I don't think it's necessarily a joke just because it's a Katy Perry song. Stephin once said something to the effect that he enjoyed bubble gum, avant garde and nothing in between. Of course their performance is hilarious; Stephin Merritt plays wonderfully low-key against the melodrama in this song.

Stephin Merritt's idiosyncrasies never ceases to amaze. His, sort of, shy awkwardness, the way he fiddles with his ears, the way he always wears the same clothes all the time, the way he hides his face in his hats. I love him. He's my favourite singer and he's beyond cool!

I find it ironic that a lot of these Magnetic Fields fans would never get caught dead at a Katy Perry concert, but now that the MF's are covering a Katy Perry song, they giggle and laugh at how funny Perry's lyrics can be.

Well, the thing is most of the acts add humor to their performances, so I think the audiences for OUR HIT PARADE shows are sort of primed up for comedy with the music.
