  • @3rflyingcom hey i got a riding mower n something is messed up with the silonid, any way i put a battery in it and it fired then died after a while i looked over n the key was switched off so now it wont start. Do u know if i might have screwed something up? plz respond thanks.:)

  • @multikyd01 It was running the whole time with the key off? Or did it stop running when the key was moved to the off position? If its the latter of the two its an easy fix. If its the former then its hard to say..you'll have to test for spark and go from there.

  • I found a Craftsman Model 917.376562 self propelled lawnmover out for trash and when I got it home and tried to start it it just did nothing. I drained the stale gas and when I whent to start it, I had the surprise of my day - It kicked back and pulled the puller out of my hands! Ah... The problem! Now my question is how do you keep the flywheel nut from unscrewing the blade nut while it is chocked in this lawnmower??

  • the key refers to a rectangular woodruff key which fits vertically. 1/2 in the shaft recess and the other half sits in the slot in the flywheel, aligning the two. In this instance, the key has broken as a safety feature to protect the motor. Buy a new key. It looks like a small rectangular piece of metal.

  • Does anyone know of a better video which shows more detail. I still don't know what the key is or where it goes. It's a video about replacing a key which doesn't show the key being replaced or old key removed.

    I still dont' understand the concept of the key. Doesn't that bolt in the cetnre go all the way down to the blades. Isn't that the shaft, and that/s bolted to the flywheel?

    So how do keys help it?

    btw is KEY an american term, and the rest of the world would use PIN?

    The Key stops the flywheel (things with fins) from rotating on the shaft that goes through the middle of the flywheel. The large bolt on the top of the shaft holds the flywheel down on the shaft. You can only access the key by removing the flywheel.

    If the key is damaged by blade strike (on a rock for example) The flywheel can rotate a few degrees on the shaft and this will change engine timing causing the engine to backfire, not start or yank rope from hands when starting.

  • @eveningniteshade A pin could be round These are rectangle and you can see it in the still I took I do use a screw driver to drive the rectangle key out of the shaft slot. This key was split in half. they are soft

  • no...If it doesn't look bent, dented or cracked then its fine to use it again.

  • Yes they all have somekind of locking mechanism. Some Victas have a Flat section.

  • You need to replace the fly wheel key as it has moved and timing is off Only use flywheel removal method on B and S engines others need to be puled from the center not from edge

  • scrape the old one out of the pocket once you have the flywheel off. Put the new one in the pocket and slide the flywheel down over it so the key fits into the groove that is located inside the center hole of the flywheel.

  • block the mower blade by placing a C clamp on the deck lip or use a piece of wood and jam the blade that way.

  • yes the water will hurt something, you just set the dipstick tube back in there losely with it being loose, when you used the pressure washer water could of gottenin the oil!!!!

  • My lawn mower is a Snapper with a Briggs & Stratton engine. This video saved me from bending over for $80. I only had to bend over for 32 cents because the guy who owns the Snapper dealership didn't want to make change for a $20 and I only had 32 cents change. Great video. Many thanks!

  • I have a briggs and stratton lawn mower. It couldn't be started. I cleaned carburetor and replaced the new spark plug. The mower still couldn't be started. When I pull cord, there was no spark and flywheel was loose. It seems that flywheel didn't engage into the magneto to trigger the ingition coil to function. So where should the problem be? Thanks.

  • Start by taking it apart like in the video. Nut that hold flywheel is loose or the crank is broken

    I noticed you placed the flywheel onto it first, then did you drive the key into the slot with a hammer and a punch tool?

  • if its a rectangular key it should just slide in with every little effort after the flywheel is on.

    If its a half circle "D" shaped key the key must be installed first and held in place with left hand as other hand slides flywheel down onto shaft over key.

  • I bought a mint condision 1970's kawasaki 100 dirtbkie(2 stroke) that ive tried everything but this to get it to start it's got lots of spark but will not start even under the most extream situations jump start, tow behind wheeler quick start, ive put a brand new piston and rings and almost gave up on it untill now. if this is the problem i swear to god i will mail you 20 bucks.

  • Yes its worth checking but I think maybe the problem is still compression or fuel. The bore maybe scored and not sealing against the rings. Try a compression test you should get 125-150+ PSI

    After attempting to start it have you verified fuel charge in combustion chamber? Remove the spark plug is it wet with fuel? On the carb check float and inlet needle and jets. Sometimes a jet passage will plug up. A small wire works well to clear them

  • Ya it's getting fuel ive cleaned every piece to the carb like 4 times new gaskets and had the cylinder honed but your not the first persone that said it was a compression problem but ive started my old blaster with a piston and rings that were compleatly shot it didnt run good but at least it started but i cant get anything but a back fire every 1 in 1000 times of kicking it over. i have no compression tester so i really don't know. The bike is at my mothers ill be there for christmas.

  • well 2 cycles like most engine require only 4 things to run. Fuel, Spark, air, compression. Of course they must be in the right amounts and at the right time.

    I don't know of any way to test timing other that to see if the key way on the fly wheel is inline with the key way on the crankshaft. At this point you should pull the flywheel and check the key. If the key is even dented or partly sheared that would be the problem child right there.

  • Good video which I used as a guide to replace the flywheel key. In addidtion, I also replaced the air filter, spark pplug, and cleaned out the carb. Still I cannot get it to start. The original problem was that I ran over a rock and it did shear the key. Wondering if anyone has any further advice they can offer me on what else I can try.

  • this is a hard one to figure out with out seeing the machine. Did you squirt a little gas in the carb to see if it would pop?

    are you sure you have spark?

  • Is the blade bent? if not pull the cap off the sparkplug & rotate the blade if it does not stay straight when you turn the blade you bent the shaft & its an expensive repair

  • This is a pretty bad video. You don't show any of the detail work, like how to get the flywheel key in, etc. Also, the sound keeps drowning out your voice completely. I didn't find this video very helpful.

  • when he said that putting a board underneath helps to take and put the nut on above the flywheel, you wouldnt need that if you had a flywheel holder, i have 2 of them and they sure help.

  • not very many people have access to the flywheel puller or holder but they most likely have some wood planks laying around or even a limb off a tree. This was done for the do-it your-self person using tools they have around the house. The main difference is the air tool that I used.

  • im sorry but i have to say this, why the need for an air wrench? it would be just as easy to use a normal socket set with a ratchet, and if you use the air wrench while tightening down the bolts you could strip them, then you are stuck with a stripped out block or shroud.

    That is a 1/4 inch air ratchet. Very hard to strip anything. Plus I alway go back and hand tighten. to make sure. The air ratchet take 30 minuets off of this. I charge 60.00 per hour so for 30.00 I will use all hand tools yours, if you want me to. Just trying to save you some money.

  • I bought a flywheel puller just for those briggs&stratton flywheels. Other wise those things are really hard for me to remove. Great job by the way!!!

  • ok, not to be harsh, but that was a waste of money, yes it does make it easier, but you can use a thick screw driver and just put it underneath the flywheel, being careful not to pinch anything, or put the screwdriver on any surface that is weak and give it a quick nudge downward on the handle in multiple spots, it should just pop right off.

  • I have a mower like this one (but slightly older), that I have been trying to fix. So far, the only way it will turn on is if I pour a little gas directly into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, and then it will remain on for only a few seconds. What could be the problem?

  • Sounds like a carb issue. it may need to have the jets cleaned out because they are restricted by some type of dirt.

  • ok if your lawn mower has been sitting for awhile, then it is bad gas, which gums up the carb, if it hasn't been then it is bad compression, bad spark plug, or leaky intake manifold gasket.

    But if done right on a B&S it will

  • you are NEVER supposed to hit a flywheel with a hammer or any hardened striking implement, use a flywheel puller!

  • yes correct never hit a flywheel with a hammer you could break the ears off it, and another thing never hit the top of the crankshaft with a hammer you could flatten out the top or bend the crankshaft, which makes it impossible most of the time to put the nut back on, unless of course you have a tap-and-die set

  • and even worse than that is you can put hairline cracks in the cast iron or aluminum and when a flywheel blows at 3600rpm, well lets just say it can do some SERIOUS damage
