  • I love Freni as Mimi, but her voice is way too light for this role and the tragic/romantic orchestration of the opera. This aria requires a heroic soprano, not a sweet soprano. Dimitrova's version is perfect.

  • the evolution of this great artist showed her patience for the voice to catch up to the ambition,the way it should be! She would have had to say no many times AND she survived Karajan for crying out loud!

  • I usually find Mirella Freni quite cold and unartistic, bue she is great in this aria, I agree. And I am amazed, her Russian is very good for an Italian. I can hear every word. Brava!

  • One of the most human , normal sopranos , without crazy dreams for being Turnadot or Lady Macbeth ! She did her best in all operatic roles she had to sing . Brava Mirella !!!

  • Comparing roles of Turandot and Lady Macbeth is a big mistake, because Lady Macbeth is far closer to Lisa than to Turandot...

    Both Turandot and Lady Macbeth require higher range (hear there appears only one high b. You're welcome to count how many high b-s there are in any of Lady Macbeth's arias or in Turandots) and stronger voice. Lady Macbeth is indeed "lighter" than Turandot, but is still closer to her than to Lisa.

  • Lady Macbeth and Lisa share the same low tessitura. Turandot can get away with less power in the lower and middle ranges, but Lisa and Lady Macbeth could essentially be sung by mezzos with good top notes (which is the case with LM all the time). the best recording of Lisa's act 3 aria is by a mezzo; Olga Borodina.

  • The role needs either a dramatic or a true lyric-spinto. I disagree that the roles of Lady MacBeth and Turandot are closest in tessitura to Lisa. I believe Tosca is a better analogy. Best performance I've seen of this aria was sung by Anna Tomowa-Sintow.

    Yes, I've heard her sing live at the Met Opera. She was singing Tatyana in "Eugene Onegin" and she was simply glorious. That role was much more suited to her voluptuous lyric sound than the "Pique Dame" heroine. Of course, tastes are very subjective...

    BTW, are you Italian? Your English is terrible. I'm not sure how you can say what I wrote is bullshit [sic] if you cannot even converse in my native language.

  • @petrina1022 I love anna but heard freni live in chicago all the stuff about her having a small voice is ridiculous.. she was just always carefull... i'm with von karjan, I would love to hear her voice sing tourandot... such grace in her upper register and never a wabble..
