being a merlin aircraft engineering technician i can say that checking of tell tale locking wire on all emergency escape doors is part of after flight servicing but not part of before flight servicing. the door that came away was the escape door within the cargo door. the escape handle was probably left open by some member of the public during the static display. bloody civvies touching things they have no idea about, bloody civvies!!

@mikekayaksfast Yes. We check everything on the aircraft, and make sure that every door hatch catch IS latched AND locked with the key. Heli vibrations can do all sorts of things, including opening doors, even though door latch systems are hooked as 'fail-safe'. Most parts of the helicopters are secured, even the belly panels by hook latch systems AND steel wire with clasps.

Thankfully none of our machines have ever lost anything, although we only use AS350/355's and Jet Ranger III's.

@nathanshox well yeah you cant really blame the army since it was an RAF helicopter, but nevertheless it was a very foolish mistake the doors on the Merlin weigh very heavy and easily could have killed someone.

What have the Army got to do with this? This is a Merlin, a Royal Air Force helicopter. The Army only operate Apache, gazelle and lynx. RAF operate Merlin, Chinook and Puma. I know the newspapers get it wrong, even though its written on the side, but i would have thought people into air shows would know that the Army can't be trusted with a helicopter this size.

OgsLike, you can't see it clearly on this clip, but I have a clip where I'm zoomed in right on the pilots and the door ( that I think that came off), the handle was half way down. I'm in the middle of cutting a video of most of the footage I shot at the air show and I'm going to include that bit in it.

Thanks. I've received pictures of the egress hatch confirming the half pulled position of the Jettison handle. The official Air Accident Investigation has initially stated that the accident was caused by mischeif rather than premeditated intent by a member of the public. Its a sorry, sad but true fact that Irish Audiences cannot be trusted with being in "Touching" distance of displays.

I agree in some sense but I think the person who obviously did it was a particular type of person from our society...ie a scumbag/tracksuit knacker/trouble maker. I know if I accidentally pulled a lever that I shouldn't have I would have told a pilot or uniformed official. I fear its the end of static displays in the Galway Air Show. Hopefully not though.

It wont be the end of static displays but it will come to them being for photos only as in every other show I've been to (US and Europe). THe usual practice is to have the aircaft parked with a rope perimeter of wing or rotor diameter. THis is the boundry that the public cannot cross. Aircraft are there for photos and viewing, not swinging of aerials, or pushing buttons in the cockpit

How high off the ground is that lever? Could a child have pulled it? Says a lot about you that you say it was obviously a knacker or trouble maker. Most adults would have mentioned hitting a lever. A kid though? In the end, the crew should have checked all doors prior to take off, just like they do on civilian flights, cos some civilians touch stuff they shouldn't.
