Erm, are the dates wrong in this episode? John says as they're coming in here that 6 weeks ago Moriarty broke into the prison, the bank and the Tower of London and then after this scene it says 'two months later' when John is at the ATM. But then at the start of the episode we saw john with his therapist in present day and then after the credits it cut to 3 months ago with the Reichenbach case...
@Eriks0Angel Well, I'm assuming the six weeks is part of those two months. Meaning that the amount of time between this scene and the ATM scene probably isn't two months, but much less.
This scene actually made me pretty sad. To me, it's just one of the buildup scenes to an idea that is emphasized in Reichenbach - that people reject Sherlock for what he is really like, and wants him to change (like telling him to go easy on the granny, telling him to be gentle with the kid.). This is the second(?) time that John tells Sherlock to do something other than what he naturally does.
Well, not really. John is helping Sherlock learn to emphasize with others. It's an ability that he completely lacks, because he's pretty much autistic.
@CaptainAlias Hmmm... that's actually a really good point. Yeah you know, the more I think about it, the more I think you're right. Thanks for taking the time to write that!
@FlorescentInk That's one way of looking at it. Although Sherlock rejects just about everyone else for what they're really like. He spends about 90% of his time telling people to do something other than what they naturally do and is generally rude and tactless. I love Sherlock, but I think every now and then he deserves a dose of his own medicine. He's not God. Anyway, he and John are friends, he doesn't need John to go easy on him. He doesn't go easy on John. They're honest with each other.
@solitaryscientist That really is a good point as well - it's him getting a dose of his own medicine, and John is just the right person to deliver it; anyone else simply wouldn't work. And don't worry- I really enjoyed reading your response to my comment. To be honest, I didn't ever consider such a viewpoint on that scene, and I'm glad you brought it to my attention.
@FlorescentInk You're welcome! :) I think it's only fair, seeing as he called John an idiot to his face the second day he met him. :P And yes, you're totally right, John's the only person to do it. He's the only one who knows him well enough and loves him enough to have earned the right to criticise him.
This scene reminds me of the scene in Doctor Who when the Doctor tells River that she had her "he's hot when he's clever face" on. Actually, when John said that Sherlock had that face on, I thought he was going to say the same thing! Oh my. : D
xD what makes me laugh is that John just sits down and bickers with sherlock bout the look his making xD If that doesn't say 'been his flatmate too long' I don't know what does :)
Ooooo @MegaBookWormGirl Thank you so much for that insight. I am one who has not read the stories but want and will soon. I love the Granada Sherlock with Brett/Burke/Hardwicke as Sherlock & Dr. Watson. That piece of story makes me smile :-D as I can see clearly both JBrett & B.C. pouting at the thought that their Watsons won't be able to accompany them. The loyalty & devotion goes both ways for sure! I wonder if A.C.Doyle had a bestie who he based Dr.Watson on? I hope so. <3
Yes! @Hekateras :-D John has doubts but Sherlock truly values his opinion & insight. His intellect is that of the every-man (us). I love in The Great Game where Sherlock asks John to deduce as regards to the Tennis Shoes (Trainers) & John is "No no I'm not going to do that so you can humilate me"& Sherlock sincerely encourages him-only to sweetly say his deductions were good except he missed almost everything of importance. While not quite on the same level as Sherlock-John is valued. :-) <3
@poppyf01 Sherlock really does appreciate John more than people give him credit for. One time in the book he asks if John can come along on a case, and it pretty much goes like this:
"Actually, I have a neighbor who--"
*Pout* "Oh, if his cases are more interesting than mine -_-"
"...I was gonna say he'll take over my practice while I'm gone."
"Oh yay 8D"
He practically throws a pity party at the prospect of John not wanting to come along. I thought it was so sweet xD He really does value him.
This scene is really for difficult deduction. So, what is really going on with their faces?:) Sherly and John obviously:) knows, what exactly does it mean, but we obviously don't know:)
@MissNephilimAngel With these two gets the word "imagination" completely new meaning:) I think, that's exactly what we want:) Sherlock created new cult of modern age and gave him many titles which should be included in dictionaries:)
John should be flattered instead of annoyed :-) reading between the lines-Sherlock is stating how much respect for Dr. Watson's intelligence he has...his line "well WE do" (as regards to them both understanding what is going on here), but then John goes and shatters it by being truthful and saying "No I don't" lol...Sherlock values him so much. "Doing the face" in John's presence is a high compliment I think. <3
@poppyf01 Better yet, after John explains why he finds "The Face" so annoying, Sherlock just skips straight ahead to what's going on instead of rambling about John being dim or t he like.
@poppyf01 Either that, or it's just the fact that Sherlock thinks everything's so obvious so he just assumes that everyone else does too. Like when he realized the answer was Rachel in "A Study In Pink" and everyone just turned into questionmarks, his reaction to their cluelessness was just precious. "Look at you lot, you're all so vacant. Is it nice not being me? It must be so relaxing". XD
It reminds me a lot the Doctor/River's scene from the season 5 when the doctor says "You're doingt that face" and River answers "What face?" and then the doctors says "The 'He's hot when He's clever' face" "This is my normal face!"! There are similitudes ^O^
@SooSunPia i thought im the only one who find sherlock & john's relationship strangely similar to the doctor & river's... in a funny kind of timey wimey ...facey non sexual.. way.
always when I watch this scene, i understand oll of John´s speaking, but Sherlock...no :)
maybe I should say I am from germany...^^

"Watson."
