I love any vids I can see of you painting. Thank you. If you were painting the music, then you would paint the same painting each time you heard a piece of music. I feel the music helps quiet the inner critique allowing the freedom to paint from your heart. It is all so beautiful and fun - thanks!
I hope one day i will have enough money to buy one of your amazing paintings..Or i will start painting again so maybe i will be able to express myself in a similar way..When i see some of your paintings i see my soul ..Thank you!
Love the work and would be interested in your feedback on my artwork if you get a second. Just google my name or click on it below. Good luck with it all.
Wow! I love the colours you use, the combinations - I think I understand your connection to the music in your work - you are painting the music. Colour and art and music are expressing themselves through you and you are expressing yourself through them. Your work is "the now" - I love it............
Tonight's the night. It's going to happen again and again. Has to happen. Nice night. Miami is a great town. I love the Cuban food and pork sandwhiches, my favorite. But I'm hungry for something different, now.
Jonas everybody talks about "abstract art" or "realism" or whatever. I put all art into one of two categories. It's either good or bad (to me). Good art moves me emotionally. It causes me to seriously think or feel something positive. I don't need anything to move me negatively because the bad news every day on TV provides plenty of that. Your paintings are happy and full of energy. And unlike most realism, your paintings won't become boring a few months after they're hung on the wall. Good job.
I'm thrilled by this way of painting and what I call the zen-approach of "wu-wei" or letting go of every benefit by just being the medium of something that comes out of Nothingness. You showed me the path, approach, ... I have to follow while painting. Thank you, Jonas.
the 1:58 picture and 3:08 and 3:51 it's upstanding...really awesome...i love that combination...it's so many expresion in it...it's make's you cry when you see that contrast...really awesome...i love your gift sir...your art are amazing...
My wife and I went to his gallery today and were fortunate to meet and spend time with Mr Gerard looking at his art and listening to his comments, We were blown away by the feelings inspired by his art. I had never felt anything at all before today when looking at abstract art. Looking at his overwhelms me.
If Buncombe County Government is so great then why are they keeping peg monies meant for URTV & thus making URTV public access TV shut down in September - pure government greed is why - I urge all local citizens to come to the public hearing on June 15th at 4:30pm at #30 Valley St. in downtown Asheville
Jonas' work is awesome! I saw him at a live demonstration yesterday, October 17, do 7 awesome paintings in just a little over two hours! Totally incredible! I've had several conversations with him, and believe me when I say that he is not gay. He LOVES women--I met his female partner yesterday. He's been married several times, he has a daughter. Also, I'm gay, he's not, who cares? His art is like energy united with color. The most awesome work I've ever seen, and I come from an art background.
Why does everyone keep asking him if he is gay.... ?? Does it matter? Is he a man, a woman or a bloody goldfish ~ it does not matter x Jonas you are brilliant and an inspiration to us all, thank you for sharing ~
LOL, yeah, he does have a very subtle feminine/gay movement about him. My guess is that he's the "wife" in a relationship.
And to IDoMyThing, no, using "flamboyant" colors(those were flamboyant colors?) doesn't indicate whether or not someone is a homosexual. His gay mannerisms do. Oh well, not a big deal if his door swings the other way.
I have never seen such feminine work come from a man. Interesting. His movements while working.......He is truly in touch with his feminine side and not afraid to show it, another BRAVO! for the gay community. Thank you Jonas Gerard.
The narrative IS there in abstract, and the function is to emote feelings, good or bad as in every style of art. It's ALL there for you to discover....perhaps not in an obvious way. But it is all there..speaking. Abstract speaks to whoever is listening, to whoever wants to hear.
Poxyjuice - I respect the way you feel about art. I might point out, though, that an artist determines what is art, not the viewer. Art is an extension of the creator, take it or leave it. The world should never box an artist in. The day the "world" tells the artist what they should or should create is the day all artists should lay down their brushes. There have been societies in Europe that told it's people what was and wasn't allowed in the arts. What a horrible way to live.
PART 2 OF COMMENT: I have the greatest respect for the more "literal" artists. Many of these artists works simply floor me. I can appreciate their extaordinary talent and do also enjoy viewing and feeling this type of art as well. However, my home has nothing but abstract art, because, as much as I can appreciate the talent of the other artists I feel true joy having abstract art around me. Art is expression, it's feeling, it's freedom.
Pymeohmy - your description of art is great. That is exactly how I feel about the different genres of art.
I'm an abstract artist. Can I draw? You betcha. But it doesn't excite me the way the blending of color and texture does. It took me a lifetime to allow myself to let go and just let the images on the canvas come to life. I never know what a painting will look like until it's done. Art, just like music, takes many forms and all are valid and useful.
PART 1 OF COMMENT...poxy, it's not necessary to "understand" art. All artists have their own perspective, abstract or otherwise. An abstract artist views things differently than someone as pragmatic as yourself. I have always loved abstract. I don't know why. I don't care why. I just know I enjoy looking at it, feeling it. I don't find the need to critque it. If I like it I like it, if I don't then I don't.
Jonas, Your work is great so this was a treat to see you actually painting. One day I am still hoping to get to the Smithsonian to see your historical perspecctive painting "We The People". K
The point I'm making is abstract art can be, in my humble opinion, good with context, or without. That it can be intentional (planned) and inspirational (unplanned). You however condemn the lack of context, the exporatory side of abstract. I don't. I favour discovery, and try to judge only the result, by itself. Composition, colour, contrast. And most important, does it trigger an emotional response in my head (emotional, not logical).
I agree. Partially :) I remember seeing Miro's Man Condemned to Death series and being absolutely unimpressed. However when I saw the name, and the idea behind the paintings, I realised that there is no better way of making a painting for that particular event. So context matters a lot. On the other hand, I remember seeing Kandinsky's compositions (VII especially), and being absolutely fascinated by them, without knowing anything about them.
I think we should not mistake the words of the artist for the art. Are we judging the paintings themselves, whether they are good or not, or are we criticizing the artist's speech? Are we looking at the end result or at the process it's used? And if we apply one criteria here, I wonder what results would be if we started criticizing the works of other great abstract geniuses, following the same criteria, such as Pollock or Kandinsky.
And in Jonas's art, why do you think it doesn't show who he is, trough his experience ? Is there not intent, purpose and statement though Jonas's art?
I agree it's extremely hard to evaluate abstract art. Which in my opionion, makes you try to avoid doing so, because for me and you and everybody else abstract art could be a scam/fraud or absolute brilliance, and there's nothing really solid to separate the two.
Your outlook on abstract art is quite interesting. I also paint abstracts and I can definitely say that because no subject matter is present there is no need to critique the art - much like Minimalism. Art is a language, but the language varies as the style varies (abstract expressionism, pointillism, realism, etc), at least that's how I see art. The best abstract art exercise is to turn on some non-lyrical music, take a piece of paper and a pen/pencil in your hand and start scribbling.
I like this discussion, and at the same time, I feel frustrated by the 500 letter limit in the comments you can have. In order to have a proper dialog, which I'd enjoy very much, on abstract art, and how each sees and feels about it, I'd like to continue on a forum somewhere, if anyone has a suggestion.
Why should we start from something existing to create vibrant, emotionional painting? Where is the difference between creativity and engineering? Art should be about spontaneity and you mention lack of learning, but I think that spontaneity is only at first, is the spark, then empirically the painter learns new technics and new methods, which lead him/her to methods to better express themselves.
I love the unique approach Jonas Gerard. Although I will never be as expressionistic as you, and although my art will never be as full as yours, I will keep going because you have motivated me. Thank you.
Jonas has been painting for 60 years, and has perfected many styles. This is just what he is doing now, and it is DEFINITELY NOT about perfection. Did you listen to him speaking in this video? Have a look at his websites and look at the different styles- He did portrait painting for 30 years for example. And btw, you could have 18 different art degrees, but they mean nothing when it comes to truly understanding what art is and stands for.
I cannot believe people would say your artwork is because of the music!?!?! That's like saying a gold medal athlete only won because of the crowds cheers! God people are petty. Your work is just amazing. And Stephen King writes his stories listening to AC/DC so the person that said the thing about your work being the music or what ever - is an idiot.

Seems a lot of people think he is gay. Because he uses flamboyant colours? What a stereotype, what a double standard.
Just because he seems free etc. To do whatever he wants and act however he wants doesn't make him feminine or gay.
Has he ever actually said that he was gay?
