The announcer's name is Charlie Van Dyke. He's a veteran announcer, was a radio DJ, and has many stations under his name (chief among them many ABC and CBS O&O stations). His voice has been described as "God-like". I would agree.
@catbeast2007 ...They didn't lead until 3 got wrecked badly in the mid-90s affiliation switches, then they roared back until the NBC network just started to fall right out the floor.
Wow...I remember seeing this when I first moved to metro Phoenix in '92. And I had a HUGE crush on Bill Austin. Sadly, though, both Bills have passed away...Bill Denney in 2000, and Bill Austin just two days ago. Thanks for posting this. :)
KPNX had a theme music and it was "12 News Arizona's News Station" They would have that at the end of their newscast with a man and woman climbing the this mountain
That came later this same year. I think this package was made in 1990 (John Christopher Burns Design as well) and that it lasted into sometime in 1992. The whole package lasted 12 years (Gari's "News Station") but has seen a run even into today on certain stations in upstate New York dating back to 1993. WIXT (now WSYR - still using this package) tried to fit "9News, Making A Difference, Central New York's News Source" in there.
She was with the station, may have been an anchor elsewhere. Kent Dana who is seen here, is still in the valley today on TV, though he now is on KPHO ch 5. One thing I have noticed, ch 12 has been using the same announcer which to this day still announces the openings of 12 newscasts.

Why you refer the Gannett logo to a "Death star"? LoL, the original call signs for KPNX channel 12 was KTAR or "Star TV" until the late 1970's to become KPHX (alike the PHX Phoenix airport) and today, KPNX-TV while they still own KTAR radio can be caught in night hours in Sou. Cal. on 620 khz. Jack, why you called the logo a "death star"?+
Correction: KTAR became only KPNX (smacks my head), I must got mixed up with another TV station. It doesn't hurt to look up the internet or the wikipedia articles on that TV station's history and current profile. +
Has less to do with Gannett, as it has to do with Television by Design (TVbD) who designed these graphics. WFTV, WBAL, KSBW, among others, also had "Flash Zoom Out" opens. Gannett just happened to be a very loyal client of TVbD.
The opening music almost resembles the opening music for the first few seconds on KING 5 News in Seattle. In which, Seattle's sounds better hands down.
hard to believe charlie is still the voiceover, but where is kent dana since he left kpho?

@tmisch64 Also, most people best remember Charlie Van Dyke during the 1980's, when he frequently sub-hosted "American Top 40".

That's the same year they first used the current 12 logo.

I had no idea that Bill Austin used to do weather for KPNX. Did a little research and found that this aired on 6 February 1992.

Why is that "Flash Zoom Out" thing with Gannett?
hkfreak 4 years ago
I know that KOCO ABC 5, in Oklahoma City used to b owned by Gannett. So all Gannette stations did that, Flash Zoom Out.

I've seen a ton of stations use that font that KPNX used (and still uses) for the 12 logo. I have no idea what it is though.
