Jimi Hendrix pioneered hard rock and metal, and who followed it? All white guys. Only Prince, THin Lizzy, and Living Color played hard rock, while thousands of white guys drove hard rock into the stratosphere. BLacks were busy doing funk, disco, blues, reggae, etc. That's great, but then rap stopped it all dead in its tracks. Rap is a curse. the sooner you face it the sooner you can get back to having something to be proud of.
@DivinelyMochaDipped You sound thoroughly uneducated and neck deep in your own black supremacist bullshit. Sure, black people invented gospel by merging african rhythms with what? IRISH and NORTHERN EUROPEAN FOLK SONGS. Pure african music sounds NOTHING like american pop music. Did blacks pioneer rock n roll and other styles? Sure, and whites FURTHERED IT. Blacks stopped pioneering with rap, that was the end. Face reality. Your race got neck deep in pride and blew it. Rap stinks.
0:21 Says it all all. It's a joke to whites, they are pimping rap music b/c they're bored and doing it on a whim. They have no respect for what blacks have been through. Blacks rap, because that what they LIVED!!!! All the oppression, all the pain, all the injustice, all the poverty. Can most whites relate? No b/c to them it's all a joke! smh
I'm a white guy who liked rap until about 1994 or so. Since then, it got all popped out, and the beats got fucked up in my opinion, not to mention the utter lack of politics (PE) of rappers of recent times.
Like most music genres it had its day when it was new, and that day is gone.
Just because you're white means you want to hear white rappers. The only one who was any good is Eminem, and he's the most innovative rapper of any that are famous now. He came up in the culture, though.
I'm going to make a documentary about black people who graduate high school, know how to spell and take care of their children and accuse them of stealing white culture.
Those chicks taking the top off reggae are just hos selling their bodies as a novelty, because they really do suck. I would say they love a culture that isn't theirs, and they're doing a rotten job of performing it. As far as the 2 white crew, that is pretty much racist. That said, I've met so many fucking racist black people in this country. Chuck D is a genius. Fact is, the whole country is going down a materialistic hellhole. BTW asshole Mooney, white people DO get SHOT by cops. TARD.
This movie may have had good intentions, but it was highly ignorant. It is an inherently racist movie itself, implying that blacks are the only ones who have originated original 'culture' in America, which is fucking retarded. Tbe blues have been called the merging of african rhythms and IRISH songwriting. Get that part, racists? Elvis may have stolen the blues but he was also a total entertainer who did other work as well. I suppose the Beatles stole everything the knew from blacks as well.
u sound bitter. get over it. truth is when it comes to music, it was all rooted in african rhythm. some white ppl may have come along, mimicked, and added their own style. but the foundation of american music is rooted in black innovation and genius. i know white america doesn't favor putting "black, innovation, and genius" together in one sentence, but the truth is the truth. *yawn*
Led Zeppelin stole SOME blues, but threw in a healthy dose of celtic and irish songwriting and inspiration as well as the raw talent of one of the best guitarists, drummers and vocalists ever. Jimi Hendrix was also at the forefront of heavy metal, but he wasn't the only guy to do it, or to take hard rock into the 70s. Whites were more than happy to have him, but is it white people's fault that black people won't pick up guitars anymore and insist on rapping nonsensical bullshit?
I liked rap 20 years ago, but get real - it is an extremely stripped down simple music style, full of lazy sampling and little vocal demands beyond talking in time and rhyme. I suppose black people invented writing, too, right? Alan GInsburg and William S Burroughs and beat poets stole their work from blacks too? Maybe rappers stole their style from the beats. Mooney is a flat out racist, period. I've found him funny, but he is all about his clan, which is very American of him.
Fact is there are truly talented people of all races, and most wannabes are just jealous they're not that good. NWA was talented because Ice Cube was talented. Eminem is better than most other rappers because he's more talented, regardless of his color, and most black people know he's good. Rap is a joke now. It's just a venue for people with no talent to become performers. If they entertain a crowd at a show, fine, have fun, but if you don't make it, don't blame race for it.
And if a white person turns out to be a rap genius, then it's like a black person turning out to be an electronica star - IT DOESNT MATTER, which is why this film is so fucking stupid - because it acts like people should care. So what if people beat up whiggers in hillbillyville. They're stupid. There's blacks beating up their own for getting educated, and that isn't brilliant either. As far as comedy goes, if people make fun of you, maybe you should ask why.
Please somebody upload the clip of Empire Isis in the studio asking for the reggae dude to change his lyrics from "Early to bed, early to rise" to "something about ZION!" That slayed me.
I feel like, wiggers are so ... MINSTREL SHOW! Most of them are racists who might as well throw on fucking Black-face and complete the image. You people have your own culture... at least I should hope so. And hip hop is not about fucking showboating like an idiot. Get a clue wiggers. Perhaps this documentary will help me UNDERSTAND them instead of automatically being DISGUSTED by them.
it sucks, because for every 100 vanilla ices who don't take hiphop seriously and don't respect the culture and the history, there's maybe one eminem who not only loves and lives the art but needs it to feel whole. who are we to tell that one white guy he's wrong? i feel like if you come to it with respect for the culture, with knowlede of the history, and with awareness of the political role you, as a white person, play in hiphop, there's no reason you can't be there.
@tsdcs Hey. I def want to watch it. BTW, I don't think that all european-americans into hip-hop are wiggers. Sage Francis, for example, probably isn't. I don't even think vanilla ice is a wigger - i don't know the guy. But I DO know some fucking wiggers. Their perception and interpretation of the culture of Africans in the diaspora who descended from enslaved people are FUCKED up, condescending, and way off base. I can't wait to see this.
I saw the film and you're missing the point. Aesop Rock and KNO (and prob KNO, but who is he) are NOT the same as all white people. There's a lot of gray, lots of different motives, lots of different aims, but people like you just want to jump out - swinging! - w/ something downright ignorant like it's "subliminally saying Aesop Rock is like Vanilla Ice is like KNO is like xyz". If it's subliminal, its coming from you're inside your head.
@amplifya It doesn't strike me as "foul" to put Aesop Rock and KNO in here. You recognized them as doing something other than mocking, and I bet others will, too. But I'll bet you that Aesop Rock has been called a wigger before. That word is thrown at people without thinking about what they're doing, and that seems more the point. People judge without thinking. People act without thinking. You might think Aesop Rock is being trashed from this, but I saw the film, and he's not.
From someone else who's seen the movie, I agree 200%. Nobody in their right mind would say Aesop Rock and Vanilla Ice are the same person, much less Aesop Rock and Crack'd Out, the group featured at the end of this trailer.

does this movie bother to explore whether some of the people labeled as "white" hip hop artists are actually mixed race?

@Meklorka or "black" artists, for that matter?

I've been staring at these 4 elements of hip-hop for awhile. I missed the one that has anything to do w/ race.
Seems to be a case study in ambiguity?
= a red herring.
The final product here, despite the rampant name-dropping, seems to be even more lame than when I saw it being put together like 4 years ago.
'Stealing Home' doc was about 4000% better. Because it seemingly had a tangible point to discuss.

this is a good concept for a movie but i think every kids reason for doin it is different and 'wiggers' shouldn't be put in2 same bracket.
Vanilla ice clips were shit tho hes an embarasment to white hiphop

All white people who like hip hop were not put into the same category.
Watch the movie, it was very well done.
