when this episode first aired on toonami, i couldn't have been older than 8 or 9. The shows I was watching at the time all had characters that you knew would be in the next one, or would come back to life miraculously. Having to come to grips with the fact that one of the main characters could die and never come back was profound to me when I was a kid, that this episode is followed by bursting point really did things to me.

Learning the merits of mortality at an early age. I recommend it.

After Roy died, they would've had to cut a lot of footage from the show to edit that part out... it just wouldn't have made any sense. For instance, questions would've arisen surrounding Ricks mysterious sudden possession of the skull-1 veritech/valkyrie...

Oh, there are ways they could have covered up the deaths if they'd wanted to: claiming that the aircaft and mecha whose pilots we don't see and that get destroyed are just robots, claiming that the spaceships that get destroyed were evacuated, claiming that characters who get shot dead onscreen were just stunned, etc. With Roy, they could have said he was sent away to recover from his injuries and then never mentioned him again. VOLTRON did that all the time--but not ROBOTECH.

Roy was one seriously tough badass to shrug off three bullet wounds in the back and act like everything was normal, even though he knew he didn't have much time left. Seems a little strange that none of the deck crew noticed his injuries when he exited the Veritek, and only the bullet holes in the seat afterward, though. He kept his promise to Claudia. The tough bastard kept his promise to the end, even though it killed him.

This is the newer version where they've replaced most or all of the original great sound effects for supposedly higher fidelity but crappier sound effects. I'll take the 80's sound over this anyday. On the positive side its kinda cool that you can get whole episodes of Robotech now on youtube.
