I loved this movie!!! I gotta say, probably the most entertaining 3 hour epic ever! It did get a little slow after 2 hours at some points, but the frog thing was incredible. Great movie, Julianne moore is a BRILLIANT actress!!!!
It's too bad this movie was over looked. It never got the recognition it deserved. The movie was incredible and the cast were incredible. Ranks in my top 3.
IMO, "Magnolia" is one of the best movies ever made. I've watched it at least 25 times, and at a three hour running length that's 75 hours dedicated to one film ! I don't regret a minute of it....
I would have yelled louder. I love the movie & the scene & the actress, but I just wish she had yelled LOUDER. I've been enraged before, & it's real, it works, when you just AHHHH!
The character (the actress too) could not bring herself to the "gestalt" of the moment (except momentarily in the word "WRONG"), which would have existed only if she had connected with the anger. It's a process.
And me? I have the balls, the indecency to make comments, to question? I have sickness all around me.
i´m sorry but "chemists" or pharmacists are not just drug dealers like some of you have said. some of them tend to be very judgemental, especially with the enormous amount of medication julianne moore´s character was talking in magnolia.
i do not think this scene is un realistic. quite the contrary.
in any event...her acting is wonderful. the scene still haunts me after many years of watching it for the first time.
one of my favorite things about this movie is that at first all the characters seem like crazy bitches or douche bags, but by the end of the movie almost all of them are actually just victims who don't know how to cope
@Groundbase . . Holy Moly! . .You just turned on the lightbulb for me with this film . . I knew all of the characters were "no perfect" but the way you said "...just victims who don't know how to cope" . .THAT MAKES SENSE !!!! *MindBlown*
Epic scene for me. I totally identify. And I love the way she turns on the second guy after bawling the first guy out., Fuck you, too, don't you call me LADY. Shame on you, too. Shame on both of you.
well. i tell you... it's even better than bett davis. it's a scene an actresse would die for. maybe, it's not better then sophie's choise, but it's the greatest. every time i cry. cause i have a simular situation. it's all true. thats the value.
AWESOME!! I went all postal on a guy when I was buying beer and my Daddy's medication when he was dying. Why do these pricks have to make comments? I LOVE this movie. And thank you for sharing. I'm gonna watch this again.
"Magnolia" was the last P. T. Anderson movie I liked. "Punch Drunk Love" was all but unwatchable except for the exchange between Adam Sandler and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and "There Will Be Blood" was downright awful. He's not a period director; he should just stick to making smaller movies like this and "Boogie Nights." The same goes for his flame war rival, Kevin Smith. As much as I like him, only "Clerks II" came close to his former brilliance.
@cubdukat what the fuck? your put clerks 2 over boogie nights, and there will be blood? im sorry i just cant believe that. i feel sick to my stomach all of the sudden
@annabellwells The film was 'too difficult' to win an oscar, not to mention how it sorta bombed at the box office. Which isn't to say it made no money, but considering TOM CRUISE is in the film (which usually guarantees 50 or so million by itself) this movie underperformed financially which probably disappointed those who'd be handing out the awards. Who knows..
@And8But That makes the Oscars a farce then. The award should be on the acting and dramatic effect. Thanks for telling me. magnolia will always be up there for me,
This scene affected me most....to know that this Andersen kid had knowledge of this kind of experience and how it can be so devastating still stuns me...who are you, PT??? I believe you are channeling both Einstein & Freud, while the comedy still prevails, is unbelievable!!! I AM IN AWE!!!
A great, great stunning scene...I kind of felt that this was going to transpire to a big confrontation on first viewing....as the scene ratchets up the simmering tension beautifully and Moore really manages to create a tangiable atmosphere around herself...while it plays out.
I honestly can't imagine anyone else ever playing this part...it seems unthinkable.
One of many literally 'stunning' scenes from just an absolutely mindblowing movie...Anderson is a true artist.

im not saying she is a bad actress, she was great in far from heaven. but if you want to win an oscar you cant just cry and complaint, you need to act like a normal human being and i felt like she was trying to hard here. try watching fargo with frances mcdormand. thats how i gotta act in a movie if you want an oscar.
Great actors don't act because they want to win an Oscar. They act because they are genuinely passionate about what they do, and Julianne Moore clearly falls into that category.
@ gjendemsjo: Since when is being "nominated" for or "winning" an Oscar the ultimate standard for all great actors? Gary Oldman,Ian McKellen and others have never "won" an Oscar and they're FAR better actors than most who DO win Oscars. Anyway, I've always thought the Oscars was just a garbage ceremony "supposedly" dedicated to the art of film.
She should've won the Oscar for this scene alone. It's been years since I first saw the film and she haunts me still. Members of the Academy, suck my dick! Shame on you!
she wasn't nominated because she had also done 'end of the affair' that year and i guess the academy thought that was the better performance. It's a shame that she doesn't have an Oscar

I'll say it again and again, Julianne Moore should have won for her role in The Hours instead of Catherine Zeta-Jones' good, yet overrated performance.
It was related to the introduction about Fortean phenomena and emphasized the improbability of the synchronicity and interconnectedness that made up the main theme of the movie. I thought it was brilliantly complex.

sorry, but i didn't like her in that scene. She overreacted. It would be 10 times better if she was more straight and normal, but still crazy and depressed.
this was a great scene. But mixing prozac and dexedrine is no big deal. I have done it many times. Lots of doctors prescribe this combination. I have never had any pharmacist even question it. So that ruins the scene's authenticity for me. When I first saw this I didn't notice they were talking about prozac (hardly more effective than placebo- negatively or positively). It's not like painkillers plus sedatives or stimulants etc.
He wasnt questioning just those two drugs. It was those two plus, liquid morphine. liquid morphine is VERY dangerous. So, adding these two others drugs makes it wise to call someone to check if this is real. Many times pharmacist lose their jobs and/or go to prison because of overdoses.
Me encanta , Magnolia , pero mas aun esta escena .Les pido con subtitulos en español latino , Gracias , aunque me la se de memoria.

I like Julianne in some things but I think you people are overrating her acting here just because it's julianne moore and the film is Magnolia, so you want to kiss ass. It's AWFUL shitty acting in this scene.

sorry, but i didn't like her in that scene.

Many times pharmacist lose their jobs and/or go to prison because of overdoses.

you're right. thanks. I don't know how I missed the morphine bit the first time.

The close-up when she starts to get angry is very reminiscent of Altman.
MAGNOLIA is in my top 3 favorite films of all-time, right behind A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and E.T. . Pure genius.
