So glad to hear this talk! The US is remarkably provincial in it's media outlook. It's horrible! I am american and I feel stranded on a delusional island most of the time. Our American arrogance is a giant problem and it's made worse instead of better by the media. We are not stupid, we are isolated and ignorant. As pathetic as it sounds it's true.
Also it's sort flexible and just intuitive, u can say stuff like "geek-o-meter" or add "ness" to the end of just about anything and even tho the words don't really exist u can just tell what they mean. I basicly learned english from watching movies and cartoons. I don't even think I even looked more than 10 words in the dictionary :P
I'm not an American/Brit/Canadian and I do believe people in the US tend to think they are the center of the Universe and it's really sad and ignorant.
BUT I have no problem with everyone(world wide) learning english and having english like a global language. I find quite easy to learn and more material on it than any other, and I'm pretty sure it's most common 2nd lang.
It would actually be cool if people just learned Esperanto. Then, every website could be in its native language and esperanto. It would make things simpler, cheaper and people wouldn't have to waste so much time translating stuff into so many different languages. I suggest Esperanto not only because its neutral (not a national language), but also because it has a logical grammar and can be learned in 6 months. Whereas national languages take many years. Nice idea. Great bridge language.
Talk about serendipity - got this referral from You Tube to edge me out of my flock based on my TED Talks subscription. Wonderful talk. People are my bridge. Happy to cross your path again.
@egokick hehe...I don't think that that was his point. Maybe you're not interested in Chinese but maybe you like the idea of Spanish or French or Italian, so, in theory you could translate stuff from enlish to french or vice a versa.
Basically he's saying people don't know much about people outside their country and the internet doesn't change that much.
Language is usually the main reason, but I don't think this is. entirely accurate I think some websites better connect people of different languages and nationalities like a site that focuses on art.
The thought must come first, the desire must arise first, the fear must be eliminated from the mind before any action would create meaningful manifestation of what is desired. I notice if there is no customers there is no market. There must be people who want this kind of information, else the information would not be of any use. Yah I heard it . . . SO? Yah I know . . . SO?
Its a fact that most people are interested in what happens closer to them than on the other side of the world. Its also a fact that the greatest barrier for true globalization is language.
Mormon missionaries are a great resource. They go places around the world that are radically different from where they are native. They also have done volunteer work for two years on their own tab. They have great language skills as well. I'm from Utah for example and I served in New Jersey among Spanish speaking Puerto Ricans as well as with Vietnamese. My Vietnamese name is Ahn Zhium. Later I served in Andra Pradesh, India speaking Telegu in the city of Begumbet, Hyderabad.
well, it's the same with friends. you avoid people who are too different from you. it's not good, because it restricts your interaction your horizon. it's good, because generally this leads to good friends with whom you can have fun.
Uhhh... of cooooouuuuursssseeee. Why is he the least bit surprised? To me this seems to be totally obvious. Start at 10min. It gets a little less obvious from there.
This phenomena is analogous to group think. I had noticed it myself a few years ago when I was moving back and forth from one country to another. Media in each country depicts news in a way that centers around its audience. News media are rarely objective in their representation of global events and thus fail to recognize the significance of events beyond their borders. The subversive power of group think shouldn't be underestimated. In politics, group think led to Iraq's WMD Assessment.
@tcorp True, for example: news about whale hunting is presented A LOT differently in Japan than in the west. It's really hard to discuss this subject with a Japanese, since most of them believe the west wants to force their food on them and take away their traditions.
@ShallowBeThyGames because the obescity epidemic is greatin a bunch of small cingularitues which will soon accumulate to one single black hole of human obescity and sink to the centre of earth?
@ShallowBeThyGames It was an honest mistake. When you look out at galaxies they all seem to be flying away in all directions. I'm sure anywhere in the Universe we would have made the same assumption. "Sorry bout that" on behalf of America. Our entertainment is good, our food is bad. Our science is good too. (these bastards have put accountants in charge of the food. Do any of you know how or where to get "real" food here in the states? )

That said, Global Voices is awesome and I've been reading it for years.
