  • It's Pohjola not Pohyola.

  • I must say that I am angry that I have never seen this film. Why is this not better known in Finland? Does this give too positive image about our eastern neighbor?

  • I newer knew that a film like this existed. This is invaluable! My ancestors came from this world. One of them is still alive.

  • Saw this yearssss ago, probably late nite PBS & loved it. Happy to see it again.

Special effects today could take a big lesson from this wonderfully staged story.

    Best Wishes, Katie

  • These movies rock

  • @TheKenraali11

  • What's with the bear at 4:56?

  • @cathrynm to much Koskenkorva ;D

  • This version has lots of cuttings and abridges.

  • KIITOS!!!!

  • KIITOS!!!!

  • Wow, unbelievable! I saw this film on TV when I was a little girl, and then once more some time later -- I've never forgotten how operatic and magical it seemed, but I could never find it on DVD to rent. Imagine finding it posted complete here on YT! You've really made my day. Thanks so, so much.

  • Let me park my log, I'll be right there honey!

  • Who needs a boat when you can shoot rapids standing on a log

  • Brilliant! The english version cuts nearly 1/3. Great to see it full length at last with subtitles.

  • Thanks for uploading this! I have read the Kalevala and find the Sami mythology fascinating.

  • Fantastic! Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! I love the Kalevala and Finnish movies.

By the way, note the film logo - that's the same Soviet movie studio that produced Sergei Eisenstein's movies.

Also, what's with the crushingly overpowering film score? I half-expect bats and whatnot to be flying around in the inappropriately spooky opening.

  • Do finnish TV shows this movie nowadays? Or Finns dont know about it?

  • Kiitokset videoista!

  • You're welcome :)

  • Wow I had no idea!!!

Wonderous world :) Thank You everso for sharing.
