  • Anyone else get here from Rock and Rule?

  • @CoalarDrake Yeaahh... Youtube works in mysterious ways.

  • At 4:00 He has no tail, just looking like Foxee on Fantastic Mr. Fox.

  • Bauhaus-Party of The First Part.

like this comment if you looked this up because of that song.

  • Practice playing in a different genre? Naw man, demonic contract.

  • Well I'll be dipped. The voice of the Weasel is Mylar from Rock and Rule. ^.^

  • Yup. It's Canadian alright. Is the mouse supposed to be African?

  • GREAT STUFF........DONT FORGET....... COSMIC CHRISTMAS

  • 5:17 "Don't do it hard" ---- LOL

  • Wow. I like how a small company like this go out of their way to make a short film with fabulous detail like this. I love it! I wish Hollywood can put more effort into their animated films.

  • I actually have the book adaptation of the special. Found it a book sale. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I sure learned something important while watching this.

  • Devil May Care? Where's Dante?

  • Where did you find this gem? I haven't seen this in years.

  • 2:33.... Party Of The First Part, Bauhaus! tee hee

  • What's the story on this?

  • Why doesn't Nelvana make hand-drawn animated movies and shows. They were some of my all time childhood favourites. I'd share some of my ideas for movies to them if that's what it will take.

  • Anything? Would you, perhaps, GET A BETTER HAIRDO?

  • i watched this when i was young. i was glad to see it on here. i get to let my children see this movie. thanks so much for having it on youtube. do you know where you can get this movie?? God Bless You...

  • @jenaz72 bought it on amazon for 3 dollars a few years ago. You can also get "A cosmic Christmas" Nelvana's Christmas Special. Could only find them on VHS though. "A Cosmic Christmas" is on a tape with another cartoon "The Littlest Angel".

  • Holy Crap!

Only 4 minutes and I'm already emotionally invested in this.

  • I'm not buying that Wease is a weasel. He looks more like a wolf.

That aside, "Can I trust you?"

"Of course you can! I mean, all I did was cause an earthquake and destroy a part of the forest with my appearance, walk out of flames, say my name is Beelzebub, and breathe fire! Now sign this ever-growing contract in blood. I'll be expecting my first payment of sacrifical virgins at the end of the month."

  • Wasn't this the basis of Rock N Rule?

  • @amaxamon

Pretty much. This was their first try at the concept. They refined it for Rock and Rule.

  • Oh...my...goodness! This is why I LOVE YouTube! Stumbling into things like this is like entering into a time machine! In an instant, it's the mid-70's again...and I'm living in Rockwood, Michigan...and this SPECIAL gave me the ever-lovin' CREEPS while also entertaining me, and showing me the love (and music) conquers all ;>)

  • if this devil was the u.s. government, he wouldnt ask if she wanted to sign the contract, hed just say it was required by law

  • wow i am intresed by this and yet i just go to the polt :P

  • Aw man, thank you SO ridiculously much for uploading this! It gives me shivers of nostalgia watching it ^__^

  • of course the drummers black.

  • Hmmm Neither The Three Care Bears Movies Was Made in 1980s

  • Wild. My first TV memory! I was 4 and the Devil freaked me out, man.

  • Well at least she's better than that bitch from Care Bears II. She sold her soul just to be good at sports.

  • "Can he? Is the pope-" (Gets jabbed in the stomach)

Something tells me I don't want to find out how he was going to finish that. XD

  • @MWolfL Is the Pope Catholic? That was most likely what he was going to say.

    That's the common expression.

  • @NYG4LIFE123

Maybe, but then Devil jabbing him in the stomach doesn't make sense. Unless of course he hates hearing about popes and such, but I think Wheeze was going to insult the pope and Devil stopped him so that they wouldn't lose Jan's trust.

  • @MWolfL i was just going to comment that xD

  • I Loved the Bauhaus The Party Of The First Part. I own this film. It has great animation and great voice cast too. See How We Made The Devil And Daniel Mouse. It'd cool documentry about the making of the film. The is a awesome 70's animation that is the way I rememeber. The devil is something between an aligaterand a dragon.

  • Comment removed

  • saw this because of bauhaus :)

  • oh... my... god.. I've been looking for this for 20 years... literally... I'm happy now

  • Is the "Devil" in this an alligator or a dragon?

  • I never saw this before but the title intrigued me, I like it I only wish messages like this reach the children of today. We need another John Lennon damn it!

  • Jan's 1st album cover looks like neu's 1st album cover

  • Jan's 1st albu,

  • Jan's first

  • Beelzebub can I trust you?

    0:-)

    Okay I'll sign

  • Bauhaus used some audio from this...

  • I saw this in music class in the 4th grade once upon a time. Hardly remember it, but I did remember it better than some cartoons.

  • I'm from the Northern New Jersey Area, right next door to New York. And I saw it on WNBC channel 4 when I was about 10 years old. Talk about nostalgia!

  • Bauhaus - "Party of The 1st Part"!!!!

  • how is it she can be so nonchalant around the devil (THE F**KING DEVIL) and a rape vibe weasel

  • @ramjet94 She obviously doesn't know he's the Devil. Though, yeah, even then, the two of them were acting in such a menacing manner it's interesting that she can stay relatively calm when they're near.

  • Cool stuff.......

  • You know what?

The beginning of the film reminds me of Beetlejuice the cartoon.

As the matter of fact, it is from the studio who made Care Bears and

    Beetlejuice cartoons. COOL! GREAT UPLOAD!

  • i remember this cartoon i watched it at year 3 camp

  • Have it on DVD, as a bonus feature of Rock&Rule.

  • cartoons! they really never started as a only kids entertainment producte!

  • Here in the US it aired on the Disney Channel and i watched it in the 80's when i was 5 years old and enjoyed it. Nelvana was at their game.

  • All real blues men have sold their soul at the crossroads.

  • iI remembering watching this cartoon as a child. I loved it! thank you for uploading this movie. I thought I'd never she this cartoon again. Especially when almost all the kid shows these days are junk. If only they would bring great cartoons back and hopefully not ruin them. I'm going to try talking my youngest son in watching this with me next time. God Bless.

  • same voice as the narrator star in the second carebears movie.

if you sell out to the man you can lose your voice, and if you lose your voice... you lose your soul.

  • I remember seeing this when I was a kid. No longer kid could see this type of cartoons.

  • 5:57 what on earth!? lmao weasel turned superstar pose like a pro

  • 4:50

    AHHH! Dick cheney!!!!

  • Yes, trust the demonic lizard that comes out of a burning tree.

  • 1977 or 1978. I saw this as a kid.

  • WOW!! I haven't seen this since I was a kid!!

And did anybody notice those branches at 1:52?

  • Dialogue from this cartoon was used by the rock band Bauhaus in the song "Party of the First Part", found on some versions of The Sky's Gone Out.

  • solid animation, and strangely i never seen or heard of this... until now.

  • BAUHAUS

  • is it just me or is this show saying that rock is the devils music

  • @SinFantasy Of course it is. That's what makes it so awesome.

  • OMG i remember reading this little movie book in 4th grade!! :D

  • Jan's design and voice is so adorable!

  • I remember this movie being shown on Teletoon like 10 years ago

    kinda scary

  • Animation glitch; left arm, 2:50 ........I think this was supposed to be in the bar and his are is on a table

  • wish this was higher quality...

  • Very pretty animation and the characters are cute too.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • OMG I have wanted to see this ever since I was a teenager with black teased hair and wonky lipstick!

  • A remember that contract in Phantom of the Paradise. And there's a scene where she's singing that reminds me of Phoenix and Old Souls.

  • It's kind of scary but the Devil dresses just like my grandpa.

  • OH MY GOODNESS! I can't believe someone posted this. I used to wash this everyday after school way back in the day.

  • @mshb4 I finally found it! Sweeté

  • Oh wow I recognize the audio track from a bauhaus song "the party of the first part"

  • This is a spitting image of Rock 'N' Rule. I was 9 when I seen this in school back in 1980. It gave me the creeps up until I stumbled upon The Exorcist playing on TV a month later.

  • can someone upload this somewhere in like avi/mp4/wmv format if your have the rock and rule dvd could you please rip this off the special features as "bwaam" was saying, if you do so message me

  • Classic Nelvana.

  • It's a special feature on the Rock and Rule DVD, but I swear it's got scenes cut out/down.

  • as a child forty 33 years ago i had this video on VHS and played it every day on the families VCR it drove my mum mad then my cunt bitch sister taped over my copy and i was never able to see it again untill now and its still good made ,me get emotional at the fact i was so addicted to this cartoon as a child it even made a tear fall to my delite filled with child hood memories, cool lol

  • Does anyone Know the title of the song they always sing and the artist and is it on youtube or download anywhere? :0

  • they have this in the Rock and Rule DVD

    (2 disc edtion).

  • The edited version, like they cut:

    #1 - 00:08 - 00:24

    #2 - 09:28 -10:02

  • I dig Jan's 70s hairstyle.

Doesn't the animation seem much more detailed than the stuff we're used to now?

  • This is like "Phantom of the Paradise" for kids

  • Comment removed

  • "Hey, it's a cartoon, it's for KIDS! Lets air it during prime time around Halloween."

Cue millions of 6 year olds laying in bed later, freaked out and confused, staring wide eyed in the dark, going, "What the FUCK was that???"

  • No, actually they didn't . They waned to become animators. I know, I was one of them.

  • ???

  • I saw this and I became an animator. Cool huh ?

  • You were 6 when you saw this?

  • Funny. Your profile says you're 51.

    Silly YouTube.

  • OMG, so many memories! NOSTALGIA CITY!!!

  • they should do a remake of this movie and have the devil wear a shirt that says " WMG : post your videos and I will take your soooouuul"!! LOL

  • OMG I haven't seen this in FOREVER. So many childhood memories. Thank you for making this available!!

  • RANKIN-BASS PRODUCTIONS produced many of their tv holiday specials in Japan because of cheap labor.

  • I see.

  • Thank You very much I have'nt seen this in a vey long time

  • Beautifully animated.

And I also saw it long ago, too.

  • @Tsubahi I do not find the mouth on that Kennie with the devil well animated, but the rest of it. Is good. on my opinion.

  • Disney stole teh image of Hades in Hercules from this movie. Beelzebub. Figyre it out!

  • Is the beaver drummer supposed to be black?

  • Black beaver...

  • The reason I asked if if the beaver was was black was because of his afro.

  • At 3:31 Wheez Weasle almost makes a joke about the Pope. When Jan asks B.L. if he can really make her a star, Wheez replies by saying: "Can he? Is the Pope Cath--oop," then B.L. elbows him in the chest which knocks him to the ground before he could make his comment about the Pope being Catholic. Coincedentally, this animated special aired in October 1978 the same month that Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope John Paul II.

  • I wonder if any noticed that little snipit in this cartoon?

  • Didn't Nelvana distribute some U.S. cartoons for Saturday morning tv even if they didn't produce them like POUND PUPPIES?

  • Yes. After Rock & Rule fell through they took over the strawberry Shortcake series from it's originator Fred Wolf. Then they went agreed to do an adaption of The Care Bears Movie which was an instant smash in theaters. After two sequels Nelvana went the Hanna-Barbara route to Saturday Morning with shows like Beetlejuice and the Care Bears Family.

  • I see.

  • Didn't Nelvana produce a cartoon series in the 80s that aired on American tv too about a group raccoons? And they lived near a chemical plant that was run by a scheming, greedy, powerhungry weird looking dude with a long nose and he had little pigs as his minions? What was the name of that cartoon?

  • Nope, that was The Raccoons, that's a Kevin Gillis joint (Evergreen Raccoons Marketing, inc). The weird dude was Cyril Sneer, an aardvark.

  • So that cartoon wasn't produced by Nelvana. It was an American cartoon. Right?

  • No, Canadian - The Raccoons was actually the first cartoon series produced entirely in Canada I think.

  • But it wasn't Nelvana?

  • Cyril Sneer was the exact opposite of his father.

  • My comment makes no sense. What I meant to say was that Cyril Sneer had a son who was the exact opposite of his father.

  • who is cyril sneer?

  • He was greedy money hungry aardvark in the cartoon series THE RACCOON. Ask turquoise70 about it.

  • Yes it was called "The Raccoons"

  • It's hard to believe that our neighbor to the north and our biggest trading partner founded it's very first cartoon production only in 1971 whereas American cartoon productions have been around since the 1910s and 20s.

  • Maybe the Canucks had something better to do than make cartoons. Like mining maple surple.

  • I'm sure Canada has been producing it's own cartoons long before the 70s. It just wan't until 1971 that the first Canadian cartoon production was founded.

  • Yes I did ROCK AND RULE on TNT in 1994 very late at night around Christmas time. ROCK AND RULE was made more for teen agers and young adults while THE DEVIL AND DANIEL MOUSE was geared more for children.

  • @67nairb

I think Rock and Rule can be enjoyed by the family since it's rated PG. So you saw it on Rock and Rule on TNT with Heavy Metal, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival and American Pop? i was 12 in 93 when i watched them all on TBS.

  • @Johnlindsey289 I saw ROCK & RULE and HEAVY METAL and TNT not the other cartoons you mentioned. I think I saw a VAMPIRE HUNTER on TBS in the 90s. One thing I know, you'll never see these animated specials on CARTOON NETWORK. Why? Because they are 30-40 years old-much too old for CN to air.

  • @67nairb CN used to occasionally air older animated movies, such as 'Charlotte's Web.' They don't anymore, though (They can air LIVE ACTION shows and movies, yet they can't air animated classics?).

  • @Adamguy2003 blame the current CEO who sees it better to just import shows from our neighors to the north. which is ironic since that happens to be where he's from

  • Jan looked pretty snazy in those duds Wheeze conjured up for her, so 70ish.

  • But that pink suit she was wearing at rehearsal with the tassels hanging down looked looked like something out of the the Roaring 20s than the 70s.

  • Since this cartoon had a trial it should've been called a The Devil vs. Daniel Mouse.

  • Since this is a Canadian cartoon, Stan and Jan Mouse could've gone on welfare after they got fired. Canada, I think is a welfare state....lol.

  • I forgot to say Canada is a welfare state. I think.

  • What was that instrument Jan at the night club at the beginning of the cartoon? It looked like a zither?

  • My comment makes no sense here. I've skipped some words, so I'll try again. What was the instrument that Jan was playing at the night club at the beginning of the cartoon? It looked like a zither.

  • They say that the path to Hell is paved with good intentions as this cartoon had shown.

  • Was this cartoon done in full animation?

  • Okay, this is rather interesting to see after seeing Rock and Rule! I know they're based on each other, but its still fun to see the similarities.

  • Were Dan and Jan Mouse husband and wife?

  • Maybe at the end? I think they're just 'going steady' at first XD

  • Did these characters star in ROCK 'N RULE?

  • Not specifically, but Omar and Angel from Rock and Rule share some traits with Dan and Jan. Angel makes a diabolic agreement to become a star, just like Jan. Both couples play more traditional music, which makes them exiles in a world that's moved on. The two both share an understanding that doesn't blossom into love until the very end.

There's some marked differences too though. Omar is a rebel while Dan is laid back and Angel actually refuses her offer but is forced to take it anyway.

  • Whose offer?

  • Have you ever seen Rock and Rule?

You can look it up on Youtube actually.

She's offered fame and fortune from a magician/rock star named Mok.

  • But she wasn't as willing to be a rock star as Jan Mouse was in this cartoon.

  • True. Jan is more desperate to be famous. Angel I think is just angered that Omar never lets her sing her songs.

  • Does Chris Wiggins do the voice of the evil Mok as he did B.L. Zeebop aka the Devil in this cartoon? He did an excellent part as the voice of the Devil in TDADM. So convincing.

  • I agree! But Mok is voiced by Don Fancks who has a different kind of deep and resonating voice :)

  • I see.

  • @67nairb I don't think so. They appear to be, if not close friends, than no more than boyfriend and girlfriend

  • @StarlightHaven Maybe they get married at the end of the cartoon.

  • Does anyone notice that Jan and Dan is a take on beach duel Jan and Dean

  • Such awesome music for a cartoon! I wonder why none of it made it on the real airwaves?

  • I watched this when it first came out in October 1979. I was 13. Never forgot it. Love the music (John Sebastian (loving spoonful). Excellent!!

  • Me too. Infact I think it was on Halloween night of that year. It aired on WNBC Channel 4. I haven't seen this cartoon in 30 years.

  • I remember this from 4th grade! I think it might have inspired "The Apple" somehow...(Same story with a folk duo torn apart by the devil after she becomes a glam rocker...)

  • OMFG THANK YOU...I VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS EVER SINCE BAUHAUS SAMPLED IT.......so grweat to finaly freakin see it... its like finding king tuts tomb...fuckin thank you

  • ME TOO!!! THANKS, havent seen this since I was REAL YOUNG!!

  • omgosh this is really neat, I love Daniel "can I trust you?" to the very devilish bealzibub

great character design too, I love these old animations

  • This was in Bauhaus' 'Party of The First Part'. Amazing short film. :) I love how they designed everyone. I think the devil is played by the voice of Megabyte.
