). They did not have refrigeration and pasteurization then so they used more hops and alcohol content to help keep the beer from going bad.
So true IPAs tend to be more bitter and have a slightyly higher alcohol content of about 5.5% to around 7.5%. Modern versions can get up to about 20% however.
Well, I'm not much for summing up reviews unless the beer really bores me or if I have no personal history with it. And I'm not really appologizing for liking Keith's, I'm just being honest about the face that some will not like this beer as much because it's not a real IPA and because they didn't grow up drinking it.
Cheers. Not to burst your bubble, but being to first to watch one of my videos is hardly an amazing accomplishment considering how low-traffic my channel is.:)
