The props were salvaged in the early 1950's by the RN.There were plans to salvage the ship but public opposition and concerns about the amount of unexploded ordinance stopped this. The ships bell is now part of a memorial.
please dont talk about her unles you new somebody that was on her when she went down/my grandad was on her/ he survived but a lot of his ship mates did not/and he sufferd over the loss of his mates until he died at the age of 55 years old
one of the best things inhave seen of the royal oak my grandad was on her when she went down he servived but a lot of his ship mates did not so rest in peace to all of them
So where are the propellors (given that diving on this wreck is forbidden). My assumption is that before it was designated as a war grave, the MOD swiped them ?
Also, what value have these (impressive sounding) anti-torpedo bulges etc when only 3 torpedos sunk such a mighty vessel
@clubsport911 Dude she was an old lady when she was sunk..I think she was built in 1915...built like a brick shithouse yeah, but she was still tired out.
@prudenceislandboy Yes. Very old and vulnerable. The Oak had returned from a hunt on the Atlantic when it had become obvious it could not keep up with modern ships. What else could Britain do but fight with what we had, much of which was obsolete. An awful loss.
It was fairly obviously done with a vessel mounted multibeam (in very good weather!). Not sure what software they used, its just points, no model. Very nice.
Very interesting! I saw her with my own eyes just a few weeks ago, we were over her in a small boat and drifted down about half her length, the water was crystal clear. Could make her out clearly, even the hole in her bow. It was a moving and eerie experience.
@Paraffinmeister - Wow! Do you know why it is that there are no dive videos of the wreck? It would seem that she would be a Principal Attraction at that shallow depth. Is the visibility bad there, or are the currents nasty?
@Paraffinmeister - That's understandable, since many divers seem incapable of not touching cool things within reach. Did they ever do an underwater survey of the wreck (as was done for the USS Arizona)?
@vv55sst That and it's a mark of respect for the 833 men who died on her.
The navy do keep an eye on her and survey her regularly to check her condition though since she still has a large ammount of fuel oil and un-exploded ordenance on board.
@Paraffinmeister - its good that they do so. After this amount of time, the munitions are probably pretty well inert, but the oil might start leaking. I've been on the USS Arizona Memorial and the battleship still leaks oil to this day.
My Great Uncle George.T.Darnell went down with the Royal Oak only a boy of 18. May all the sailors rest in piece and pray they never try raise the Royal Oak and disturb all those brave young sailors souls. RIP Uncle x
What gets me is how few torpedoes it took to sink HMS Royal Oak aswell as other dreadnoughts like the USS Oklahoma and the USS West Virginia. For all the armor these behemouths had they sure had the glass-jaw syndrome. The USS Arizone took a single 1400lb bomb fore which crashed through several decks and a few seconds later 11000 men were dead in a horrible conflagration. HMS Hood suffered an even worse fate from a high velocity shell.
she was at jutland 1916...too bad as a war grave she can't be raised as a museum? wicked high tech!...(that means 3d sonar can hunt for argie type-209/1700 submarines off falklands!)
great sonar system! how long does it take to make all the "pings" to get this high detailed image? or how many days were you / the guy who made it on sea for this?

Were the scan taken from an ROV fitted with 8125 or was it towed? Also I was curious as to the software that was used to generate the model.

What is the depth to the wreck?
vv55sst 1 year ago
@vv55sst She's just below the surface, at low tide I' recon that her bilge keel (the highest point on the wreck) is no more than 8 feet down.

@Paraffinmeister - That makes sense for the interior. Does that apply to the exterior of the ship also?

@vv55sst Yep. She's a complete no-go narea for divers.
