Wow, what wonderful memories. This music takes me back to my childhood in Havana. My Havana, that enchanted city that i've never forgotten and hopefully one day will be able to go back to. My Havana, a city frozen in time in 1959 and partially destroyed by the terribe dictatorship nowadays.
Thank you so much for posting this great music. This reminds me of beautiful childhood memories running through the white sandy beaches in Cuba. Varadero beach being my favorite and where many of my birthdays were celebrated is the one that comes to mind.
This is truly a beautiful piece by Jose White, although Lecuona is noted as one of the artists who made it very popular. If you go on Google, you can find so many variations of this piece that it boggles the mind. I recently listened to a piece by Yalil Guerra that I thought was well done. But the most interesting piece I've seen on Google/Youtube was by Crowden school in CA. It's good to see the younger take this up. I give you the link but then I can't post. Just look it up.
The Cuban Rhapsody as refers Ignacio Cevantes is a "Pot-pourri of National Airs"... in this Rhapsody the first air is the habanera "Bella Cubana" of Jose White, the second one (3:00), the "Habanera tu" of Sanchez de Fuentes...
there's a mistake. Lecuona was a great composer but we have to make justice: this piece was composed by José White at the end of the XIX. The name of this wonderful piece is "la bella cubana", and it was originally played by a string quartet.

This is what the "real true Cuban music" was about. The composer, and piano player, Ernesto Lecuona, one of the genius of Cuban music from the late l880's to 1963.
Oh Dios mio..U have Lecuona in your youtube place?.my GrandMa that was born in Cuba used to talk 2 me about him and i did the same thing to my kids(my daughter hates my speech)so they know were we come from.also my GrandMa say that Carlos gardel was the best and she lived her life after him.this music is so great and it brings the Cuban in me.
Ernesto Lecuona was a famous Cuban composer. Malaguena is one of his beautiful compositions, aside from this one and many others~Beautiful~Thank you for posting~
Thank you SO, SO very much for the musical history lesson, I learned something new today. I am a piano player and never knew who he actually was; I love this music, it touches the soul. Please post more if you can and thank you again from one music lover to another!
Lecuona is the best coposer of piano music ever. I personally learned Granada, Gitanerias, and Malaguena. all very difficult, but worth the practice. word of caution, do not get sheet music arranged by someone else it isnt as good.
Ernesto Lecuona y Casado (August 6, 1895 Guanabacoa, Havana, Cuba - November 29, 1963 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) was a Cuban composer and pianist of Basque descent, and world-wide fame. He composed over six hundred pieces, mostly in the Cuban vein, and was a pianist of exceptional quality.
La Bella Cubana was composed by Jose White, from Matanzas. My wife was born in a small town in Matanzas. When we first met in Medical School, we would go to a small restaurant every Monday and drink coffee, while I had the Juke Box play this song.
Lecuona based himself upon all CUBAN folk songs, wish there are planty to shoce from. He was a master in composition and utilizing the same techniques as the Guajiros, in their tipical songs, utilizing cuban instrumets to give his songs the sence of nationalism they needed.
first I heard that tune in the movie "Godfather" and since then I was hopelessly searching for that thank you very very much for sharing this totally awesome!!!!

This piece is made up of LA BELLA
CUBANA and HABANERA,TU, a third piece which I don´t know the name.
These were not written by ERNESTO
LECUONA, but he united them into
a Cuban Rhapsody. People should not
assume that these were also by LECUONA.

The third "piece" is a collection of airs, some of them of Mexican inspiration (like the jarabe tapatío).
The orchestration, with castanets and a slow use of the claves, is not particularly Cuban. It sounds like the American popularization of Cuban music in the 50s.
tomistocles 2 years ago
Totally out of wack.
There is a CUBAN ZAPATEADO, nothing of Mexican Jarabe Tapatio.
The claves are veeery Cuban. Sure, castanets are typically Spanish, but Hey! Cuba WAS Spain for about 400 YEARS!
American popularization by Lecuona, go on keep making a fool of yourself.
There should be a rule in You Tube, If you are an ignorant on the subject DON"T COMMENT!
