Though the charges were temporarily dropped, Nashiri will likely remain in US custody for the rest of his life, and the nature of the dismissal stated that at any time proceedings may be resumed. The whole thing was done because of legitimate concerns with the effectiveness of military commissions which usually result in plea bargains and light sentencing. Oh, and the charges were reinstated in April 2011.

Desertion rates among draftees (from Vietnam-era statistics) were very high, which erodes both unit cohesiveness and morale. If I had to pick between a bloated army of draftees and a critically-undermanned army of volunteers, give me the volunteers any day!
And as for you discouraging people from enlisting in the armed forces, they should take your opinions with a grain of salt. Active Duty, Guard, and Reserves have done more for this nation in times of local and national crisis than your so-called "militias," and have maintained relative international stability for over 70 years. What civilian employment in the States designates a Unit Voting Representative, or encourages Absentee Ballot registration, or will actually e-mail reminders or updates about primary/general elections? The military believes in personal defense. This is a conservative principle. Repaeling DADT is destructive to the cohesion of the troops. If so, their would have been an investigation and at a minimum those soldiers would have been removed from the unit, but most likely booted out of the military. Not an Obama fan by any means, but the treatment of the Nashiri case here is deceptive. Though the charges were temporarily dropped, Nashiri will likely remain in US custody for the rest of his life, and the nature of the dismissal stated that at any time proceedings may be resumed. The whole thing was done because of legitimate concerns with the effectiveness of military commissions which usually result in plea bargains and light sentencing. Oh, and the charges were reinstated in April 2011.

The vid is deceptive because "dropped" is shorthand for "withdrawn with prejudice", a statement by the judge that the case was meritless and will not be pursued. Instead the charges were withdrawn without prejudice which allowed them to be later resumed.

It was she who ordered the charges dropped BEFORE BHO had signed his executive order forcing the DoD to suspend prosecutions pending review. I'm a Navy vet so I take this case VERY seriously. Desertion rates among draftees (from Vietnam-era statistics) were very high, which erodes both unit cohesiveness and morale. If I had to pick between a bloated army of draftees and a critically-undermanned army of volunteers, give me the volunteers any day!

What civilian employment in the States designates a Unit Voting Representative, or encourages Absentee Ballot registration, or will actually e-mail reminders or updates about primary/general elections? Probably the reason why so few ballots from Hawaii military personnel were counted is because leadership on the small unit level are notoriously unconcerned with getting absentee ballots in. We used to have a saying in the army around election time "We protect democracy even if we don't partake in it."

@notnolies I was in the military from 1985 until 1991. It is true that military personel are typically conservative. The military believes in national defense, this is a conservative principle. The military believes in personal defense. This is a conservative principle. Repaeling DADT is destructive to the cohesion of the troops. I know because I was harassed by homosexuals while in the Army, Why does Obama want a gay man to share a shower with me? Or let a gay man stand beside me at a urinal?

@intrepidorator If you were harassed did you report that homosexual individual? If so, their would have been an investigation and at a minimum those soldiers would have been removed from the unit, but most likely booted out of the military. Ironically the biggest sexual harassers of other men that I saw in the military were the guys who were the biggest homophobes and who loved to tease other soldiers about being faggots by pinching them on the ass, harassing them in the showers, etc...

@wigon I was 17 years old when I joined the Army. I don't know why your interested in whether I reported the harassment or not. It is irrelevent to the debate. Some men were kicked out of my unit for being caught having sex. DADT was a good solution to the problem, Gays could serve as long as they don't go around asking to suck the other men off.

@intrepidorator It has everything to do with this debate. If you didn't report the harassment that was entirely your fault. The problem would have ended right there if you done what you are supposed to. I've had homosexual soldiers in my units who were not a problem (aside from them getting picked on now and then). If you are secure in your sexuality who cares if they look as long as they don't touch. If they touch you, you beat the crap out of them and/or report them.

@wigon Who cares if they look?.. r u serious? Why not put women in with the men to shower then? as long as we don't touch the girls it is ok? C'mon, be serious. The only way to maintain cohesion in the unit is to avoid sexually uncomfortable situations. We can't have the men watching the women shower, and we can't have the gay men ogling the straight men in the shower.

The best female soldiers in my old unit were like our little sisters and if we had take showers together and if anyone would have tried harrassing them in the showers we would have all kicked their asses no question about it. There is also the issue of the gay men being the minority rather then vice-versa. Most realize they'd get the crap beat out of them and thrown out of the military if they tried anything like that.

@wigon I did respond to the harrassers and it is unfornunate that they paid so dearly for their indiscretion. But it does go to show that having gay men be allowed to share a shower or a restroom urinal is a bad idea. Those poor gay men. I believe that many more "training accidents" would occur if DADT is repealed and gays are allowed to openly serve.

@intrepidorator Secondly, I have to say that I am sorry about the trauma you experienced & I shouldn't make fun of that as sexual harrassment can indeed be a deeply disturbing experience especially when done by the same gender and it involves physical contact. I believe that you can still report this harassment if the individual/s are still in the military. Get some counceling and contact military legal assistance to see what can be done. All soldiers should stand against ANY sexual harrassment
