It's like they gave the notes to some guy and told him to make an elevator-muzak version of the soundtrack. Flute/pan pipe does not make for tense music.
The cold 'electronicness' of the music in the Sega version is half of what made it so scary in the first place.
Some of the changed art is sweet though, Lisa looked pretty scary.

MSX was only in Japan & Europe. You're thinking of the fan translation. As to why they didn't make any other versions in english, it probably has something to do with the poor sales of the Sega CD version. As for why the less coolness...No clue to be honest. been seen by Konami as a few extra bucks to be made after the Policenauts release. They did seem to put SOME effort into it, but not a lot. (CG cutscenes didn't need to be done, but were. They also enhanced the graphics a bit.)
The days of Japan's games having no censorship are no more (or at least less common), as CERO, Japan's equivalent to ESRB, is really strict about violence. Mostly decapitation and other dismemberment. One example is Resident Evil 4. The chainsaw dude will still run the saw in your neck, but rather than have it fly off, it stays on but Leon still bleeds? And let's not forget No More Heroes, where only the US got the bloody version. JP and EU versions are summed up in one word: Ashes.
@deadshot145 If it's given an adults-only rating (or the equivalent) most stores will refuse to carry any copies. Need I remind you of how Manhunt 2 was nearly banned and "the hot coffee incident" of GTA San Andreas?

@Pokpal178 After a bit of research I got actual names. zunzunmatsuo has the opening, zzpsddi Has it on hardware along with a shot of the box (webcam quality), lolz146 has some music, AFX6502 has a nice selection of scenes.

The playstation version is so shitty comparing to the pc-engine/megadrive, everything is censored plus the music are awful.
I recommend to play the msx version too.
