I have seen vids of donkeys fighting mountain cats and winning. Horses defend themselves but usually don't defend other animals. They both can take care of themselves. The dogs, who have the sense to pick out the easiest kill, went after the llamas because a kick to the head from a llama wouldn't kill them like a kick to the head from a horse or donkey would.

The dog wouldn't know specifically about the kick, it would know that the horse and mules were stronger. Science still can't explain how animals sense danger or advantage in other animals. It might be some passed down instinct eg. how does a bear know that the much smaller cougar is the last animal that it wants to tangle with?
The horse is the most dominant of the prey, here, which offers safety all it's own. Then again, it may just be as stupid as you've said.

What makes this scene especially shocking is that many of these are herding breeds - Old English sheepdog, Australian shepherd, Bouvier, etc. But even dogs with the kill instinct genetically suppressed can find it again under extreme circumstances. We rescued 35 puppies from a situation like this.

Technically, the elimination of the owner would prevent any more animals from being neglected and returning to their feral state, hence, it's a viable solution to the problem.
While the owner can be charged for what has happened with these specific animals, we have no laws in North America to prevent people from owning animals. The owner pays the fine, buys a new clutch of llamas and more dogs to neglect and the problem continues.

It would be likely that once the dogs killed those llamas, that would be it. Eventually, the dogs would die, eliminating the threat to the llamas should there be more, unless the owner gets more dogs as well, and I doubt anyone living in such poor conditions would have the money to replenish all of their livestock. I don't deny, however, his death is an option.

I only have to look at an animal's liver to know that it died from consuming antifreeze.

No, that's not what I'm saying. You asked why the horse was just standing there. The horse was just standing there because even as a single unit it still has the herd mentality which overrides it's sense to run.
The dogs, who have the sense to pick out the easiest kill, went after the llamas because a kick to the head from a llama wouldn't kill them like a kick to the head from a horse or donkey would.

The dog wouldn't know specifically about the kick, it would know that the horse and mules were stronger. Science still can't explain how animals sense danger or advantage in other animals. It might be some passed down instinct eg. how does a bear know that the much smaller cougar is the last animal that it wants to tangle with?
The horse is the most dominant of the prey, here, which offers safety all it's own. Then again, it may just be as stupid as you've said.

What makes this scene especially shocking is that many of these are herding breeds - Old English sheepdog, Australian shepherd, Bouvier, etc. But even dogs with the kill instinct genetically suppressed can find it again under extreme circumstances. We rescued 35 puppies from a situation like this.

I would of been throwing shit at the dogs, screaming, anything to divert their attention. I understand getting in the pen would of caused a human harm with the pack of dogs all riled up but If I had fire crackers I would of been scaring the dogs out of there. You can't scare off an animal that isn't afraid of you, mommy. You may be able to throw a rok and scare off one dog, but a group of dogs that have gone feral and are on the feed aren't going to be scared away by their "best friend".
Had I been there I would have, at the very least, shot the llama being eaten alive to put it out of it's misery, but that wouldn't have detered the dogs from feeding on it.

The guy said he called the authorities. they CLEARLY aren't his animals as evidenced by his comments. whats he supposed to do go walking into a pen full of dogs whose bloodlust is up from having killed the llamas and try to shoo them away? As far as shooting them, well shooting your nieghboor's dogs when they are on their own property would seem to open the cameraman up to prosecution. as awful as it is to watch the guy probably did the only thing he could do at the time - try and document it.

Technically, the elimination of the owner would prevent any more animals from being neglected and returning to their feral state, hence, it's a viable solution to the problem.
While the owner can be charged for what has happened with these specific animals, we have no laws in North America to prevent people from owning animals. The owner pays the fine, buys a new clutch of llamas and more dogs to neglect and the problem continues.

@thegirl44 But for what purpose would the owner purchase new llamas if they do not care whether the ones he already had live or die? It would be likely that once the dogs killed those llamas, that would be it. Eventually, the dogs would die, eliminating the threat to the llamas should there be more, unless the owner gets more dogs as well, and I doubt anyone living in such poor conditions would have the money to replenish all of their livestock. I don't deny, however, his death is an option.

Laws regarding pet and cattle ownership leave the option open, whether it is economically viable for the owner, or not, is irrelevant.
I doubt that the city even removed the surviving animals in this situation, as horrible as that sounds.
It'll be a long time coming before we properly regulate owners, until then, I don't see their removal as an unreasonable option.

Yeah he did do something, he called the police, he can't be expected to just jump in there to break it up risking his own life and be attacked by a pack of blood thirsty dogs. He's doing the right thing by capturing the evidence so that it can be used in court to prosecute the owners.
