There would never be a such thing as a "first" dog, the first and only of its kind. Evolution does not apply to individuals, but to populations. (Besides, man created the dog through artificial selection, but that's another matter entirely).

Therefore, early specimens who carried mutated genes that toughened the area around the brain would have had a higher probability of surviving. Fast forward 600 million years and you have mammals with a full skull and brain.

There would never be a such thing as a "first" dog, the first and only of its kind. Evolution does not apply to individuals, but to populations. (Besides, man created the dog through artificial selection, but that's another matter entirely).

Therefore, early specimens who carried mutated genes that toughened the area around the brain would have had a higher probability of surviving. Fast forward 600 million years and you have mammals with a full skull and brain.

Nope. There are many organisms in nature that reproduce sexually as well as asexually, depending on circumstances. And what, if you get right down to basics, is sexual reproduction ultimately, other than a means of exchanging genetic information - something that happens in even the simplest lifeforms?
