  • what's the song @ 2:50 that he played the devil? which act in the aria?

  • Can someone name all the songs he's singing? Please?

  • @chanballer Chi mi freno in tal momento? (uncredited) aka "Sextet" from "Lucia di Lammermoor" "Shortnin' Bread" "Largo al factotum" (uncredited) From "The Barber of Seville" Music by Gioachino Rossini Sung by Nelson Eddy "Tristan und Isolde" Music by Richard Wagner "Mefistofele" Music by Arrigo Boito "Mag der Himmel Euch Verbegen" (uncredited) Music by Friedrich von Flotow "Ride of the Valkyries" (uncredited) Music by Richard Wagner
  • One of the most powerful things that Disney has ever done.

  • rhis is kinda simbolic isnt it

  • I love Nelson Eddy! Read about his life! Its so interesting, loving a woman already married and dying of a broken heart shortly after she passed away! I saw this cartoon when i was very little and I never forgot it, I was so happy when I found it on youtube only 4 years ago!

  • The lesson here boys and girls?

It's okay to murder wonderful creatures that defy logical explanation because when they die their souls will end up in heaven.

  • WHY DOES THIS STILL TERRIFY ME TO MY CORE.

  • Thumbs up if you remember this from your early childhood (along with the story about Ferdinand the Bull and Lambert the sheepish lion)

  • What is 1:53 a quote from specifically? I gather Tristan und Isolde but where exactly?

  • So sad :(

  • in the end what is the name of that song (4:44)

  • @nNet0 'Mag der Himmel euch vergeben' from the opera "Martha" (1847) by Friedrich von Flotow

  • @rossyxan oh ty so mutch =D

  • God this cartoon destroyed me as a kid. Such a sad/happy ending. :'(

  • Heh, pretty nice visual pun with the people covering their heads under the seagulls.

  • Well, what did you expect in an opera? A happy ending?

  • @SuperSenshi HAH! I saw what you did there ;)

  • I cried.

  • remember when Disney actually gave a crap? yeah, those were nice times.

  • Doug Walker reminded me of this one. Disney has some deep forgotten roots in my past.

  • Going to resurrect the question: anybody know what he's singing as Mephistopheles? Even as a child, that bass thrilled me to the core.

  • @sanityismadness

I think it's from Mefistofele, but i'm not sure.

  • @leon14320

more or less. The opera is Faustus.

  • @Linranis Ah, thank you.

  • @sanityismadness Mephistopheles' terrifying aria from Mephistophele. That's the only thing I was able to find on it. And I don't know where to find it. If you have better luck finding it, please message me! :) that one is probably my favorite song from the 4 that were performed with Willie on stage.

  • @sanityismadness He said "Je suis Mephisto [...] (sorry, I didn't understand it) Je veux la vie" which means "I'm Mephisto [...] I want (your) life"

  • @sanityismadness

    je suis mephisto

    roi d'enfer

    je veux ta vie

(I am mephisto king of hell

    I want your life)

  • or "roi de l'enfer"maybe? I'm not sure...

  • @blueberrette more like "roi des Enfers" ;-)

  • Thumbs up if Doug Walker sent you here. ;)

  • @smartboyathome 56 people were sent here by Doug Walker

    2 people were not

  • is it me or does this short have some sort of spiritual underlying message? and not because the whale went to heaven at the end

  • @ChannelBluesy No, at the time, depiction of heaven was normal no matter your preference in religion. It was accepted as a cultural norm. Nowadays, heaven is synonymous with spirituality and is more or less accepted.

  • Thanks to the wonderful Nelson Eddy who lent his voice and humour to this cartoon.

  • Well that's no suprise of willy getting killed. I mean if someone actually discovered a singing whale, in real life. they wouldn't just let it sing. they would kill it and disect it.

  • Just Like Michael Jackson- a miracle that will never die

  • The seagull is quite Donald Duckish

  • Grotesque whale, especially singing Pagliacci. Probably the weirdest Disney character ever. Thank God the merchandising never caught on.

  • This cartoon always made me want to top myself when I was a little kid! It's so depressing!!

  • 2 black and soulless people have no hearts.

Who could dislike a benevolent singing whale that FUCKING DIES at the hands of a greedy business man?

  • @scoshinfunkenstein whyd u say "2 black" ?

  • @Heylilvelvet Because I'm obviously a racist...

The term "black" as used here represents evil rather than a physical characteristic. It's a figurative term used throughout literature.

  • @scoshinfunkenstein gee, thats to bad. -_-''

  • you Italian bastard!!! YOU KILLED WILLY!!!

  • GREAT introduction to OPERA. even had an "opera ending" with Willie "erschlagen"

also check out the Bugs Bunny-Elmer Fudd classics "What's Opera. Doc?" for the music of Richard Wagner and "Rabbit of Seville" for the music of Gioachino Rossini.

  • @3:00-3:12..I love that singing :D

  • @CIMusgrave me to, i cant get that low at 3:05 O.O

  • When I first saw this cartoon, I was really impressed by the beautiful singing voices. However, it's sad that Willie had to die at the hands of Tetti-Tatti.

  • I absolutely love the part with Willie dressed as a devil! :D

  • @GremlinsandCrites what is the aria from Mefistofele that Willie is singing?

  • @LeRinkRat

I am trying to figure that out too!!! I am sure its from Faust, not Mephistofole, but I'm not sure....any help from the YouTuve world??

  • @JT826

I'm for sure NO expert on either Gounod's Faust (French) or Boito's Mefistofele (Italian) BUT checking some YouTube posts of arias from each, it sounds like an altered lead in to Boito's "ecco il mondo" from Mefistofele.

BUT it could also be an altered version of the lead in to "Le veau d'or" from Faust.

they DID take some liberties with the wording of Willie's arias.

  • It's all right least Willie is in a better place where he can sing forever

  • Could someone please tell me the name of the opera he´s singing in heaven? just beautiful!!!

  • 3:04 i cant get that low! i must practice o_o

    medium:laaaaaaaaaaaaa

low: viiiii(cough cough!) i cant do it -_-''

  • @TheAtlanticDan it can be :)

  • We;ere living in a world where beauty is dying. When I go to an opera, I am surrounded by people who are over sixty. . .almost no young people. As an English teacher, I stood by as my students were forced every day to study for tests (no reading of classics, no enjoyment of art or music allowed). Music and art programs are being cut because schools and the general population don't care. But unlike Willie, there is no heaven. . .only the blandness of corporations and mass culture.

  • Does anyone know what opera or song willy was singing in heaven at the end?

  • @dwestbrook75 "Mag der Himmel Euch Verbegen" enjoy !!!

  • @ferboamorte Thank you

  • Wow... I vagely remember seing bits of this cartoon in a disney montage that was on TV about 25 years ago. But that version ended with him singing at the met and lapping up the applause.... only after watching this now, 25 years later have I found out he dies in the full version. :-(

  • 2 people are little bitches who get butt hurt over sad endings. LOL

  • Heartwrenching.

  • disney doesnt need blood and graphic violence to frighten children.

  • I thought there was a glimmer of hope for willie when we see him jumping out of the water, I only felt worse when we find out he's dead. But seeing him singing in heaven made me feel a little better.

  • @bige81892 But I don't care what the narrator said, I hate the guy who killed him!

  • @bige81892 i had the same thing when he kept jumping i was like "come on willie! get that harpoon outta ya! your stronger than that dumb tetti tatti!!" but when it all became silent i was like "im gona kill u tetti -_-"

  • How come Willie is still jumping out of the water after he is harpooned? Still sad though! :'((

  • @EdwardDavies1 I'm guessing that the harpoon did not willie him the instant it struck him.

  • @EdwardDavies1 i think he was trying to get it out when he got injured but it got deeper until it killed him at the ocean floor D':

  • I remember this a loooong time ago...Still makes me cry :-(

  • I love this cartoon. Whales actually do sing and it is a marvellous thing, but that doesn't stop mankind from killing them. What a lasting message.

  • It'd take one hell of a stage to hold that whale. XD

  • its been years since a cartoon has captured my attention in such a way

  • It always brings me to tears when willy dies, but I guess the narrator is right us people are not just ready, or used to miracles. I mean if they acually did find a singing whale, or any other miracules creature, they would probably end up, being disected, or worse.

  • I saw this when I was very little, and I remembered the death scene being really drawn out... I guess that's just the imprint it left on a small child's mind. Still a great piece of animation though.

  • When I was 8 years old I saw this movie about 10 times in the ship's movie theatre while sailing from Australia to America. This part always made me very, very sad, and I would hope each time that this time Tetti Tatti would realize that it was the whale singing. Great to see this again after so long.

  • I miss this animation. After years of watching this I still pick up on new things like picking up on emotions I never noticed before.

Example for this time: as he was jumping after being harpooned and trying to get as far away from the boat as possible, even to the degree of breaking part of the boat. How he died had him with no face, just looking like a common whale getting killed, as opposed to his more animated self when he sings -End pretentious film studenty comment.- xD

  • *tears up* Le Bravo! BRAVIS!!!!!!

  • I hate opera but this was good

  • fire-breathing sperm whales scare the shit outta me...

  • Thank you so sooooo much for posting this! I am in my 20s no, and I used to be obsessed with this cartoon when I was a little child. I would draw whales dressed up in a demon's costume and my kindergarden teachers thought I was weird, hehehehe. Nelson Eddy had a great voice! And the heaven scene is so touching.

  • Man,there are some truly powerful images in this short. That Heaven sequence is just fantastic. Keep on singing,Wille.

  • I remember watching this as a really small child (I'm 20 now) so wonderful to see it again!

  • @Caiaphas18

    that's sad

  • @Caiaphas18

    hell yessssss......

  • 0__o he....he died?! dats sad

  • Such a beautiful thing. BTW, happy 110th birthday, Nelson Eddy.

  • After all these years i have finally found this cartoon. I watched it when I was, I don't know maybe 7 or 8 years old. It still saddens me to watch Willie dying.

  • I always cry at the very ending, even after all those years, willie is so charismatic, happy, so exempt of any kind of evil or meanness... He didn't deserve to die =/

    Just love this cartoon, thanks.

  • Part from 2:46 is the best

  • @emilybradshaw06 There is such thing as Heaven and God. but the rest I do believe except the first part. Tetti Tatti, i seriously wanted to kill him myself when i was younger... ok i still do but ill admit it when i was younger i didnt know what was going on xD till now O.o

  • oh my god they killed willy

    you basters

  • Fitting that the ending aria should be "Mach der Himmel euch vergeben" (May heaven forgive you) ... very clever :)

  • Wish I knew the aria where he's dressed as the devil ... anyone know?

  • @rossyxan "Mephistopheles", a legit classic. You might also remember a portion of it from "Batman Begins".

  • Disney at its finest :')

  • I would have totally shit myself when he bowed. Man, I had'nt seen this cartoon since I was little. I always had loved it and I always will. Sad though.

  • 3:04 man that's low..... o_o

  • I have always loved this short, I am glad I got to see it one more time.

  • Horrible as it is to say it, it actually makes sense that Willie was killed at the end: after all, what is Willie but an opera singer, and what are operas but wonderful stories with a sad end?

  • TOOO SAD

  • wtf...

"Once there was a whale who could sing.

    It imagined itself getting famous.

While doing so he got killed.

    The End"

  • What's the name of the song at 2:46?

  • I remember when Disney Channel played good cartoons.

  • I love this cartoon but it's not fun watching his 3 uvulas shake around it's a lil gross lol

  • @Armidillodude lol yea a little. but im practicing his deep vocal parts, its hard ._. xD

  • Was anybody scared of the Whale when he was the Devil?

  • @dolphinluv2413 I was when i was little yes but he looks better as an angel :)

  • All I know is...When I get to heaven, I'm so gonna sing with willie.

  • 2 people harpoon willy

  • HAHA! Bugs Bunny-What's Opera Doc! Another one of my faves!!!

  • wow I watched this when i was just a little kid. funny when you look back at stuff like that, certain things about yourself start to make sense. Now I know why I have always had a strong mistrust of impressarios!

  • Social commentary! In a time when killing these magnificent creatures was accepted even one as talented at Willie is not safe.

  • @phuffersail i think the message is more about that humans tend to destroy what we don't understand.

  • if i recall corectly it was my first cartoon i ever saw when i was a lil kid and im still watching it cuz i like the music of it.... what is kinda odd cuz ima streetdancer ..i think there is just something magical on this cartoon and music..... Go Willie !!!

  • Poor Willie :,(

  • old cartoons were the best :)

  • This cartoon is a good example how stupid mankind can be.

  • I've had nightmares about this cartoon... I saw it as a kid but I never knew what it was called! I cried for three days after I saw it though.... D: NOOOO!!!!!

  • 3:20 I must have blocked this part from my mind when I was a kid. Its all coming back to me now

  • I cried when Willie died

  • @nobodysperfect06 Me too, when I was about 6.

  • I think this is the most interesting, heartfelt, and beautiful cartoon I have ever watched. I just stumbled upon this while searching for cartoons, And let me tell you, this is the video I fell in love. As a teen now, I never see this on TV because Hannah Montana, JBros are dominating disney, which is full of crap cause their shows are humorless and mediocre at best.

I wish walt disney never died so he could produce more of this classic. Unlike now, shows are very mediocre.

  • @musicChick023 I know... COME BACK WALT!! Make more classics or we'll have to do it ourselves :O that be kinda cool :) ill change that, RLY cool :D

  • It was the time Disney made REAL cartoons. With a story and beautiful pictures... Not like those stupid 3D movies!! I've always loved this cartoon :)

  • lol, I like how willie the whale got into the character he was singing as.

  • The three tenors in one guy ..... person... whale lol

  • RIP WILLIE.

    LOVE YOU :p

  • The fire scene used scare the crap outta me when i was a kid. It still kinda does now

  • what song is the mephistopheles part? i know its from the opera by Arrigo Boito, but which song is it?

  • The song Willie sings when he is in Heaven is called "Mag der Himmel euch vergeben".

It is Lyonel's aria from the opera Martha that was composed by Friedrich von Flotow. The lyrics can be found here:

    opera-guide.ch/libretto.php?id=119&uilang=de&lang=de

    and another execution, here:

    Cheers from Brazil

  • I saw this when i was little and I always remembered the ending. That was about 20 years ago.

  • the end used to make me cry because it's just so damned beautiful.

  • If there is singing in Heaven, it is in Italian and Hebrew.

  • Trust a disney cartoon to be able to still bring a few tears to my eyes.

  • Does anyone know what part is the one they're singing in Tristan und Isolde?

  • @ZackTheGopher i think the song is moon river

  • Disney made animation into art. I wonder how self absorbed fools like the creator of Family Guy can sleep at night considering all the trash he speaks of Disney when it was Disney who truly made animation what it is today. Seth can make people blush with trash humor, but the masters of animation can bring people to tears when they employ their skills.

  • very sad stiory

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It was one of my absolute favourite cartoons when I was little, and even all these years later I still love it. It's sad, but so beautifully animated and the music is outstanding.

  • thats cartoon made me cry when I was a child.

  • Is Willy played by Nelson Eddy?

  • @Triassicc Yup. He did all the voices.

  • @Triassicc lol yup i just searched him up 2day :) RIP both willie and him :(

  • His opera really is beautiful! I love this movie!

  • I used to watch this on tape everyday growing up.

    And.. I STILL cried. Dammit.

  • @MuffinCupid +1 Then end always got me. It did again today, years later.

  • *sniffs* beautiful....just beautiful.

Heartbreaking as far as Disney goes, I never thought I'd feel sorry for a cartoon, operatic whale.

  • Disturbing end, really 0__o

    No typical Disney-ending.

  • that's what made Bugs Bunny so great in the 50's and 60's. Bunny Of Seville? come on that is classic stuff. before PC sucked the life out of kids shows

  • I remember the first time I saw this, as a kid. I tried to hold in the tears, but it was the glistening pearly gates at the end that finally slammed it home to me that he was dead, so I blubbed away.

  • anyone know what the aria is at the end??

  • Lionel's Prayer from the German opera Martha.

  • "Don't be too Harsh on Tetti Tatti"

YEAH RIGHT!!! He Killed a Whale on the premise He'd swallowed an Opera Singer just from looking at a Picture of "Jonah and the Whale"

Wanting Publicity for "rescuing a singer, from certain death"

I say String him up and Persecute him for Killing an amazing Creature like Willie

  • @CyndellWarrior

Tell it friend! Down with people that deliberately murder innocent animals like whales!

  • @Digitalfairy

Thanks, and personally i still say: Hang Him!!!!!!

  • @CyndellWarrior LOL but I agree

  • @ThePaul1E

    Thankyou

  • @CyndellWarrior dont be too harsh because he didn't understand.... these are words that can be applied to any situtation. thnk about it we arnt too harsh on people from dark ages because they didn't understand, just like in 1000 years now people will look back on how we didnt understand. lets hope they aren't too harsh on us.

  • @fizzle455 this is true

  • @CyndellWarrior I'm sure they did!

  • @CyndellWarrior Can we torture him before killing him?

  • @AnaShadowWolf

Be my guest, i'll bring the Iron Maiden

  • @CyndellWarrior i say prosecute all whalers... especially the japanese who apparently can find no other food source but endangered whales...

  • @blackblood

they aren't hunting whales for food, they're hunting whales for their oil and skin, they drop the left overs in the ocean to rot

  • @CyndellWarrior they don't leave them to rot they would be punished by law. they kill 100's of whales a year supposedly for research but they butcher and package the whales at sea then sell them at market and to school systems. the japanese representatives even say that nobody has the right to tell them what they should and shouldn't eat... they refer to it as "food culture". They also like dolphin meat. i tried posting a link with more info but it didn't work...

  • @blackblood

try watching "Whale Wars" I've seen the episode where the Ship chasing Japanese whalers find a Ship that was dumping Skinned and dead whale carcasses into the ocean, they were also missing their tail fins, so maybe they use that for the food; point is, this show is filmed in real time, inother words it's happened this year, just earlier this year, so you can trust me when I say there's whalers out there dumping Whale Carcasses in the ocean left to rot

  • @CyndellWarrior on Whale Wars they show the meat being processed and also at market. i think i'm missing some episodes as i can only afford netflix. in the documentary The Cove they show the massive slaughtering of dolphins which they process and sell (sometimes marketed as whale meat) to the public. they also put dolphin meat in the school system (as well as whale) which is bad because the last time they did that the children died of mercury poisoning. idc what way you look at it it's still bs.

  • @blackblood Cont'd:

I'll try looking for where you read this, i didn't know about the Dolphin Meat, that's gross!! I've always been told Dolphin meat was bad for you and bad as a Food Culture source because of their lifestyle and their Diet. that's evil in of itself. Still though, Whale Wars showed a Japanese ship dumping Whale bodies. so I'm not exaggerating when I say this, or making it up.

  • @CyndellWarrior the only episodes of whale wars i've seen don't show that so i wouldn't know... but the examples i've mentioned come from the first two seasons... whale wars says that the japanese set a quota for as many as 50 humpbacks a year to be killed... and as far as i and the u.s. are concerned, that species is endangered. i'm pretty sure you're not supposed to kill endangered animals but w/e i guess the whalers have their own rules and opinions on that

  • @blackblood

yeah, it's called working the paper; on paper they're "Collecting tissue Samples" and paper is all their government really cares about, and as long as the US animal Protection agencies are shown the "Paper" the japanese file, without any hint of fraud or anything else shady apart from the fact they're still whaling, unfortunately they're rules say they can't touch the japanese for what they're doing

and it's cuz of the most evil word in the english Language "evidence"

  • @blackblood Cont'd:

Our state officials always say they need "Evidence" to prove an unlawful, a TRULY unlawful act is being commited, and like in comic books they don't go by Vigilante statements so the guys chasing the whalers in Whale wars go unheard DX || and because "On Paper" we're basically being told the Japanese aren't whaling (yeah right) our Offices won't do anything XP

  • @CyndellWarrior i'm really not surprised by human stupidity... everybody thinks that they are entitled to everything so they end up just fucking it up for everybody including themselves... i bet the japanese would eat the whales into extinction and then totally deny it/justify it in some ridiculous manner... i just hate people. there seems to be no reason why anybody should care about other people when there is nothing good about anybody. selfish assholes.
