....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Chase was the jimi hendrix of trumpet....I had the honor at age 13 to go to a music camp in n.carolina with him as a prof. and play in his student band...could't believe he was taken in the plane crash not long after, always wondered what vibes would come forth had he lived.....a legend
Absolutely not the greatest technical player. He might be the best at high notes. Do you think clifford brown got his recognition with a five year recording span for no reason? Up until about a year ago i could still find a clifford brown c.d, in a barnes and nobles, yet in all my years i have never even seen a bill chase c.d., period. Music taste is one thing, high notes another, but technically clifford, freddie hubbard, and w. marsalis smash this guy.
Like many of the people who have responded to this blog, I too, was a trumpet player from third grade through college and beyond. For what my lowly opinion is worth, I consider Bill Chase one of, if not THE best trumpet player I've ever heard. It's a tragedy that he and his band were lost. I play his recordings wondering what might have been had they still been alive today. My hat is off to all of them in rememberance and gratitude for some of the most spectacular music ever played.
Unlike most jazz fusion bands or brass ensembles, Chase was 100% trumpets and rhythm section -- no sax, no bones. The only other power horn group that came close was Tower Of Power (comprised of mostly session musicians), but it was mixed. Also, few groups were technically brilliant than Chase. It was like having a half dozen Maynards playing together.
I literally wore out my Chase album (1971) playing this track over and over and attempting to mimic Bill Chase when I was a lowly 2nd chair in high school. Sadly, my chops never ever got anywhere close to good enough for this :(
Thanks for posting this. Being a long time time fan of Maynard Ferguson, I hadn't ever heard Bill Chase's playing. heard OF him, but not actually Heard him. I am blown away....I was around in jazz clubs in the seventies, back when you didn't have to be 21 to get in (or quench your thirst...)
No, man, I think we heard right the first time- your band has five members- now six. (More LOL...) Chase was one of my idols when I was playing in 1973 and onward. Along with Herb Alpert, Maynard Ferguson, Louis Armstrong, Chuck Mangione...
@ArtsPatron2008 Didn't we go to different schools together? LOL... Guys like Miles, Alpert, Nat Adderly and Armstrong were more stylists than anything. I'd also include Freddie Hubbard and Mangione but they chiefly played fluglehorn, not trumpet. But when it comes to technical mastery of the trumpet you can't beat Bill Chase, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen or Don Ellis.
I believe the trumpet echo song asked about is off the self titled album "Chase" (the first). I believe the name of the song is "The River", but my LP's are pretty much all in storage so I can't check it out for certain.
wow! i have not heard this song in years! i heard these guys live twice around '70-'71... when i live in chicago. i was only about 20 years old then and they were great! Bill Chase was a trumpet superman. thanx for posting...
I can't believe I found this. Only on a whim. I am 50 and they were right in the middle of my era being a band member as well. So many great memories. John

Bill Chase is my favorite trumpet player. Imagine what he could have done if he didn't die in that horrible plane crash.

@VidBrats I swear you have to be born with the right kind of lips. It's like guitar, it helps to have the right kind of finger tips.

Check out the bass player - he kills. Not sure who it is - Angel South?
luridplanet 2 years ago
The two times I saw him before the crash, the bass player was Dartanuan (sp) Brown.

Bill Chase was the best trumpet player in the world.
He had no competition.
Unfortunately the band died in an airplane crash.

I wish our trumpets in marching band would sound like that this year. We are only going to have 5. Two sophomores, 2 freshman, and 1 8th grader.

5 man marching band? That's crazy
BlackMahmba 2 years ago
No 5 trumpets lol. But 1 more showed up this year so now we have 6 trumpets. I'm still not too happy with our instrumentation in low brass.

Someone put the very same song on Youtube! It's called "Invitations to a River" and the section with the echo is the "movement" Reflections.
