Those charts are meaningless with no comparison of last year. I'd be interested to compare. I live in the UK. We seem to be heading for an unusually cold winter this year. However, we were plunged into an unusually cold winter last year too. If there is a break down of the Gulf Stream the effects were showing last year BEFORE the BP oil spill. I find it doubtful that oil would impact the flow of oceanic currents, but I do prefer an extreme winter, so if it is to do with BP I thank them :-)

This eddie that broke off the main current happens ALL the time, and is what contributed to Hurricane Katrina's strength. there were TWO wells,leaking out, and the one they admitted was leaking, then claimed to have dealt with is not the one that was hemorrhagic...it kept on pumping that poison into the gulf, may still be for all we know. . water samples show HUGE increases in poisons. your assessment is in error.

@finodigrassio To all of those who said that the gulf oil spill "isn't as bad as they made it out to be", let me just tell you that it is not only as bad, it is far worse. Marine biologists have found miles of "tar mats" covering the gulf floor from Florida to Louisiana. These tar mats range from a foot or 2 deep to as much as 40-50 feet in depth. 40 to 50 feet! That's disgusting.

@finodigrassio CAN you explain to me how a little smucge of oil can cause so much of the wild life living in the gulf to DIE? The ROV' s showed beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the gulf floor was fracturing. Hence, no more video to watch. Why? cuz oil and volitiles are still seeping out of every weak spot they can find. Thus the problem has grown and will continue so. Corexist is use to hide the truth. But not this. We need a massive clean up program immediatly.

@finodigrassio AS long as the barrier between warm and cold water remains intact, they go on their merry way, but the minute the laminar flow is disrupted, then just like a plane in flight, the result is a stall. Then a crash. Look it up for yourself, then respond back.

For one thing, the Gulf Stream had already been weakening for 30-40 years. The oil was the straw that broke the camel's back. It breaks down the boundary layers between warm water and cold, causing the Stream to lose velocity and dissipate into eddy currents.

Anyways, ROFFS was tracking eddy current "Franklin" live during that time period, in conjunction with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory they were combining SAR (Synthetic Aperature Radar) and EnviSAT's ASAR data to track the water masses, and they showed no break-up of the loop current, just an eddy formation event which their reports say is normal. You can see the videos on their Deepwater Horizon tracking page ( Google ROFFS Oil Spill ). The current is still alive and well.

As far as our knowledge reaches we know that what starts the ice ages and the coming out of ice ages is the so called "Mylankovitch cycles" google it.
But yes , if the gulf stream is to be stop europe will face cold conditions it has hapenned after the end of the last age and send europe to freazing times for about (not sure) 100 years. but because the Luke current stop it doest mean the gulf stream stops , depends on why is the the luke current disturbed.
