This is the best sweet and sour sauce I've tried to date! I'm 65 and have been looking for a recipe that comes close to what they have in the Chinese Rest. I frequent and this is it! I made black pepper chicken and put your sweet and sour sauce on it and it tastes just like theirs, Thank you!
I made this yesterday & was surprised at how tasty this is, at first i kind of thought it was going to have a 'cheap' taste to it, but this is every bit as good as the stuff you get from a high class Chinese restaurant & i cant praise it highly enough, i will be sticking with this recipe... Thankyou Betty!!! The UK calls it Cornflower, USA call it Cornstarch, hope that helps anyone confused... :-)
Hi Betty! I love your recipes and watch you quite often. One thing I neeed to know is, where did you get the rectangle measuring spoons? I love them and I keep looking everywhere and cant find them....
@ladyacephoto My daughter bought those measuring spoons for me at a discount store, Gabriel Bothers in Lexington, Kentucky. It might be hard to find them now.
I just made this, so easy and super good. Thanks so much for the recipe. Also rice wine vinegar not that difficult to find people, its at every grocery store.
@19vrats89 Cane vinegar, made from sugarcane juice, ranges from dark yellow to golden brown in color, and has a mellow flavor, similar in some respects, to rice vinegar, though with a somewhat "fresher" taste. Contrary to expectation, containing no residual sugar, it is not sweeter than other vinegars.
Oh dear betty! Thank you for sharing your recipe. This sauce goes so well with my spring roll, it was delicious! PS: my mom loves it too, she said that it was not too spicy or too sour, just the perfect taste sauce:)
@cosmicgate07 They are not the same. A vinegar is basically a wine gone bad. The name comes from the French for "sour wine," and refers to the fact that any alcoholic beverage turns sour when it is exposed to air. This natural process turns the alcohol to acetic acid, and a vinegar is born. Before the advent of the wine cork, in fact, keeping wine from turning to vinegar was a constant problem.
I am going to try to male this anyld taste it for my self I will let you know how it taste when I am done with it than you for your helpful receipt. It's help me a lot.
Hi Betty, nice recipe, I have a question, I have eaten meat balls as a snack and they made this sweet and sour sauce and they some how added cranberry juice in it, it was not bad but, what do you think by adding cranberry juice in it?
@bettyskitchen i have added the corn starch to the mixture after heating and if you turn off the heat and add the corn starch in while mixing, you dont get any lumping. it doesnt really matter how you do it. everyone has their own style.
this is a great recipe!!!! i made it just a few minutes ago and it turned out a success!!!! thanks...by the way as i don't have the rice vinegar i used the apple vinegar...anyway it's deliscious

also i made a sauce similar to this the other day but with white sugar and normal malt vinigar would you say the brown sugar and rice vinigar give a better result?
@4ftofflame 1 cup = 240 ml, so 1/3 cup = 80 ml. I prefer brown sugar and rice vinegar to white sugar and malt vinegar, but it's just a matter of preference.

and the very first thing my father told me about cornstach was: you always always add lukewarm water to mix the cornstach to prevent lumps.
and the longer you cook the sauce with the cornstach, the thicker gets the sauce...
