I like everything about it, even the expressions, it is very beautiful of expressing his emotion for playing this song.; I would also say that the sound is quite beautiful and probably a lot more true to the original Bach feeling than say a Hilary Hahn rendition. Getting analytical at this point just highlights your own flaws.
@indiandude786 are you traying to teach the master??? really?? so.. you mean yo can do it better than him?... let's see... upload a video of you playing that song better than him! :)
@AgnusDei0fire jeez...dude u need to CALM down, i never said he was bad or that oi could do better than him but what i was saying is still right, his sound is airy, and no in this recording only, his 24th caprise is off too, plus this one has quite a bit of really out of tune notes in the beginning, ps. hes not the master, he seems a bit over confident...just my opinion. Some times a great teacher doesnt mean a great student.
Hmm - Clayton posts to promote his (expensive) DVD courses. I know from his blog that he's an insightful teacher. But I don't think he does himself any favours by promoting himself as "World Class". Sure, he's a solid pro, but compare this to, say, the version here by Hilary Hahn and you can see that in terms of tone, articulation, phrasing and general control he's not in the ball park. And the breathing technique he teaches seems to produce so much noise it's being picked up by the mic!
I personally think it's too fast. I mean it's supposed to be a dance after all. And I really don't understand how he can play all of that in the upper half of his bow, WHATA LEGEND!!! I'm gonna show my teacher this and then he'll shut up!
the gigue or geigen was actually written for the violin ... now I appreciate very much this interpretation ... but the violinist should not pull faces to heighten the dramatic effect .. .
As a long time piano and guitar player who has recently picked up the violin (I was attracted by a lifelong annoyance at not having sustained notes lol) , I can honestly agree with the assessment that guitar is hardly a match for the skill required to produce acceptable sounding music. Not here to piss anyone off, but plucking a guitar string is just is just that. Frets handle pitch. It takes a lot of practice just to get a good sound with a straight bow on an open string. And vibrato... god
wow, I just don't understand how he does not drop the violin, it seems to be almost on his chest, I play with no shoulder rest but I keep it a lot more higher up on my collarbone than he does....if I kept it as low as him I'd drop it LOL :)
That was a superior performance. Glad you included his left hand in the video most of the time. I learned a lot just by watching him. Thanks for sharing that. It was superb.
i'm learning this piece on guitar and i think it's harder on guitar since the fret board is bigger than violin and the movements of the fingers are bigger. no disrespect to violin. a very challenging piece regaurdless.
@JonMoucheron17 Guitar is easy compared to the violin, lol. I cant believe you even said that, especially when its about Bach music. Do you know how hard it is to play Bach on the violin? Everything has to be perfect.
@katieeob: ?????? you teaching this guy how to play????? are you kidding me...and what's wrong with his intonation and "tonality" (i suppose you're referring to "tone" here, tonality means something else altogether)?
This is not enough, it is only 20% of the true path to Carnegie Hall: 1) Practice like hell (or a bit less) 2) Have the right (?) parents 3) Find the right teacher from early on 4) Have incredible inborn talent (!) 5) Have big luck!
Good question. Suppose he did buy the whole bow? My guess would be greater control upon string crossings? Anyone have an answer? He learned from Milstein who was the master of these. Wonder what he had to say about it.. LOL *8)

It's not really a dramatic effect. He's simply being moved by the amazing music.

Being your own interpenetration, its good. on the other-hand, stylistically it isn'.t correct.

I like his playing he's able to play well anyway.

I think this way played a tad too fast. Plus the intonation was off and the bow strokes were a bit raspy at time. He just needs to loosen up.
His phrasing and dynamics were done well, though.

It's not harder. Guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn. That comment was bad and you should feel bad.

@KittyRokher I play both and classical guitar is not easy although to pick up a guitar and get a nice sound definitely is easier.
TomAnkcorn 5 months ago
@TomAnkcorn
No, it's definately not easy. No instrument is easy to master. But compared to the violin, it's a lot easier.

use full bows and slow down your playing holy, i never play this piece so fast, your tonality and intonation will progress if you slow down
