This is a problem because word choices give insight into the individual using them.
I hate when people "that's gay" or "that's retarded" because they use them as a synonym for "bad" or "wrong"
I understand that the intentions of these words vary with context, but I lose respect for people who aren't thinking about they words they use, and their origins because they are either choosing to be ignorant to protect their conscience, or they simply don't care who they are offending.
Also, not questioning our language is representative of the mindset where we don't question the norms of our society, be it language or practice or whatever else.
Gay Mean Happy, This is so GAY i found it hard most of the time because it is term phase i am found this insulted most of the time, sometime feel insults at time depends on situcation good video hon Hugs Kisses Love Gizmo xox
Good video! I know exactly what you mean. Most of the time people use it as slang and dont even think of offending anyone. But the things people say usually say more about them than who are what they are talking about...so if someone is being ignorant or you think they are then dont take it personally. it only affects you if you let it.
i can't get over how much you look like my wife!!! damn girl! i don't see a problem with it either... my wife and i are constantly telling each other to quit being gay... it's just another way of saying "yeah right"... i'm bisexual by nature and my wife has always been extremely liberal regarding others sexuality... i've never used the term with any of my gay friends... i'm gonna try it out and see where it goes....
I'm not big on the "no homo" phrase, especially among guys, because I'd rather hetero guys came to terms with their discomfort with gay men. Instead, they doth tend to protest too much.
In fact, I know some guys who don't even like seeing men with their shirts off! I'd like to say to them, "If you're afraid that look at a naked man will make you gay, it's too late. You already are."
@CineRam i can understand that. i find though that a lot of people say it to others who don't know them well, so they don't want said person to confuse their sexuality. sometimes it is out of insecurity, but other times it's purely out of avoiding confusion, especially if the person you're talking to is gay or bi. it'd be awkward for them to think you're interested, hit on you, then you have to explain that you didn't mean your comment in "that" way
@Aoifeunderland - Is it really that big a deal to explain to someone that you don't swing that way? I don't think so, but I suppose some people can't quite get over those awkward feelings. "Sorry man, hate to dsappoint, but..." I think it helps to have a sense of humor about it. Joking around a bit would help...if a person can remember to.
I hate that gay is an insult, i suffer anxiety in general but especially great social anxiety and it really burns into me whenever i feel like coming out to someone but i know that gay is used as an insult.
@Yahweigh i have severe social anxiety too. but like i was saying in the video, words mean what we make them mean. if you're expecting that everybody you meet uses the term gay as an insult, then you're going to percieve it as an insult if they say it. words mean nothing without the intent behind them
I think a lot of people try to be too politically correct they forget what they're even fighting for. These terms don't phase me at all and I also use them and don't think it's offensive at all
i personally dont use those be to offensive, people make a lot of jokes, but every body makes fun of every body, people take things to serious, people need to learn to laugh at themselves and need to learn how to take a joke, and how to accept being putting in the hot spot, because every body has been.
@brandylabranche exactly! i find that in the LGBT community, everybody takes themselves incredibly seriously. yeah, i understand that we're fighting for our rights as human beings and trying to change societies perception of us, but god damn, lighten up every once in a while!
@Aoifeunderland ahha yea, like, i know some people take it to far, like teens committing suicide because its not just once in a while, but thats when you have to stand up for your self, and get help, gays may feel alone, but they are definitely not! Plus everybody feels alone, even the people who seem strong. also, killing your self because of someone elses actions, is kind of silly, i understand people have different pain tolerant's but man, THERE IS HELP!
@brandylabranche People commit suicide for tons of reasons and they are bullied for tons of reasons. Homosexuality or perceived homosexuality is only one of them. Saying you are not a homosexual isn't bullying somebody who is. I find the phrase "no homo" stupid because its grammatically incorrect. Its just less verbose than saying you "look gorgeous but I'm not saying I want to get you naked and have sex with you or anything." I sometimes compliment ppl I don't want to sleep with too. ;O.
All I can say is that change happens slowly, usually over generations and the only way to speed it up is to use education and DISincentive. Also, the term "Cisgender"? That gets people thinking.
if your offended by they you probably wouldn't like FCKH8's first video or any of their videos for my I dont care if its negative but if it is positive I will care that means they except us for who we are most of the time
These words have different meaning depending on their context. I use "so gay" and "fag" and I'm gay my self. No one has possession of these words.
I don't know a single gay person who's offended by it. There will always be a distinction between hetero and homosexuals, because there's no way of telling who is gay or straight just by looking. Because that difference will always be there, there will be teasing going on.
@ReignbowSmite And until the LGBTQ can curb their own bigotry: Racism, gold star lesbians, transhate, and heterophobia... I don't really think a lot of us in this group have the right to point fingers.
