@kriegpaolo He was rarely used at Parma in his last season, then he had an unsuccessful loan at Bologna, and a poor time at Fiorentina. It was even worse at Bolton. Retired at 29. He was good at the beginning of his career. I reckon his fame back home got too much for him. He was sorted for life from the start really after big bucks transfers and a lot of media footage of him. Big name in Japan he was.
@10stokesy Yeah, although most non Asians would forget him now...back then he was one of the inspirations, one of the very good Asian players who were good enough to play for a top club in a top European league.I guess he sorta gave hope to the Asians that u CAN be a superstar and have a future in football if u are really good.I mean I am Indonesian n although I've seen so many skilful youths, only very few chose a football career coz generally speaking it isnt a real prospective career here
i really have no recolection of Nakata playing at all, all i remember is he was in top trumps and a few nike adverts, having seen this i kinda wish i had a better memory
@Takablike He was a good player. Nothing amazing, very skillful and great technique, but he wasn't 'world class', He was quite a big figure for Asian football, a bit of a 'pin-up' so to speak. He was part of a VERY good Parma side in 2002. But it all went pretty down hill after that. He was 26/27 and his career started to slide. A bit of a flash in the pan. I remember him first playing for Perugia in Serie A, he was great to watch.
@10stokesy And he won Serie A with Roma, though I don't remember him being very pivotal for them in the winning season. I doubt he played much with the midfield and attack they had at that time!!!!!
He's not the first to ever do it (being Asian and playing in big leagues) but he's definitely the first to be applauded by everyone from around the world. He made Japan a more recognizable football team in the World Cup and making Japan advance in football since then. I can't praise him enough or thank him enough for that.
Japanese players, have such a grace when playing football, it's indescribable they kick the ball very differently, but it curves well enough to actually score and take out the keeper. Very impressive
@Bruno14108 ANY Japanese players are the best in Asia. Other Asian countries can't play football for shit. We should resign from Asia and make our own continent on the Pacific Ocean
The best japanese player
