I was hopelessly in love with Mel, even had photo's in my bedroom of her. I remember i was devastated when she died. Awesome to see this clip again tho. I forgot how young and full of live they looked.
The video portrays the girls as both anti-authority streetwise urchins but also high fashion, classy models. Perhaps we may even say there is a respectable/unrespectable duality happening here. The medium of change appears to be through an advertisement (for Florida holidays/orange juice?).
Childhood into adulthood, the loss of innocence via exposure to an aspirational life?
Change of image through marketing?
No matter what change in presentation money may enable, you can't deny your roots?
@CardSharksMan2009 No, if you watch the 2005 Kim Appleby interview on the Trisha Goddard show (uploaded to my channel), Kim explains that the hats came about because Mel's extensions went funny after she made the mistake of washing them. They didn't know what to do, so they wore hats to a record company function. Their manager liked the hats so much that it became their image.
Remembering, watching & listening to Mel & Kim always puts a smile on my face
I'll never forget the day Mel died - I was so young. Knowing an idol of mine had died really affected me. Their music, even to this day, continues to inspire & lighten my life & mind.
I still collect their memorabilia & it's almost like stepping back in time. Time steals so many magic moments but they are captured forever within memories.
@MrBlackFabio She was diagnosed with cancer of the spine in 1987 but the truth was denied by saying she had a back injury after a promo trip to Japan in 87. Following the release of 'That's The Way It is' the news was announced that she had cancer of the spine and she'd even discharged herself from hospital to record the vocals for the song.....
@MrBlackFabio ....Work on the second album was cancelled due to her ill health. Mel's ex boyfriend sold photos of Mel having chemo and a big legal battle to stop the pics came into play. Sadly, she died of pneumonia on 18 January 1990, after contracting a cold; her immune system weakened by chemotherapy. She was just 23 years old. I'll never forget how much I cried when she died. :o(
Mel had a rare form of cancer, paraganglioma, that originated in her liver. She had surgery to remove it when she was 19, just under a year before Mel & Kim's first release with 'Showing Out'. Mel fell ill again in mid 1987 when the cancer returned to her spine. She died of pneumonia on January 18th, 1990 after contracting a cold. Her immune system was too weak to fight it off after chemotherapy treatment.
I must admit, the natural jiggling breasts are quite refreshing, as dirty as that sounds...lol.

Their dance moves looked so coordinated and natural, it seems they don't even need a chereographer.
RIP Mel..............

@losttribe Agreed. They choreographed the 'Showing Out' video dance themselves.

Mel's cancer, is that one of the reasons why Mel and her partner, Kim, wore hats in their videos?
