This guy taught Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers when he was in High School in L.A. Flea learned to play the trumpet at Fairfax High School. Flea graduated in 1980 and went on to start one of the best bands ever with Anthony Kiedis! They are the Chili Peppers.
I too played with JPO in the early 80's. I have on video the Battle of the Batons and many more.. I'm going to have to figure out how to transfer them!
Do you have 1982? I believe Donna Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond), Helen Reddy, Marty Ingalls were among the guest conductors. I was in the trumpet section - I would love to see that!
I played the violin in the Jr. Philharmonic from 1981 to 1983. It was truly a blessed experience for me. I went to Fairfax High School and we had music everyday. In the Jr. Phil you felt a sense of belonging and you really wanted to play your best and not waste Dr. Katz's time. He had very good sense of humor and he was such a professional, loving and giving man. If anyone can find a video of the JPO from 1981-1983 and post it that would be very nice.
I recorded one of the entire concerts from that time frame. I will try to find it and post it. My brother played 2nd or 3rd chair 1st violin for many years in the 60's and thereafter as an alumnus. His name was Sandy.
Its great to see a teacher who is truely appreciated by his students. More teachers should be recognised for going that extra mile to help to broaden the minds of the young. There are 1000s who do this but will never know the effect they have on lives through the years. Next time you see your teacher, say thank you for bringing knowledge into your life.
thanks for posting this... i had never heard of Dr. Katz before You tube. God Bless him and all music teachers that go the extra mile for their students:)

I also played from 1983-1985 in the Jr. Philharmonic. It has been one of the most enriching experiences in my life. Thank you Dr. Katz.
