I've never very good at the game. I used to enjoy watching my Dad play. He wasn't much good either but at least with him you got see the spaceship on level 5.
speaking of the bloody music..depending on which version of the standup machine an arcade had..the music tones would be slightly different...both maddening as hell. for comparison, check the taito legends on PS2 to this one..they are different..the version put on legends is the same as the other version of the standup arcade game..
i remember a different version of phoenix where the screen was smaller no joystick replaced by left and right buttons and the opening tune was greensleves can anyone remember it and what was the second tune called after blowing up the mothership that was also different to this one
So great. Thanks for the memories. I was lucky enough to go to a college in 1980 that had a bar on campus that had this game. I have no idea how many hours and quarters I spent in the bar playing this game instead of going to class. Probably my favorite game from this classic period. Thanks again
Anybody remember "Demon Attack" for the Atari? That was the closest I got to having Phoenix in my home. Very difficult, but I eventually mastered the game (scored as high as it would allow).
I too played this in the early 80s in arcades in england.
Just got back from a trip to San Fran where I went to a 2 a "vintage" amusement museum and what should I find but this game......the wife thought it was fun at first but after an hour she got a bit pissed off and told me to stick to my playstation and that we had to go...............I wanna buy the original arcade and have it in my living room just to freak her out, i think the sounds alone would manage that!!!!
thank you for posting this. watching you play is better than me trying to fumble through one of the online flash emulators of this game.

This doesn't seem to be the arcade version based on the non-analog sound.

@KeredDrahcir I can relate with you on that. My father love this game, but sucked at it. So he watched me play it all the time.

Man I loved Phoenix when I was a kid. I had it on 2600 back then, and Demons to Diamonds as well. Both were cool.
When I decided I wanted a small arcade in my basement, this was on my must have list.
Nothing beats playing the real thing. My 15 year old nephew laughed for hours when I showed it to him. He couldn't believe we paid to play these.
Ahhh the generation gap.

This game was my all time favorite 80's video game next to Donkey Kong, a lot harder than galaga, and destroying that mother ship was so satisying!

I played this in the arcades, and I thought THEN that the way your ship ... wiggled was weird.
JAF1970 3 years ago
wow, i remeber playing this game in the 80's.
you could get a 5000 point bonus, taking out the mother ship late.
