l would like to dedicate this song to the people of Norway,in some small way,to offer my condolences, for the terrible atrocity that has happened on your soil.My heart goes out to all the families for their loss.God Bless from an English man.
Such a tribute to his nation... The people who were present to hear this had a once-in-a-lifetime experience and must have wept for days. So much emotion for such a young man. I am from America but cry everytime I hear Jan singing this. May God bless his family and loved ones.
this brings out the tears, the smile and the goosebumps.. You cant describe Jan with words, he was and still are a wonderful and fantastic singer :) May you rest in peace, and you will always be remembered in our family.. Hvil i fred, Jan Werner..
absolutely fantastic... I only just found out today that Jan Werner had died.. I had loved him since Eurovision 1994, but didn't know he had passed away... I have felt sad all day... He certainly left us with a beautiful legacy... RIP
i have just listened to a 17 year old sing with so much passion that way the best i have tears on my cheek so much emotion you can see it in his performance its a shame to think of him dead at such a young age if he had lived passes his 30s we would now know him all over the world . thank you for posting it and thank you jan for singing it may you rest in peace God must have need you for his choir
This is the best presentation, and most inspiring and moving performance that I have ever heard and seen. I only wish that I had know about this man when he was alive. He just lives and breathes and feels throughout his body what he sings or sang! A great loss to world, indeed!!!
This was the second time I instantly knew that a star was born. Totally blown away!
(by the way, the first time I had a moment like that, was the first time I saw Sissel Kyrkjebø, at the time aged 14, sing in at sing-together- everybody-and-be-happy- show on TV)
Helt enig med Maegzz81 her!
I agree with you, and I found him through YouTube too - a few weeks ago - and I am a Norwegian who moved to USA in 1995. I only saw him in the European Song Contest in 1994, but cannot, for some reason, remember this song.
OK, once and for all - the big "Who's best, Jan Werner or Tommy Korberg" question.
First of all, there's a big difference here. Jan Werner was 17 when he did this version, Korberg was almost 40 when he first did the recording in 1984 and in the West End in 1986.
This video and profile are here as a tribute to Jan Werner. So, I'm not interested in more "he's nothing compared to Korberg" comments. If you want to say something about Korberg, find one of his videos and say your praise there.
@RememberJan The two of them can't be compared at all, and why should we??? Did Jan Werner ever play the part of the Russian? Anyways, it's too bad we lost him, what a gift he had! Just imagine all the wonderful music we will never hear !!
Oppsummerer i grunn hele hans karriere. Jeg savner den stemmen. Har Jan Werner spilt inn Nessun Dorma noen gang? Rip Jan
As a native English speaker I'm always amazed at how good his English is. I wish I could pronounce another language as well especially at seventeen - it's almost flawless.
Thumbs down dude. English was not his first language and he was only 17. Jan Werner's voice was astounding. He is on par with Josh Groban, Freddy Mercury, Tommy, they are all wonderful singers in their own way. Really, with such a big difference in age you can't compare him with Tommy. But if I had to compare them when Jan was older, Jan is overall a superior vocalist to Tommy. Just my two cents.
About the vibrato.... i saw a documentary about freddy mercury. this guy who met him when he was young said that freddy sounded like a chicken when he sang. Even though see what we say about him today. one of the best vocalists ever. jan was 17 here and people complain about his english? he was asked by brian may to be the next vocalist of queen. körberg is over 40 and jan is 17. wake up people
hehe ive heared to körbergs version. and if you have ever heared the studio version of this from jan werner then you will hear that jan is far above körberg. körberg pushes too hard on the powerfull note and there is not much volume to get there. ive heared jan werner hit above F#5 in chest voice in some sort of belting. only one ive ever heared do so is david phelps. körberg is good but far from jan.
It seems like you and RememberJan are only talking about the power of voice/how wide their range is. That's just stupid if you're comparing how good the singers are. Körberg has a more powerful way of telling stories when he's singing and Jan Werner brought some nasalization to his tones now and then. And still, 10 years after, he had major problems pronounciating different words. Jan Werner had an awesome voice, I know. But to me, you're comparing ranges, not singers (Körberg's a baritone btw).
I'm talking about that *too*, no doubt about it. The power, range, technique is a big part of a person's voice. The emotion is always important as well, but *my* personal choice between Jan Werner and Korberg will always be Jan Werner - because he has all of the above.
He was 17 years old in this clip, and he never took any singing lessons!?!? I mean, WOW! Did he learn this by himself, or were his parents classical singers and taught him? Anyway, I didn't realize how amazing a vocalist he actually was until recently... Too bad he never got famous internationally, he certainly deserved that. Jan forever <3
He once heard a TV personality say that Barbra Streisand was the best singer in the world, and he thought to himself, "So if I can get as good as her, I can be the best in the world too..."
So he put on his Barbra tunes on full volume, lay on his back and tried to outsing her. In my humble opinion, he went past Barbra years ago...
I have heard 3 excellent versions of this song, Tommy Korberg, Anthony Warlow and this young man. They are all brilliant but let's not forget who the real stars of this song are. They will go down in history alongside Sibelius and other great composers. They have come a long way since Waterloo.
I'm going to say the same thing I said about Korberg. Both excellent performers, but both would be INCREDIBLE with training. Otherwise, they are easy to pick apart.
