Here is the fact: most (not all, MOST) Americans cannot or do not care enough to differentiate between Taiwan and China. I have Taiwanese friends who call themselves Chinese simply because it's less effort. To many Americans, Taiwan is simply a "part" of China, and therefore the Taiwanese and the Chinese are the same.
