this is not a viable filter system for a serious koi keeper ,in fact i would not risk keeping my koi using it at all, maybe ok for gold fish ,cleaning it would be a diss advantage and without using a uv the water would be covered in blanket weed in a week,at least three different types of media to catch debris and trap healthy bacteria in order for the fish to survive would be essential ,cutting corners means you will end up where you started ,at the beginning!
How is the pond running with the filter system? I am thinking of building one modelled on yours but with an internal pump. Do you find the stones are handling the filtering ok?
@MrTricksRus yes the stones filter was good catch more poop and tiny debris the only downside is cleaning backwashing but everything is ok...some people used lava rocks
@ocbc1975 not really to me im very happy what i have may be next year i dig more another 3feet so total 6 feet deep or add 2 two more center block up less work for me..GOTPOND?
@mexicanking3456 yap,but the swimming pool pump runs only few hours ....you need a pump runs 24/7.....i bought this last year around $130 bucks comes with pump and restraining basket ( evolution es3500) on electric bills i payed $11 a month extra
Looks like your efforts paid off. You are gonna want to get some good shade for any koi in the desert. Star has hardy lillies in that you could plant in containers...they do great out here. Also check out NV Water Gardens for some large Koi. He had some nice ones in stock last month when I was there.

NIce video would have liked commentary more then music. Just so you know the average recommended depth for a koi pond is 4 feet or deeper..
