What I do is I let the clutch out a little while feathering the gas. It is a delicate maneuver, but once you do it the first time it's like riding a bike. You never forget.

I learned to drive a stick at 10. Got a 1986 rusted up 2wd toyota pickup with a 5 speed, and slipping clutch for christmas from my dad. I drove that thing all over the farm! Where the clutch slipped a little, it was perfect for learning, cuz it wouldnt stall, then on my 11th birthday, i bought a 1980 mercury monarch 4spd with my bday money. Good childhood ^.^

And then because it's easier to teach someone to drive when they don't need to worry about shifting, almost everyone is taught in an auto.

Now that people start worrying about mpgs, manuals are starting to become a bit more popular. There's still hope for us ;)

Most cars these days (especially the little FWD four-bangers we have today) have very smooth clutches that don't require much effort on the pedal at all. I've owned four Mustangs that have all been manual; the only vehicle I own that is an auto is my '96 F-150. I'll tolerate an auto in the truck, but any car I own has to be a manual. They make more power and get better gas mileage than autos anyway.
