What really makes an horror games less horror are the weapons.

If you are helpless, without any weapon a game gets scary.

That is the thing about Amnesia for example. I personally think Dead Space is not a bit scary because I'm focusing on the shooting, but if you can't focus on that you're are focusing on everything, to be ready to run for your life.You know if something is coming on you you cant do anything but run. If you got a weapon you think "I just shoot it in the head". That's it.

Survival horror is Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, early Resident Evils, Clock Tower, and Siren. Left 4 Dead is an action horror, and still a great game.

If my 12 year old coisen can play dead space without being scared, it's not scary. They could have used DARKNESS way better, the whole creppy see an enemy in a distance running, the necromorphs being RIGHT Behind you, being right behind things like doors. I personally feel as though the game could have made you jump better. A soon as a nercomorph spawned, music played and you immdiatly knew. It was just an all around easy game.

I don't find Dead Space original. the weapons were brilliant, story line wasn't, survival aspect was dire, I like replay value, it just didn't have that at all, was too short and repetitive. All the hype was unnecessary. I suppose it had big sales because of it's graphic novel and DVD sales. I loved the idea of DS, it reminded me of 'The Thing' but in space.

Dead space is a great game. Let me first say that.

However, Its not survival horror in the slightest. Its a first person shooter as much as call of duty zombies is. Sure you may get caught off guard and jump as something pops out at you, but a horror game doesn't need that. If its done right, you should be shitting your pants in fear even when there is nothing physically there at the time.

It was a great game, but survival horror is Penumbra, Silent hill, Resident evil (the first ones) ect

Personally I wouldn't throw the later Resident Evil's into a survival horror either. Its the Horror aspect that I'm saying isn't there. Maybe its just me but after about half way though dead space or the later resident evils you become "Numb" to the fear because monsters have been being constantly thrown at you in huge waves no longer making them "scary". I just personally think of Penumbra, Amnesia, Fatal Frame, the earlier REs, ect. when I think "Horror". But it is an opinion.

You have a pretty good list here; I would recommend trying Eternal Darkness for the Nintendo Gamecube. At first its really scary with the sanity meter concept, then you get used to it and its not as scary but it still has great puzzles and gameplay, and pretty well thought out storyline.
