I wonder how I missed this. I was in San Francisco then. About this time I went to Oakland to hear Tozzi in a recital. He sang this scene and was very good until he ran out of gas and started going flat.
BTW I believe that Hines no longer holds the record at the Met but Plishka. Chevanovsky of course sang more often in baritone comprimario parts. Almost all Met basses start off singing secondary roles like the King in Aida and later moved to Ramfis. Hines moved up a little faster Plishka.
