  • This is the best sweet and sour sauce I've tried to date! I'm 65 and have been looking for a recipe that comes close to what they have in the Chinese Rest. I frequent and this is it! I made black pepper chicken and put your sweet and sour sauce on it and it tastes just like theirs, Thank you!

  • how can anyone criticise Betty's cooking, especially when she has such a beautiful face and saucy voice!

  • im a big fan of Betty, but when i tried this recipe,i thought it has too much of vinegar in it...

  • wow thanks a lot betty its so delicious

  • I made this yesterday & was surprised at how tasty this is, at first i kind of thought it was going to have a 'cheap' taste to it, but this is every bit as good as the stuff you get from a high class Chinese restaurant & i cant praise it highly enough, i will be sticking with this recipe... Thankyou Betty!!! The UK calls it Cornflower, USA call it Cornstarch, hope that helps anyone confused... :-)

  • thanks

  • Hi Betty! I love your recipes and watch you quite often. One thing I neeed to know is, where did you get the rectangle measuring spoons? I love them and I keep looking everywhere and cant find them....

  • @ladyacephoto My daughter bought those measuring spoons for me at a discount store, Gabriel Bothers in Lexington, Kentucky. It might be hard to find them now.

    --Betty :)

  • can i use apple cider vinegar and water

  • @khepruuu Yes, that would work.

    --Betty :)

  • I just made this, so easy and super good. Thanks so much for the recipe. Also rice wine vinegar not that difficult to find people, its at every grocery store.

  • hey betty can cornflower be used inplace of the cornstarch?

  • Hi, I would like to know if there something I can replace for cornstarch?

  • i really liked your recipe betty.. :) now i can do sweet and sour sauce myself..

  • THANKS!(:

MY MOMS GONNA BE JEALOUS HEHE:D

  • what? rice vinegar i thought this was simple ....

  • @2012Mighty You may use any kind of vinegar that you like.

    --Betty :)

  • Thank you so much!

  • hi ms. betty, what if I don't have rice vinegar?? what's the alternative vinegar to use?

  • @thejheve1 You may use another type of vinegar--even regular white vinegar.

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks for this Betty. One question though, what's the difference if I use sugar cane vinegar rather than rice vinegar?

  • @19vrats89 Cane vinegar, made from sugarcane juice, ranges from dark yellow to golden brown in color, and has a mellow flavor, similar in some respects, to rice vinegar, though with a somewhat "fresher" taste. Contrary to expectation, containing no residual sugar, it is not sweeter than other vinegars.

    --Betty :)

  • Oh dear betty! Thank you for sharing your recipe. This sauce goes so well with my spring roll, it was delicious! PS: my mom loves it too, she said that it was not too spicy or too sour, just the perfect taste sauce:)

  • Is rice vinegar and rice wine the same?

  • @cosmicgate07 They are not the same. A vinegar is basically a wine gone bad. The name comes from the French for "sour wine," and refers to the fact that any alcoholic beverage turns sour when it is exposed to air. This natural process turns the alcohol to acetic acid, and a vinegar is born. Before the advent of the wine cork, in fact, keeping wine from turning to vinegar was a constant problem.

    --Betty :)

  • very nice recipe,i definitely will try, thanks for sharing it!

  • I am going to try to male this anyld taste it for my self I will let you know how it taste when I am done with it than you for your helpful receipt. It's help me a lot.

  • Hi Betty, nice recipe, I have a question, I have eaten meat balls as a snack and they made this sweet and sour sauce and they some how added cranberry juice in it, it was not bad but, what do you think by adding cranberry juice in it?

  • @vminerva14 I think the flavor of cranberry juice would go well in this sauce--but I've never tried it.

    --Betty :)

  • Hey ! :) What do you think about adding some ginger ?

  • @Benassisz I think a small amount of ginger would be a great addition to this sauce.

    --Betty :)

  • Do you think paprika would taste well in this?

  • @Lythya Yes, I love paprika in sauces. I wouldn't go overboard, though; just a sprinkle.

    --Betty :)

  • This is served for 2 or just for 1 person?!

  • @msvkleon This should serve 2 people.

    --Betty :)

  • wow, Ive never seen a range with five burners! interesting!

  • @beatlejn I never noticed that it was different!

    --Betty :)

  • can you use corn flower instead of cornstarch?

  • @Mr666max666 Yes, that should be fine.

    --Betty :)

  • @bettyskitchen made this tonight, yum. :)

  • @Mr666max666 Thanks for your great feedback! I really appreciate it!

    --Betty :)

  • can i used apple cider vinegar instead of rice vinegar?

    --Betty :)

  • Would Malt viniger work?

  • @CreshoVlog Yes, the taste would be a little different, but I think you would like it if you like malt vinegar.

    --Betty :)

  • whos the guitar player at the beginning? He sounds phenomenal

  • @bce5150 I don't know the guitar player. The music is Bach: Air on the G string.

    --Betty :)

  • Very nice recipe thought it was a lot more complicated than that. Thank you from Dave in the UK

  • @1dowsey Thanks for your sweet comment! I really appreciate it, Dave.

    --Betty :)

  • what temperature do you boil the mixture over the stove for?

  • @isoloedyourmum On my stove, it is low to medium heat.

    --Betty :)

  • personaly i would recomend adding the corn starch after the mix has come to the boil and disolcved

  • @TheRivalConcept Adding cornstarch to hot mixtures will cause lumping, and I try to avoid that. Thanks for your comment!

    --Betty :)

  • @bettyskitchen i have added the corn starch to the mixture after heating and if you turn off the heat and add the corn starch in while mixing, you dont get any lumping. it doesnt really matter how you do it. everyone has their own style.

  • @Ginissi Thanks for your comment! I have never tried it that way, but I am glad to know that it works!

    --Betty :)

  • i like the recipe and the accent while it was being made. thanks.

  • Was just wondering if without pineapple juice it tastes the same

  • @Toximane4 It probably wouldn't taste the "same," but it would be fine. Or, you could substitute another juice.

    --Betty :)

  • can you use apple cider vinager?

  • @Rachelbattleleafz Yes, definitely!

    --Betty :)

  • thnk u bettey

  • hey betty is there anything i can use instead of cornstarch ???

  • @xXnobioneXx You may use flour. The end result will not look as "clear," but the taste will be very much the same.

    --Betty :)

  • ahh I used apple cider vinegar cause that;s all I had...didn't go over well

  • You make me happy when I'm hungry.... cheers Betty:D

  • @guyanesebeauty1 Thanks for the great feedback! I really appreciate it!

    --Betty :)

  • Is it necessary to use rice vinegar? Or will regular white vinegar suffice?

  • @TehKitteh01 Regular white vinegar is fine. I like to vary the types of vinegar occasionally, but, in this case, white vinegar will work perfectly!

    --Betty :)

  • @bettyskitchen Wonderful! Thank you so much Ma'am :)

  • @ForgetaboutFreeman Yes, you may make those substitutions, and yes, the cornstarch is for thickening the sauce.

    --Betty :)

  • hthere, great vid, could you tell me roughly how much 1/3 cup is in say ml or something as im from england and we dont really tend to use the cup measurments here and none of my measuring jugs etc... have cups marked on them.

also i made a sauce similar to this the other day but with white sugar and normal malt vinigar would you say the brown sugar and rice vinigar give a better result?

  • @4ftofflame 1 cup = 240 ml, so 1/3 cup = 80 ml. I prefer brown sugar and rice vinegar to white sugar and malt vinegar, but it's just a matter of preference.

    --Betty :)

  • look good! easy make.i try this.

  • I gotta try this. I have some sweet and sour recipes on my site check them out!

  • Hi Betty this is just a side ? How do I place a picture of me on my account it just shows a siloute a figure. I do have a video here but its not n the area where it saids if people want to subscribe to me.

  • @shaquithas This is just a sauce to accompany chicken, fish, shrimp, etc. On my channel, I can go to "Account" and there is a picture of me. Underneath the picture I can click "Change" to change the picture. I hope this helps!

    --Betty :)

  • and the very first thing my father told me about cornstach was: you always always add lukewarm water to mix the cornstach to prevent lumps.

and the longer you cook the sauce with the cornstach, the thicker gets the sauce...

  • @123yaya000 no offense, your dad was incorrect. Always mix cornstarch with cold water.

  • it is a really nice receipe. now, i don't want to correct you or giving you advice, (because this version of the receipe seems to be very tasty and easy done) but i still want to share with you, how i am doing a such receipe ... as a chinese ^.^:

we would add a little pinapple juice, because the wonderful juicy flavour.

and what we do with the cornstach: we would cook the entire sauce first and only add the cornstach at the end ... as the very last step.

  • Excellent, thank you!

  • @Treza143 Hi! This only makes about 1/2 cup or so. You may want to increase the recipe, proportionately, if you need more.

    --Betty :)
