Jimi Hendrix pioneered hard rock and metal, and who followed it? All white guys. Only Prince, THin Lizzy, and Living Color played hard rock, while thousands of white guys drove hard rock into the stratosphere. BLacks were busy doing funk, disco, blues, reggae, etc. That's great, but then rap stopped it all dead in its tracks. Rap is a curse. the sooner you face it the sooner you can get back to having something to be proud of.

I'm a white guy who liked rap until about 1994 or so. Since then, it got all popped out, and the beats got fucked up in my opinion, not to mention the utter lack of politics (PE) of rappers of recent times.

Like most music genres it had its day when it was new, and that day is gone.

Just because you're white means you want to hear white rappers. The only one who was any good is Eminem, and he's the most innovative rapper of any that are famous now. He came up in the culture, though.

This movie may have had good intentions, but it was highly ignorant. It is an inherently racist movie itself, implying that blacks are the only ones who have originated original 'culture' in America, which is fucking retarded. Led Zeppelin stole SOME blues, but threw in a healthy dose of celtic and irish songwriting and inspiration as well as the raw talent of one of the best guitarists, drummers and vocalists ever. Jimi Hendrix was also at the forefront of heavy metal, but he wasn't the only guy to do it, or to take hard rock into the 70s. Whites were more than happy to have him, but is it white people's fault that black people won't pick up guitars anymore and insist on rapping nonsensical bullshit?

I liked rap 20 years ago, but get real - it is an extremely stripped down simple music style, full of lazy sampling and little vocal demands beyond talking in time and rhyme. I suppose black people invented writing, too, right? Alan GInsburg and William S Burroughs and beat poets stole their work from blacks too? Maybe rappers stole their style from the beats. Mooney is a flat out racist, period. I've found him funny, but he is all about his clan, which is very American of him.

Fact is there are truly talented people of all races, and most wannabes are just jealous they're not that good. NWA was talented because Ice Cube was talented. Eminem is better than most other rappers because he's more talented, regardless of his color, and most black people know he's good. Rap is a joke now. It's just a venue for people with no talent to become performers. If they entertain a crowd at a show, fine, have fun, but if you don't make it, don't blame race for it.

it sucks, because for every 100 vanilla ices who don't take hiphop seriously and don't respect the culture and the history, there's maybe one eminem who not only loves and lives the art but needs it to feel whole. who are we to tell that one white guy he's wrong? i feel like if you come to it with respect for the culture, with knowlede of the history, and with awareness of the political role you, as a white person, play in hiphop, there's no reason you can't be there.

I saw the film and you're missing the point. Aesop Rock and KNO (and prob KNO, but who is he) are NOT the same as all white people. There's a lot of gray, lots of different motives, lots of different aims, but people like you just want to jump out - swinging! - w/ something downright ignorant like it's "subliminally saying Aesop Rock is like Vanilla Ice is like KNO is like xyz". If it's subliminal, its coming from you're inside your head.

From someone else who's seen the movie, I agree 200%. Nobody in their right mind would say Aesop Rock and Vanilla Ice are the same person, much less Aesop Rock and Crack'd Out, the group featured at the end of this trailer.
